Peter & WYSP - time to cut your losses!

This morning listening to Stern I realized that although it is with good intentions that WYSP is holding on to Stern out of loyalty - Kleiner is one of the biggest, most loyal Stern fans on the planet; I once heard a story where he actually kicked guests out of his house for bad mouthing Stern - it is time to end it.

Here is why - I had no intention of purchasing Sirius up untill this morning. The more Stern talks about what he is planning to do, what is going on now at his channel, and the way I was FEELING - that I was going to miss something HUGE - compelled me to start pricing out a Sirius unit.

I am now 75% confident that I will be purchasing a Sirius unit and subscription.

What I am saying is that the DLR Morning Show does not have a fighting chance to retain me as a listener. The more that you give Stern a chance to talk about what is going to happen on his channel the more people WYSP is going to loose.

Listeners do not have loyalty to call letters, they have loyalty to the content. There is an emotional connection to Stern. He is playing off of it and manipulating his audience to perfection.

I felt it this morning.

I heard Tom Chiusano put an end to Howard's rant about his Sirius programming today. At the very same time I was asking myself "Why is this guy still on?".

His show is turning out to be a four hour commercial for Sirius.

May I interest you in a new XM unit instead? Better rock stations (Ethel / Lucy / Fred / XMU/Unsigned)? Plus you wouldn't need a trailer to haul the XM unit (as you will need one to carry that huge Sirius brick).

I was also listening this morning. As he was describing his vision for both T.V. and Sat radio, I couldn't help but think to myself, same crap different medium. All squeezed into a 4 day work week. I stopped listening to Stern last year. I decided to tune in a few times last week because Opie & Anthony were on vacation. Heard nothing different than a year ago. He's run out of ideas. His time has come an went. Off course, I couldn't say no to 5 mil either.

For years, I found myself unable to continue listening to Stern's "same old, same old" shtick. I always remembered "the old days," when I'd laugh hysterically at the show...to the point where I was in pain...so I'd still tune in now & then to give it a chance. But it just always felt like a rerun: Nothing new; nothing terribly inventive.

But this Sirius deal seems to have instantly revitalized him and the rest of the show. It's returned to being really entertaining and funny. Sure, they still tend go on and on about a lot of the same things but that's the Howard Stern Show. A lot of it will never change. And who can blame him for doing unofficial commercials for his future home? I'd do the same thing if put in his position.

Here was the point to my initial post:

All those that have been loyally listening to Stern, but yet are undecided about purchasing Sirius, are being given an emotional reason to switch - fear of loss. That they are missing out. That feeling hit me for the first time this morning. As a listener I wanted to be there for that first minute he cracks the mic...that I HAD TO BE THERE. That's the point.

No one is really going to give a sh*t about David Lee Roth. Maybe they come in and sample, but he has the toughest act to follow in the history of radio...and leaving Stern on the air to talk about all the things the listener is "missing" for the next 2 months is just making Roth's job, and WYSP's future that much harder.

I understand your point completely. My point is that as a long-time listener, I was listeneing to him as early as 1983, is that nothing he said this morning or last week compels me to follow him to Sirius. As I said, it's sounds like it will be the same crap as he has been doing. As of 12/17/05, Howard Stern will be off my radar completely. Your feelings are obviously different than mine. But I don't feel there will be the original groundswell that brought him his initial success beginning when he first started syndicating. I don't expect as many people to follow him over to satellite as he/they are hoping for. But then again, I could be wrong. We shall see.

His audience will clearly be slashed many times over...but his audience will surely be the largest audience of any program/channel on either of the satellite services. Anyone disagree?

ONE HUNDRED PERCENT AGREE!!! XM also has better portables and is coming out with an MP3/XM combo unit and you have O&A and Ron and Fez. Who definitly out weigh Howard and BUBBA in my opinion. Although I dont really care for ANY of them. I love my XM. And I've browsed Sirius... but XM beats it by a long shot ESPECIALLY on the Rock front. My friend a LOYAL Sirius listener says his two or three Rock Stations are VERY repeatitive. XM not so much.

I just did it. Sirius Sportster/Boombox combo on its way to my house now. I'm now a dual satellite service subscriber. Never thought I'd do it!

As much as I love hearing Opie & Anthony rip on "Hoo-Hoo", I just HAD to get in on the Stern end of things, too.
