"Perry Mason" not being aired on WCVB 5.2, compared to other MeTV affilates.

"Perry Mason" not being aired on WCVB 5.2, compared to other MeTV affilates.

On the WCVB 5.2 (MeTV) schedule, I noticed that "Perry Mason" was pre-empted for "The Mod Squad" at 10:00 AM and again with "Mission: Impossible" at 11:30 PM. Does some other Boston market TV station have the local rights for "Perry Mason" or is it just a decision to change the local MeTV Boston schedule somewhat? Just curious. Mind you, I love "Mod Squad" and "Mission: Impossible" but I was hoping to watch "Perry Mason". Any thoughts?

The last time "Perry Mason" was run in the market was almost a decade ago when channel 50 was WNDS. It aired at 8pm at that time! That ended when they became WZMY and tried a live program in that slot.

And to think the only thing that remained the same on the schedule when WHDH-TV-5 became WCVB 40 years ago, Perry Mason continued to be aired at 5 on 5.

"Perry Mason" must have been very popular in syndication. I've noticed in various TV listings for the late 60s that several stations aired it at 5p.

Re: "Perry Mason" not being aired on WCVB 5.2, compared to other MeTV affilates.

I brought up a similar subject in the Classic TV thread recently, as there was a big stink about Perry Mason moving from its longtime 12 noon slot on Portland, Oregon's Fox affiliate, KPTV, where it's aired in that hour every weekday since the mid-60s, to its sister station, MyTV affiliate KPDX, where it currently airs at 8am local time. Similar to the Boston Me-TV situation, Perry Mason is too covered-up by The Mod Squad and Mission: Impossible in the Rose City, on their Me-TV affiliate (KATU-DT2).

Re: "Perry Mason" not being aired on WCVB 5.2, compared to other MeTV affilates.

It would seem plausible that stations might preempt certain Me-TV programs that another station in the same market has rights to, but the situation doesn't apply everywhere (especially since some stations preempt Me-TV programs regardless of whether a station has rights to a program shown on the network or not, like with WZME and KTXD, or just to air additional newscasts like with WLKY and WBAL). Just yesterday, KOCO in Oklahoma City flipped its 5.2 subchannel to Me-TV and they do not preempt M*A*S*H's airings at 6 and 6:30 p.m., despite KAUT having had rights to the show since it was a Viacom-owned UPN affiliate.

In the case of Me-TV's sister network This TV, stations that preempt some of its programs don't do so because the show's rights are held locally elsewhere, since the classic shows that This airs aren't syndicated elsewhere (it is possible to see a film on the network one day and see it on another station later that week though). KSBI, also in the Oklahoma City market, preempts several classic TV shows that This TV airs on the station's 52.2 subchannel (namely Sea Hunt, Highway Patrol, Patty Duke, Mister Ed, one Saturday airing of The Outer Limits and one Sunday airing of Bat Masterson, none of which are carried on any other station in the market) for The Shepherd's Chapel, an outdoor program and a health show broadcast from FamilyNet, all of which air on the station's main channel, making it a rather superfluous series of preemptions. Preemptions of This TV programs would make sense if the subchannel shared affiliation with another network like MyNetworkTV or The CW, but that's not the case for KSBI (The CW is on another station and MyNet is carried on KSBI's main channel).

Re: "Perry Mason" not being aired on WCVB 5.2, compared to other MeTV affilates.

Although not airing in the market, someone could still have unused runs of PERRY MASON.

Or they just didn't want B&W Shows airing in mid-morning.

I remember that WHDH still had the syndication rights to Perry even after Ansin bought it; perhaps that is still the case?

Perry aired at 10am on WMFP and probably would have aired at night also but we got infomercials after 10pm

Re: "Perry Mason" not being aired on WCVB 5.2, compared to other MeTV affilates.

Apparently, another station in the market exercised their rights to have "Perry Mason" pre-empted on MeTV Boston (WCVB 5.2). Thus the substitution of the two daily showings "Perry Mason" for "The Mod Squad" and "Mission: Impossible" was a result of another station owning the local rights to the show. Which is rather interesting considering that WMFP (62.1) carried the show during the weekdays when they were running MeTV. Out of curiosity, who still retains the local rights to "Perry Mason" in this market?

Re: "Perry Mason" not being aired on WCVB 5.2, compared to other MeTV affilates.

WHDH was the last station to air "Perry Mason" in Boston proper. WBIN was the last to air it in the entire market (as WNDS?), but as we all know, the southern NH stations duplicate syndicated programming seen on the stations in the Boston proper part of the market. So, I doubt it would have been WBIN.

If it is WHDH, and they're going to do that after not airing it since around 1998 or 1999 (maybe 2000?), they should at least air it themselves! They could air it on WLVI in the early mornings. Although personally, I was really looking forward to being able to watch it at 11:30 pm, before bedtime. Bummer!
