Peter Smyth, overall head honcho of the Greater Media constellation of radio stations, appeared on Emily Rooney's "Greater Boston" on WGBH-TV Tuesday night. (All this "greater" is grating on my nerves.) I had never observed him before, and I could tell instantly that this guy is a former salesman. He made two questionable comments that indicate to me that like so many salesmen, he and the truth have a slippery relationship. Describing the "success" of their FM talker, WTKKK, he claimed that the station appeals to all ages and takes callers including children and teenagers. Huh? I can't recall ANYONE from these groups getting through to the station, unless it's the sports talk-show on the weekends, and what youngster can relate to a dinosaur like Eddie Andleman? And then he stated that the Red Sox are on WEEI-AM. Partially true...but could it be that he just couldn't bring himself to utter the call-letters WRKO, the actual primary broadcaster of the games? Emily had only recently appeared with Marjorie Egan on WTKKK, and perhaps didn't want to correct him, or maybe she just didn't know.
