Peter Shamin--Peter Shane RIP

I haven't seen this posted anywhere yet. Peter Shamin a/k/a Peter Shain passed away the other day, after complications from a stroke over the weekend.

Some of you may remember Peter from WNNNBC, and his fill-ins on The Time Machine occassionally. I don't know ALL of his history in NY radio (perhaps someone can chime in here) but I know he also was a board-op for the Joey Reynolds Show for a while over at WOR. He ran a very good board.

Peter was a really nice guy who knew a lot about radio history in NY and always had a very sweet disposition. He was not well for several years, but we kept in touch via the web for a long time.

I saw him last about 2 years ago at the 20th anniversary of WNBC's ending on Oct. 7th, 1988.

He'll be missed. A good man. RIP Peter.
BE BIG! Jay

I last saw Peter last fall at an AES meeting in NYC where I was a speaker. He was definitely one of the good guys, and I'm saddened by his loss.

Here's what I posted on the musicradio77.com website:

It is with regret that I announce the passing of Peter Shamin (aka Peter Shain) on Wednesday, July 7, 2010, 3:30pm at the age of 53.

Peter began his radio career in college in 1974 at New York Tech’s Campus radio station, WNYT and at Queens College radio station WQCC - FM.

He went on to commercial radio in the early 1980’s working at WABC/WPLJ-FM as a Vacation Relief Engineer, WNYG – AM as an Engineer; WMAL-AM/WRQX-FM as a Vacation Relief Engineer; Staff Engineer at WOR Radio; Production Engineer at Westwood One Networks, Vacation Relief Engineer at NBC Radio, Board Operator at WQCD-FM. He was also a disc jockey at WVIP AM & FM in Mount Kisco, New York; WNBC Radio in 1987- 88.

Peter worked in the industry for well over 30 years until ill health forced his retirement, although he continued to take an interest in the industry up to the end.

On a personal note, having known Peter for over 36 years since our college days together and working with him professionally, he was a really good guy; had a lot of talents and loved the business.

He was a frequent participant on this radio forum as well and will be missed.

He is survived by his sister, Pat Sculley and by his very dear friend Elena Nacanther.

I am really sad to hear this. I read this last night and I haven't been able to stop thinking about this all day. Peter and I were friends from the Dentist's board as well as both being Mets fans. Peter loved radio and he loved the Mets. I feel blessed to have known him. He was a big supporter of the North Shore Animal League and I'm sure he would love people to make a donation in his honor.

RIP Peter.

He was a long time member of the NYRMB as well as the Mets message board at mlb.com.

If anyone knows about any memorial for Peter or funeral arrangements, please post them.
