PEOPLE WHO CARE ABOUT TALENT.

Who in San Antonio, South Texas, or Radio would you tip your hat to?

Who made you better?

Who helped you out when no one else would?

Who as a Talent do you respect-in the market today?

On a Positive Tip Today-Throwdown.

WOW...almost 100 hits on this post and not one person named someone who helped them in their career.

OUCH....

I think that says it all.

Todd Storz. I met him when visiting WQAM just before he died, and he took several hous to talk to a 17 year old who was going to do Top 40 for the first time in South America.

Bill Tanner. While managing WHTT in Miami, he was a mentor for me and my staff even though he had no responsibility for the "Spanish station down the hall." One of the best.

Cecil Heftel. Got me back into programming when I wanted to leave radio.

John Barger. A gruff felow, but a man who always spoke honestly. He and John Furr not only met with me last time I was out of work, but they bought the lunch too.

Ted Stecker. I applied at the Time Machine disco, but he brought me in at KITY instead.

Howard W. Davis. I went to see him one day to ask for career advice, and he hired me.

George Jennings. He respected my ability and put up with my s**t.

Hector Reyes. He brought me in to voice a promo, which led to my next job.

Woody Roberts. He was in the process of losing his job, but he still met with me and gave good advice.

Bob Rogers. He recognised my talent, and gave me work. Twice.

And there are dozens of former co-workers who respected and encouraged me: Bobby Reyes, T-Bone, Nick St John, Johnny Solo, Johnny Shannon, Don White, Don Couser, Ken Dow, Ken Noble, Tony Raven, Debbie Jecker, and many more.

Positive...yes, but that's the way it should ALWAYS BE! I was once told that I have an appeal that only caters to hispanics, 3 formats later I believe I CAN DO ANY FORMAT. I was once told that my voice sounds like Mickey mouse on CRACK...that person maybe right, but I have been blessed to work with AWESOME names in the industry as well as AWESOME people. What makes me wanna show up early to work just after I did a street hit out in the hot sun and play for 5 hours is the talent I am up against. Gives me GANAS...ya know! I like this subject...Thanks Throwdown...peace and taco grease...:)

Nice guys...

I have heard Tanner's Name highlighted before.

Old School Quote..."What Have You Done For Me Lately?"...(Janet-Ms Jackson if your nasty)

I did not see anyone from the last 5 years mentioned.

Can't see how John Barger helped anyone...He admits to single handedly promoting the idea to CC that jocks are a waste of time, money, and effort. But if he helped you at some point great that you remembered.

Hecter Reyes kept me going more than once...

Perhaps...we should take note of 3 things here...

1. Hardly any mentions still.
2. Most mentions are of people from the past.
3. Time for us to invert this...

Help others in the business...Plant seeds...competition on the air is fine, but no need to hate a radio brother or sister
cuz like it or not we have more in common than not.

The guru who trained me made me promise that I teach/pass on what he taught me to someone else or he would have left me to my own ignorance. He is dead. I have honored my promise more than once.

Be a guru...We all need help with a gig sooner or later...

God Bless and may it be way later...

GREAT POST THROWDOWN!

Don't really get to check this site very often, but this is a good POSITIVE topic. Since, I didn't start radio here a lot of the folks that got me rolling are in other markets or out of radio. There is a guy I would like to say inspires me...Jerry King.
He's been doing mornings on KKYX since the dawn of time and I have had the pleasure of seeing him every morning for about the last 8 years. Always upbeat. Always cracks the mic and sounds like he is having the best time in his life. Good jocks can pull that off most of the time, but not every single day. I also think Bruce Hathaway is a heck of talent that should be on the air somewhere. I wouldn't let him house sit for me or ask him to watch my beer, but he's extremely quick witted. When you get down to it, there really are quite a few jocks in this town that are doing a good solid job.

Kris Winston...

Nice to have you check in here. I recently commented that the only rock station I can recall that beat KISS hardcore was...KXZL 104.5 . I remember doing an amazing article for a high school paper with PD Dave C. Can you tell Kris anything more about KXZL? Were you there during or after that phase? I liked the mainstream approach this station had. I just can't list to KISS. I just don't feel Kiss in the morning. No offense I respect their history and all that.
Just not my cup of brew.

I did LOVE KXZL..listened mostly late afternoons and at night. I like rock but I like more variety. I hear Jack and they play a lot of rock cuts I like, but the wierd thing about them is I am not wanting them to be rock. I want them to play all the 80's and 90's cuts no one else touches...Not Classic Rock songs...

Anyways...I know you may have to stifle some of your answer for obvious reasons.

I can not reveal too much but I have passed you in the halls and never heard you say a negative thing about anyone.

God Bless

It's not always the people, sometimes it the cause. It will make you rise to a level that you may not have otherwise achieved.

I know most of the people that have been mentioned that "care about talent". I don't agree that they actually "care about talent". I think that they collectively care about the business of radio. And to the extent that they need the talent, they are willing to try to presuade talent that they actually have some.

Those that have talent, know it and develop it. They become successful because they want to become successful.

Throwdown....thanks for the kind words. Can't believe you never heard me say a negative thing about anyone. You need to spend more time around me. ;D No, KXZL was history by the time I got there. Heard a lot of good things about it and I know that the folks who listened really loved it. Not to say anything negative about KISS, cuz I work down the hall from 'em,(and Steve Hahn might win the lotto)..but there was a stretch of about 6 years that KZEP beat KISS 25-54. I'm sure KISS always won 18-34. I was just told to focus on the 25-54 demo so that's all I ever paid attention to. During that period of time there were a lot of really good people working at KZEP all working as a team. It was actually a lot of fun.
