Perry Broadcasting Launches Urban In Fayetteville, AR

Keep in mind that the average urban station's audience is between 40 and 60% white. So, it's not like the station will only appeal to blacks.

Still, even with those statistics and the college town vibe, it seems like an odd format choice for Fayetteville. The launch of an urban station was expected with 1340 and 105.3 being sold to Perry, though I can't figure out why he wanted to invest in those properties.

In a market such as Fayetteville, I thought Perry would sign on a Rhythmic CHR before doing an Urban which the company is accustom to doing. I hope it works for them.

I have always felt an Urban / Urban AC hybrid would work well in this market. More Urban AC mornings and mid-day, working through Rhythmic CHR in PM drive and into a more Urban format at night.

No chance urban AC would work. Urban AC has almost no white appeal, and the black female population (which is 80% of the audience of the average urban AC) of the market is about 1.6%.

Rhythmic CHR and urban stand a much better chance, but it's still a pretty small niche. Plus, you have to get advertisers on board. I'm not sure that's possible.

I would think that rhythmic CHR would make more sense than Urban. The 105.3 transmitter is close to Springdale, which is about 50% hispanic. Rhythmic CHR is the format of choice among many young hispanics and would also get some share on white listeners who listen to Hot Mix or Power than an urban station. I doubt a straight up Urban format will last and wouldn't be surprised to some shift to a Rhythmic CHR format in the near future.

Speaking of Urban AC, I noticed that KDIV-LP has sprung up at 98.7 with its transmitter broadcasting from the south side of Fayetteville.
