Pet Peeve

I heard this one in Little Rock last week..."Accidents are working...."

I tried to picture that in my head but couldn't decide if those were blue collar or white collar accidents. What's the difference? Well, I suspect the blue collar accidents work more and are underpaid and under-appreciated.
 
I see your point. And raise this one. It's not just police "working" a crash. It's fire, ambulance, wrecker and, in the case of 18 wheelers, state motor carrier or public safety people too. If it's a fatal it's a crime scene and here come more people! It's also just an extra verb to employ when you get tired of the others. Gotta' keep the act fresh!

I see your point and raise one. "Officials" or "Emergency officials" can save you some good reporting time so you can move on to the next incident and not yak the listeners' ears off.
One thing about this market is there are so many who will leave the scene before Police even arrive since they don't want any.......'issues' or they don't have insurance.

Sometimes even that one car wreck at Poplar and Yates is responsible for the entire east leg of I-240 backup.

Melody had a good one on Wednesday morning.

She advised motorists to add "13 to 14 minutes" to the morning commute because of the rain-slick streets.

How did she compute that nonsense?

What if my commute is 20 minutes? How about 50 minutes?

Do I add 13 or 14 minutes in either case?

99% of traffic reports are worthless.

I hear them all the time warning of massive backups at a particular location on 385 or 240, precisely as I am passing the "troubled" area with no problem at all.

Another favorite is "there's a car stalled at Poplar and Highland." Well, is the car on Poplar or Highland? Is it heading north, south, east or west? If you can't tell me, then I'll take the 75% chance that it will not impact me.

And stop telling speeders where the radar is. That's no different that telling shoplifters where the surveillance cameras are pointed at Target.

You traffic folks may as well read me today's horoscope. The accuracy is about the same.

Being former radio and now law enforcement I can see both sides about stations telling drivers where the po-po are, but I don’t see a problem with it.

There was a court case many years ago in another state about TV and radio stations informing on where traffic enforcement was set up. The stations won. I can’t remember all the facts but if I remember correctly the courts held it was actually promoting driver safety since it supposedly would make the drivers slow down.

Besides, at the end of the day, is not the goal (for everyone) to slow traffic down in a particular area so as to make that area more safe?
Who cares if people slow down because some traffic reporter told them where the cop was, or because they SAW the cop, or because they got a ticket there last Thursday?
The point is ...THEY SLOW DOWN!

I don't think there are many that would actually alter their route to avoid a particular area, just so they could drive a little faster. They'll just slow down, for at least as long as they're near the radar, and then resume what they were doing anyway. ::)
 
Which is why we sometimes put another car a mile down the road...

Seriously, depending on the road it's sometmies dangerous and causes a bottleneck to stop someone during rush hour. So I will sit in full view with the radar on...drinking a cup of coffee and catching up on the news. Slows 'em down anyway.

But for some reason Mel and her associates usually don't seem to know where we are out in the county !
