Per AllAccess: Brian & Jen Exit Mornings At G-Rock

They're entertaining folk; good luck to them. In the meantime, any speculation as to what this portends? (This is, after all, a message board...)

My (completely uninformed) take: an "edgier" combo is on the way.

G Rock lineup one year ago...

Brian & Jen (Morning)
Gavin (Midday/PD)
Zanyor (PM Drive)
Matt Knight (Nights)
Dave Wetmore (Overnights)

G Rock lineup now...

TBD (Morning)
Terrie Carr (Midday/PD)
Matt Knight (Afternoon)
TBD (Nights)
Otto Mation (Overnight)

That's ALOT of turnover in one year, not to mention Brooke Connolly going from part timer to Midday to Nights to gone as well. As for mornings, it's hard to speculate. Press has been reluctant to go in an edgier direction before, and given the state of "edgy" radio right now, it might not be the best business move. Your guess is as good as mine.

Were they on this morning? I see that all references to them have already been removed from the website. And does this mean Brian Phillips is leaving the MD post as well? It'll certainly be interesting to see how this unfolds. I've never really cared for Brian & Jen as a morning show team, and I think bringing in something edgier (but not too polarizing) would be wise.

this is no suprise. the first thing i thought when i heard terrie carr had been named pd was, "goodbye jen". smart money is on a retread of the matt morning show that was on dha. i did, however, think that they'd keep brian on. curious. the whtg promotion director was let go today. talk about turnover. i'm not certain that these changes are over, or permanent. of course, i could be wrong.

I'm a little concerned that this means that G Rock is about to morph into a Southern-style Alternative (as in, lots of Hinder, Nickelback and more Mullet Rock). They're already playing tons of Puddle Of Mudd and Shinedown, and Terrie tried giving Buckcherry a few spins when she first started with the station. Hopefully these changes will be for the better. Brian & Jen were fun, but I felt their style better suited a Hot AC or CHR type format - they had a rapport similar to Mike & Diane, formerly of WBBO and now on WAYV. Good luck to both of them.

Rumor is that the new morning show is made of two people who have never met each other,

They are already running liners advertising the new show as "The morning G with Kramer"

So the show is one guy. He may have a sidekick or a cast of characters or something, but it doesn't sound like a two person show ala "Brian and Jen." It sounds like one guy either by himself or at least as the leader of the new show.

According to a blog entitled "The Next Chapter" on Matt Murray's myspace page, Murray has been given both the Music Director position and vacant night show, which will be called "Murray Til Midnight!". Seemingly, both positions begin on June 11th. Brian Phillips had been the G Rock's APD/MD in addition to AM drive duties.

Murray also comments on his blog that his former WDHA co-host Erin Voght will be a member of the new G Rock Morning show "that also begins on the 11th." Murray has been hosting AM drive since Brian & Jen's firing last week. Someone named "Kramer" will be G Rock's new morning man.

so much for Press being an EOE employer.....

Matt Murray? I don't know...he seems like kind of a "mullet rock" type. I guess SoulCrusher was really on to something when he predicted the station would go in that direction. Maybe we'll be in for a pleasant surprise, but I'm predicting a continuation of the very safe approach G-Rock has been taking with new music lately.

I think Matt Knight should have gotten the job if anything.

Good point. I know I saw the night job posted (which predictably went to a past colleague of Terrie Carr's) but, correct me if I'm wrong, I never saw the morning job posted anywhere.

With so many good jocks/personalities out there, you would think they would want to broaden their search, or at least attempt to comply with EOE rules.

Nothing to say, other than I'm quite surprised that Matt Knight did not get the MD role. He would have done a good job with it.

Just from listening to him the past few days... he couldn't seem further from a "mullet rock" type.

So how is this Kramer guy? From what I've read, he used to be the morning guy on Virginia Beach's Hot AC station, WCXL (Beach 104).

Musically, today has been more of the same for G-Rock, aside from two or three Gold tracks that I don't remember them playing in the regular rotation recently. I'll keep my fingers crossed for some new adds this week.

Kramer comes from North Carolina, not Virginia, and he is VERY good.

I agree mrslate... Having listened for the first week it is evident Kramer is gong to shake up Jersey morning radio. He just sounds "likeable". He and Erin have a chemistry too. Can't wait to hear how it develops over time. What a refreshing change! Gotta say too, that no matter what Soul Crusher says, the music is 100% better since Terrie Carr took over. This is one of the best Alternative Rock stations I've ever heard. Smart too... they seem to understand the fine line between mass appeal and being alternative.

"Likeable" is actually a pretty good description. I've been listening over the past week or 2 and I would agree that he comes off as a fun, easy going type guy. Not the "edgier" type show some have predicted, but still good.

G Rock Notes:

The Morning G is a good show. Fairly similar vibe to Brian & Jen. Hopefully Brian & Jen will wind up somewhere else - wouldn't be surprised at all to see a station like Radio 104.5 give them a shot.

Pete's Punkyard debuted last night at 10 PM. Even better than Friday Night Frenzy with the addition of all the classic punk acts thrown in the mix - it was good to hear the likes of Dead Kennedys and Minor Threat mixed in with the newer stuff. This was a much needed addition to the station.

A few new adds this past week: Silverchair (very MOR, not surprising at all for G Rock), Mutemath (glad to see them spinning a good newer act fairly quickly) and Marilyn Manson (they should have been on this 6 weeks ago). I hope we see a good deal more, as there are a lot of tired songs that continue to see very heavy airplay. WJSE is on the new singles by The Fratellis, The Shins, and The Killers, while G Rock is still wearing out the same old songs and have been for months now. Come on guys - get your head in the game!

Finally, The Drop. This really should be a segment that airs every weeknight, much like the Late Night Leak on WJSE. If they insist on being so cautious in the new music department, they should at least have this run more than once a week. I don't think anyone will be disappointed if we hear the overplayed Linkin Park, Green Day, Pearl Jam, etc. just a little bit less in order to run this feature five times a week.
