MY FORMER AGENT, AS WELL AS ME PERSONALLY, TRIED FOR A VERY LONG TIME OVER THE LAST YEAR TO GET SOME KIND OF RESPONSE FROM MIKE THOMAS, WHO IS THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR OVER AT 98.5…INITIALLY ALL HE WOULD SAY IS “PETE HAS TOO MUCH OF A WEEI PRESENCE AND WE ARE BUILDING OUR OWN BRAND HERE”…OKAY, WELL, WE ALL KNOW THAT’S A BIG CROCK OF CRAP..FIRST OF ALL, MR. THOMAS, DOES NOT HAVE A SPORTS RADIO BACKGROUND AS SOME OF YOU KNOW…HE COMES FROM A MUSIC BACKGROUND…SECOND, A VAST MAJORITY OF THOSE WHO WORK OVER AT 98.5 HAS BEEN ON W-E-E-I AT SOME POINT..SO FOR MIKE THOMAS TO SAY ANYTHING ABOUT NOT HAVING A W-E-E-I PRESENCE IS CRAZY…HE MUST THINK EVERYONE IS STUPID….NOW GET THIS, IT WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION LAST WEEK BY A FRIEND OF MINE…ABOUT A MONTH AGO, THIS SAME FRIEND CAME TO ME AND SAID HE WANTED TO SPEND SOME MONEY ON “A SPORTS RADIO STATION” AND ASKED ME WHAT I THOUGHT…HE WANTED TO HAVE ME VOICE HIS COMMERCIALS…I SAID WELL, FORGET ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED TO ME A YEAR AGO AT W-E-E-I, IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT I AM ABOUT TO TELL YOU..HE SAID FINE…I SAID TO HIM, “RIGHT NOW, BOTH STATIONS ARE ABOUT IN A DEAD-HEAT RATINGS WISE, HOWEVER FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND, YOU CAN PROBABLY GET A BETTER RATE OVER AT 98.5 FOR MORNINGS AND AFTERNOONS..” WHICH IS WHERE HE WANTED TO SPEND HIS MONEY…WELL, HE SAID OKAY..HE MEETS WITH ONE OF THE SALES PEOPLE FROM THE SPORTS HUB, THOUGHT MAYBE HE WAS CLOSE TO A DEAL, TOLD THE SALES GUY HE WANTED ME TO VOICE THE COMMERCIALS….LIKE I SAID, LAST WEEK MY FRIEND COMES UP TO ME AND SAYS, “WELL, I JUST GOT A CALL BACK FROM THE SALES GUY AT 98.5, HE SAYS THEY WILL PRODUCE THE COMMERCIALS BUT THAT THE PD, MIKE THOMAS, SAID THAT PETE SHEPPARD IS NOT ALLOWED TO VOICE THE COMMERCIALS”….NEEDLESS TO SAY, MY FRIEND WON’T BE DOING BUSINESS THERE….OKAY A COUPLE THINGS HERE…ONE, I AM NOW LOOKING INTO POSSIBLE LEGAL RAMIFICATIONS OF THIS ACTION IF THEY ARE INDEED TRUE..DID THEIR GENERAL MANAGER KNOW THAT THIS WAS GOING ON AT THE TIME(BY THE WAY, CALLED HIM ALSO, NO RETURN CALL ABOUT THE SITUATION)..ALSO, I HAVE TO WONDER HOW MANY OTHER CLIENTS ON THAT STATION HAVE BEEN TOLD IN THE PAST WHO CAN AND CAN NOT VOICE THEIR COMMERCIALS..I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING IN THIS BUSINESS..IT IS TOTALLY UNPROFESSIONAL…ALSO, THIS DAY AND AGE WITH THE ECONOMY, I DON’T KNOW OF ANY RADIO STATION THAT WOULD TURN DOWN MONEY JUST BECAUSE OF WHO VOICES THEIR SPOTS…I WAS TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY BY THIS BUT IT DOES CLEAR UP ONE THING..THIS GUY MIKE THOMAS, WHO I HAVE NEVER MET BY THE WAY, HAS GONE OUT OF HIS WAY FOR SOME REASON IN KEEPING ME OFF 98.5…OKAY, HE’S THE PD, THAT’S HIS RIGHT, BUT TO NOT LET ME VOICE COMMERICALS FOR A POTENTIAL CLIENT, SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG WITH THAT..ALL I EVER WANTED WAS TO MEET THE GUY IN PERSON…FOR SOME REASON, HE DOESN’T THINK I WOULD HAVE BROUGHT LISTENERS AND RATINGS OVER TO HIS STATION..I AM PRETTY SURE, THANKS TO SO MANY OF YOU, THAT I WOULD HAVE..SOME MIGHT THINK I AM MAKING A BIG DEAL OUT OF THIS BUT I HAVE TO TELL YOU, HAVING SPOKEN TO OTHERS IN THE BUSINESS ABOUT THE SITUATION, THEY ARE QUITE FRANKLY AS STUNNED AS ME AND DON’T UNDERSTAND IT….I WOULD RATHER HAVE THE GUY TELL ME TO FACE TO GO SCREW AND GET OUT OF HIS OFFICE THEN TO NOT EVEN HAVE THE DECENCY TO HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH ME..WELL, THAT’S WHERE I AM REGARDING 98.5 THE SPORTS HUB…I DON’T GET IT, MOST OF THE ON AIR PEOPLE ON THAT STATION DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY I AM GETTING TREATED LIKE THIS..MAYBE WE WILL FIND OUT SOON, I AM NOT SO SURE…IF MANAGEMENT OVER THERE DENIES MY SIDE OF THE STORY, THEY ARE LYING…I AM JUST CURIOUS IF THE GM KNEW WHAT THE PD WAS DOING, BUT LIKE I SAID, CAN’T GET AN ANSWER…

REGARDING WHAT HAPPENED AT WEEI LAST WEEK WITH THE CHANGES AT WEEI..FOLKS, IT IS NO DIFFERENT THEN WHAT HAPPENED TO ME…IT WAS ALL BUSINESS, NOT PERSONAL..I KNOW MANY OF YOU HAVE DIFFERENT THEORIES ABOUT THIS OR THAT BUT IT SIMPLY COMES DOWN... Which means text on the different personalities, which I have read. He implied that I just looked at the pictures. The book is part of the Images Of America series. Primarily pictures but a lot of text, too. Scott Fybush said: "It's a photo-heavy collection from the folks at Arcadia Publishing...And while some of the Arcadia volumes tend to have little heft beyond the pretty pictures, this one promises to be a little different - after all, nobody knows the early history of Boston radio the way Donna does." It does have a lot of text on each picture, given that it's an "images" book, plus chapters at the start. I should have phrased it as "it has many pictures of, and information about, prominent figures in Boston radio history". In retrospect, I should have worded it this way. A lot of research went into it btw and I was delighted by some of the finds!

Sheppard at some point has to simply have to face the truth. As the late great Butch from the Cape deemed him, 'you're a glorified flash boy'. Granted it isn't that he's not qualified, i.e. loud, opinionated, pompous, YES. But talent and marketability, NOT. Sorry, ain't nobody gonna pay, $ponsor for a loose-cannon, can't conduct an interview, lower-middle of the road talent - and I'm being REALLY generous. There are plenty of everymen out there. Entercom was really generous to him. To say the powers that be over at CBS overlook HIS talent. Look in the mirror dude. Please.

The one identifiable trademark of WEEI I will grant is loud-mouth Sheppard on the air with Ordway. But, if you're WBZ-FM and you're trying to distinguish yourself from EEI' you don't hire a person who's easily identifiable with your competitor. Sorry Sheppard, time to look in Providence or Hartford, where you may still have some cache.
