Personality Driven vs. Format Driven

On a discussion on one of the other boards, one the posters thinks that if an air personality from Station A leaves the station and goes to Station B in the same market, that they take their listeners with them. I, on the other hand, don't think that holds true anymore. I feel radio today is more format driven than personality driven. I think there are only a few air personalities left in Nashville today, that are not on talk or All Sports radio, that have that kind of listener loyality, namely Gerry House, Coyote McCloud and possibly Woody & Jim from the River. I can't see Rick Marino and Anna Marie Ritter leaving Mix 92.9 for another station in Nashville and their listeners following them there. And I don't see anyone quit listening to 95.5 the Wolf because Denis Prior( or any other of their bland, faceless jocks) left for another Nashville station. Do you think radio is more format driven than personality driven these days?

Denis Prior has doubled his ratings TWICE since the birth of The Wolf a year ago. He's very funny and understands brevity--something many other jocks could learn--including Gerry House. Denis has many loyal fans and would take a lot of them with him should he move to another frequency. Hopefully that will not happen.

It's time The Wolf is given the respect we deserve for creating the most powerful ratings turnaround in country radio in America in the last year!

That has always been the case with programmers who don't do the ordinary. You will remember that when WHN was the most listened to Country station in the 70s, many in the industry dismissed it because we didn't play the same records as everyone else. WHN air personalties had much larger audiences than others who won industry awards, but were often slighted because they didn't talk as much as those other guys. There always has been a disconnect between the conventional wisdom of the industry and what the audience really wants (but you know that).

No Chris I think this is from Denis' mom.

You're right Ed. I just get tired of seeing all the negativity on this board sometimes.

Mr. Sebastian, It is funny you take a shot at a guy like Gerry House...

He's very funny and understands
brevity--something many other jocks could
learn--including Gerry House.

and then complain about negativity on the board...

You seem to be as arrogant as people make you out to be...

Take shots at Sebastian all you want, but he took a station from the outhouse to the penthouse. Boring as it may sound to us, the listeners obviously like it, and the guy has a right to be arrogant if he wants to be. He did what three previous PDs at 95.5 didn't do, pass KDF and challenge SIX. <P ID="signature">______________

Is there any truth to the rumor going around that Steve Gill's producer/
girl friday Scottie is getting her own show?

I was not taking shots at his performance as it is very impressive, but I thought it ironic that someone who says he wants to show positives and not talk to many negatives, then takes a negative shot at someone... This is not the first time I have read something where he has done this.

My only point...

I'm sure the people at Cumulus are getting a HUGE laugh out of that question...

Replying to my own reply in the unlikely event my HIgh School English teacher is reading the board: What I meant to say was "The only person spreading that rumor is *she.*

I have it on confidence there is no truth to that rumor. Scottie is getting married this spring and has other plans on her mind.
