Per BPatrick: Brushes (or brush-offs?) with greatness

BPatrick brought up the possibility in this thread

of whether any one of us has met anyone famous and how the meeting went. IIRR, this topic has probably had a round or 2 here since RI has been online. Also, IIRR, the mod-folks may have had to step in at some point (?) before, so hopefully this go-round can be civil....

Charlotte Rae (Facts of Life, Diff. Strokes)- she'd lent her voice to a children's book-on-tape back in the early 1990s and appeared for a book-signing at a bookstore where I was working at the time; she was very nice, and complimented my voice for some reason :)

Kristian Alfonso (Hope, Days of Our Lives) and Peter Reckell (Bo, Days) - appeared at a health fair put on by the local NBC station; they were as nice as they could be, considering the mad rush of people going by them for what seemed like 2 hours.

Rene Syler (ex-The Early Show) and Peter Bergman (Jack, Young and the Restless) - during the TX State Fair, and before Rene had jumped to The Early Show, she'd just started a new anchoring job at KTVT/11 in Fort Worth after having been away from local TV there for a while. She was quite nice, while Bergman might have been tired (or had too many whiffs of the livestock barn :D )... he wasn't rude, though, and thought it was sweet that my mother was a fan of the show.

Linda Dano (ex-Felicia, Another World) - an amazing woman. She is as nice or nicer than anything you will see her do on TV. No snobby diva act. Classy, friendly, and genuine. (Wow, guess I'd better stop with the adjectives :) ). No matter how rushed she might be at an appearance, she makes time for everyone present. Linda is probably the person I'd most like to be friends with, of all the personalities I've met.
(I've met other AW actors, including Stephen Schnetzer (ex-Cass), Laurence Lau (ex-Jamie), Judi Evans (ex-Paulina), Anna Stuart (ex-Donna), Mark Pinter (ex-Grant), Gail Brown (ex-Clarice; Brown is Karen Black (the actress)'s sister), Les Brandt (ex-Rafael), and David Andrew Macdonald (ex-Jordan/David) ... I've been in somewhat regular MySpace message contact with Brandt, as well as Clayton Prince (Reuben); a while back, I traded several emails with Thom Racina (ex-AW headwriter, 1986-1988) as well ... all were quite nice and outgoing, most of the actors are still acting, with Schnetzer doing bit parts and some ads (Aleve, UBS), Dano is still acting but limits herself and has given up being on soaps (sadly) since the deaths of her husband and mother a while back, Brown is mainly a housewife now, Racina has been a writer for many years with several books to his credit, Evans is back on Days (her previous role before taking on the part of Paulina), and Lau and Pinter have recently landed new soap work)

Joan Rivers - she used to have a radio show on WOR in NYC, and I tried calling one day after having heard her show online, and surprisingly got through. I asked her why she hadn't put out a new comedy album. "Because I wouldn't PUT OUT!!!!" OMG, did I walk into that one! Rivers had done a bit part on AW in it's last years, and I asked her about that also. She was realistic about the show being cancelled but really liked having had the opportunity to play on the show.

Paige Davis (Trading Spaces) - she passed through the line one day at a drugstore where I was a cashier. I told her I hadn't seen the show before, and she was quite anxious for me to see it.

Lou Diamond Phillips - he and his then-girlfriend, as well as a producer/director/writer, and an actress, were all staying at a hotel where I once worked. They were filming a movie nearby that was originally named 'Bloodlines' but by the time the project was done and listed on IMDb, the title became 'Striking Range'. I only got to see him as he passed through the lobby once; they had him in almost every scene so he was probably the busiest person on the project. I think the movie didn't even make it to theaters, just DVD.

Pat Summerall - was at a booksigning with a local Dallas-area sportstalk radio host who'd done a book a while back about the Dallas Cowboys during the mid-1990s. He was friendly, but seemed possibly tired, which might be understandable considering his recent health problems. I told him how much I'd heard his name throughout my life as my mother was a big Cowboys fan; he was very appreciative and also expressed his condolences about her passing. It was actually quite an experience to meet him...other than seeing someone in person who my mother admired (and was fond of), there was quite a bit I noticed in him that reminded me of my father, especially in his last years. I wasn't expecting that effect at all.

I dont remember similar threads to this topic being a problem on this site however on some other sites it has been a different story. On some sites such as Sitcomsonline and Roadfood, say you met a celebrity, gotta prove it ( You Tube clip, airchecks, pics, My Space, links..whatever ) otherwise they think you are lying which could mean one thing... BANNED. "TJ" who runs Sitcomsonline for some reason has this hatred towards..as he puts it "Hollywood gossip". A good friend of mine got banned from Sitcomsonline because she had mentioned meeting Marla Gibbs ( 227 & The Jeffersons ) in Washington DC a few years back. However the site DEMANDED a You Tube clip to be placed in her post or otherwise according to the email she received "..you my friend are a LIAR". She didn't and got banned. Don't people know that even had she made a You Tube clip of her meeting with Marla, Marla Gibbs could have had that clip removed? Like that family in Virginia whose 13 year old daughter had a run-in with Wayne Newton and his bodyguards last year. I remember the You Tube clip which was filmed by a third party as this incident was taking place...It wasn't pretty and despite being a "homemade" clip, Wayne Newton still managed to get the clip removed anyway. Sometimes one just can't win.

Anyway...back on topic...

I met Ron Jeremy ( yeah the porn actor ) back in 2004 when he was at my radio station. Ron was actually a nice guy but lets just say he was not the smartest person in the world considering some of the stuff he was saying to us. I will leave it at that.

In 1986 I met Jim & Tammy Faye Bakker ( almost exactly one year before all hell broke loose ). For some reason a group of us were curious enough to visit Heritage USA and there they were..in the shopping arcade ( just about everything in that mall was not exactly cheap ). But the Bakkers were very nice people..and short. I am only 5/9 and both Jim and Tammy Faye..it seemed I was giant compared to them. Oh for the record I was wearing jam shorts and an AC/DC shirt...and the Bakkers could not have cared less. In other words they treated me the same as anyone else..they didn't judge. I give them points for that.

Before I say anything about whom I have met, for the purposes of this thread, do they have to be national celebrities, or can they be local?

When bpatrick brought it up originally, it sounded like he meant 'nationally known' but I guess it's no biggie to give local props. I've met a few locals too, mostly news anchors/reporters and some sports notables past/present.

Ok, First nationally..
My wife is a HUGE Young and the Restless. fan.Joshua Morrow (Nick Newman) Made an appearance at a CVS Pharmacy Grand Opening near where we lived in Canton, Ohio.(we still live in Canton, only in a different part of town) He seemed very friendly and accomodating..A nice young man..

Locally:
I got to meet, in person at Ghoulardifest in October, Chuck Schodowski (Big Chuck) Bob (Hoolihan the Weatherman) Wells and (Lil John) Rinaldi formerly of WJW-TV 8 in Cleveland. All three are the most down to earth, nicest celebrities you'll ever want to meet..Big Chuck was also at a book signing last week for his recent autobigraphy at Borders in North Canton, Ohio..He was scheduled to be there from 7-8 PM..The lines were so long he stayed till 9.Though he was tired at the end, he accomodated every fan with an autograph or picture.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYj847J4ms0

Short interview with Chuck at Borders, along with getting an idea of what it was like there..

Also, since I've done my Cleveland Classic Media Blog, several Former famous Cleveland Broadcasters, including Jay Lawrence, (Formerly KYW Radio-1100, Now in Phoenix),Harry Martin (KYW/1100-Also worked in San Diego and New York Radio) Joe Mosbrook (Retired WKYC) and Johnny Holliday (WHK, WEWS-TV-Has been Univ. of Maryland Basketball voice) have checked it out..Theyve all been nothing but nice about it..

One more:Country Music Hall of FamerJimmy Fortune,..Though he was most famous as part of the Statler Brothers (Tenor) He has been doing a solo act since 2002.I've been to 2 concerts of his, never seen him with a cross word to any fan..and will stay till the last autograph is signed..

I originally intended this to mean national personalities,
but I'll include local, since I've met John Pruitt of WSB/2
Atlanta, and worked with WGHP/8 High Point, NC's former
anchor, Fred Blackman (now retired). Both are as nice a
guys as you'd ever want to meet. My dad and I also once
met WFMY's now-deceased sports anchor, Charlie Harville,
who said it was good to see some of his "fans." My dad
nearly choked on that one.

My dad has had more luck than I have at meeting national
figures. He got Harry Reasoner's autograph for me, but I
seem to recall him saying that Reasoner was already three
sheets to the wind...and that was at lunchtime! He also
brought back an autograph from wrestler Dusty "The American
Dream" Rhodes.

I also would like to know if you've ever e-mailed somebody
famous, and what sort of response you got. As I've said about
half a dozen times, there was a world of difference between
the responses I got from Jada Rowland and Dan Region.

I don't remember any threads on this topic, but that doesn't
mean there haven't been. I think as long as you give your honest
impressions of the person, without resorting to name-calling, the
moderator(s) won't step in.

That's "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes...if you wiiiiiiiiiiil! ;D

Locally ... way after the fact:

In 2005, I met Birmingham 'kiddie' TV personality Cliff "Cousin Cliff" Holman. At the time, Alzheimers had already entered the room (he died earlier this year). A more gracious, genuine and more decent man I'd be hard-pressed to find.

And around the same time I had the immense pleasure of meeting both Birmingham "weather girls" - Pat Gray from Channel 6, and Rosemary (Lucas) from Channel 13. To me, all three may as well have been national celebrities.

Nationally ... very recently:

My wife had an entry in the National Gingerbread Competition in Asheville, N.C. last month (she didn't place), and as we were browsing the other entries in the room, I noticed my wife staring toward someone. She was taking pictures of my wife's entry, and it turned out to be Melissa Reeves, formerly of Days Of Our Lives -- both Amy and her mother have been big DOOL fans; my MIL has followed it since day one. Ms. Reeves was a very nice, pleasant and down-to-earth woman.
