Personalities on Jack Stations

I don't get why Jack stations are jockless. Our Jack clone The Peak has personalties all day and night. I do think it helps drive your station. When you have personalities that can relate to the listener, banter back and forth with them. I think it makes for a more FUN presentation on the air. I mean if the listener wanted to hear their favorite songs they could just get an IPOD. They turn on the radio to hear something they cant get from a jukebox. So why no personalities on the Jack stations

Agree completely

Jack could really kick butt with GOOD energetic jocks on the air. Not voice tracked, live, local and really rocking with the music. I would program it the way CHR stations sounded in the 80's. Lotsa phone calls, requests, top of hour ID's that the jocks talk up, weather bed "donuts" over which the weather is read, lots of contests. It would be a great listen!

I don't get why they are going this "we hate people (both jocks and you the listener....screw you their sweepers almost seem to say)" route.

Re: Agree completely

I also would add the station voice of The Peak in Phoenix has his own personality going. His name Mr Peakerhead and is basially the guy in charge of "picking" the music. The spots with him and the staff going through the music selection are hillarious. I really do think The Peak is doing something better than the hundred other Jack stations. Plus at night its not Whatever we want its a show called Whatever YOU Want. Also the aircheck I heard of the Mike station in Boston had jocks. Makes for a better radio station!

Really, most brand-new radio stations are jockless at launch. And because of that, there's this huge conspiracy theory that Jack is some attempt to eliminate (thus, not pay) jocks anymore.

A) I think that is paranoid thinking--it'w way to early to tell.

B) I also agree that personalities in some form or another will eventually be
added to Jack-type stations. And, wouldn't it be really cool if it's not
necessarily done the conventional way with the typical 2005 era DJs. It may
be a deal where they have jocks in AM and PM Drive-- it may make sense to have
the sound of a ton o' music w/o interruptions in middays and evenings.

Re: Agree completely

The "attitude" voice jock that some of them use
really gets annoying.

Re: Agree completely

radioray,

You are talking about the Variety Hits format that I created about five years ago. I guess Jack and I were working on the same idea at the same time. My format is called Pop Radio and it is everything you talk about in your post about the personalities and style of radio. I am shopping it around right now, so if you know of any stations interested? :)

Not all JACK-FM, or Variety Hits stations in general, are jockless. KFMB-FM in San Diego, which is a JACK-FM station, retained its morning drive show. WBUF in Buffalo, another JACK-FM station, has Howard Stern syndicated in morning drive (albeit only because of contractual requirements).

The iPod comparisons irk me in that an iPod is a very personalized experience. Variety Hits is a format programmed to appeal to a broad base of people with hit songs that don't receive a great deal of airplay relative to their recognition/appeal. The only real similarities I see are the variety of music both can have and the way that chatter is non-present with both.

As for personalities, some stations are getting on board with it. Canada is filled with VH stations that have personalities (though Canada, sadly, gets ignored all the time, from a "how long will this format last?" POV to the personality issue). But, for example, in Champaign/Urbana, IL, just this week their VH station, 92.5 The Chief, announced that they'd have live jocks from 5 AM-8 PM. So it's being implemented slowly but surely in some places...
______________

One of the rules of Jack FMs is to be jockless for at least the first few months. Since the Peak is not Jack FM, they can do what they please. I don't Jack FMs will be permenantly jockless, but it may take some time for it to happen.
______________

created what

Peter- if you created this, why have you been keeping it such a good secret?

Re: variety hits format

I have been promoting it for the last two to three years. Mostly through mailings to radio stations, syndication companies, radio networks and the website.

The timing wasn't right, though. I was trying to sell it before Jack's popularity. No one would listen then. Now they are. And you know how people are in this busines, it's hard to get a moment of their time.

Pop Radio has received favorable reviews from some big name people in radio.

When you say "if you created this..." what do you mean? I did create (or develop) the idea of the Pop Radio format.

The original U.S. Jack in Denver seems to have live jocks, but they're basically doing backsells into stop sets, more like old-line AOR radio.

variety hits

Just asking because among me and many, many fellow PDs, none of us had even heard of your show (then or now).

Don't you get it? It's all about doing things CHEAPER and CHEAPER and CHEAPER!!!!!!
They'll just keep doing things even cheaper!!!!

As for the Canadian side, shortly after launching Jack Toronto at 92.5FM, they had morning, mid day and afternoon Jocks, along with some week end Jocks.

All the jocks recently hired, were shown the door, except for the morning show.
They did hire a new afternoon drive guy, but the station is jockless outside of morning and afternoon drive now, and aparantly this is a permanent decision.

As for Buffalo NY, that computer in the closet is going to stay there, at least until the station is sold.

not again!

Hey, Yez- we know you hate it that they don't SAY "we'll take your requests"
and that you totally don't get the "we play what we want" line (you're the only one at this point). So please, calm down and cool off. We get it.

You mean it's NOT for the purpose of doing things cheaper and cheaper and cheaper?

I wouldn't mind hearing a song from three hours in, sooner, and I'm not the only one, just the only one with time to complain (by some miracle)
I suggest you respect the fact that I'm refering to the exsisting play list, not intending to add a song request that's not already there.
For that, one would be wise to call the music department of a station to get the best answer.
Requesting to hear a song that Jack doesn't play doesn't hurt, but at least apon learning they don't play it, I'm not the type to bug and bug the dj to look for it. Sorry to hear you're not professional enough to deal with those who do...the easy way out won't work for ever.

Again, I said IT HELPS to take requests, I never once said it drives a station.
Your level of intelligence failed to understand that.
Calling me a dork is also not intelligent.

Re: Agree completely/Rude Voiceovers

I've been listening to "JACK Online" from Dallas. I agree the attitude of the voiceover gets really annoying and rude. There's one liner where he is pretending to answer the phone. A caller says "I'd like to make a request" and then he abruptly says they don't take requests and then sighs and says..."so much work to do!" There is also a "we play what we want...GET USED TO IT!"

I've also been listening to BOB-FM (KBPA 103.5) from Austin when I'm in that direction. It's the exact same voiceover guy, but he has a much friendlier approach on that station. I think they take requests indirectly online, by the way. Anyway, he says Bob plays what he wants, but it just has a friendlier sound to it. Also, they tell little quick stories about BOB sometimes. The station seems to only have jocks in the morning and afternoon drive times. I think by personifying BOB and making it a seemingly friendlier station, it's a little more listenable then JACK Dallas.

Hopefully Austin's BOB will continue to add live personalities (I don't know if they will), but given the choice, I really prefer the liners in Austin over those in Dallas.

Re: not again!

Maybe you could explain to us how, in your opinion, playing requests will make a station perform better. I'm pretty sure that's what we're failing to understand. I would argue til my last breath that playing requests will never have any real positive effect on a station. Clearly, you disagree. But why do you disagree?

Could it be that things are coming full circle? The old WBEN-FM was totally automated well into the 80s and was quite successful.

Realistically, stations haven't actually played requests in decades, but add me to the list of those who don't get the "we play what we want" line either.
