Phil and Brent out at KMOD Tulsa

Per Brent Douglas Twitter feed this morning:

@BrentDouglas1 - Thanks for the almost 27 years you folks have let us have fun and get paid for it. Don't know what's next but I'll bet it won't compare.
@BrentDouglas1-Out next week, then it's a weeklong blowout after over a 1/4 of a century. Few media people get the chance to say bye, so thanks KMOD.
@BrentDouglas1-sorry about the cryptic shit, but yea, the phil and brent show will be no more after oct 12, 2012. spanks for the mammaries.

What the hell happened? Clear Channel finally doing to Tulsa what it's done to almost every one of its markets across the country by running all local talent off?

Another update:

Clear Channel management told News On 6, "it's fair to say that we could not reach a mutual agreement on a contract extension," and details for the new morning show will be announced soon.

Cheap Channel has been dismantling talent around the nation. What took them so long in Tulsa?

A quarter century is a long time to be in a station. Good luck, Phil and Brent.

Tulsa is a "heritage" market for CC. I think the acquisition of KMOD and 1300 may have been their first step out of San Antonio. I am very sorry that it has come to this.

I don't think that's fair.

I'm certainly no fan of Clear Channel, and I'm a big fan of Phil and Brent, but the simple fact is the day of big morning shows is over.

20 years ago, you could invest a lot in a big mornings show, and if it was successful, reap huge rewards from that investment.

Today, there's this thing called the recession. Even before that showed up, PUR was plummeting, print and TV were slashing rates trying to hold onto their share of the revenue pie, and internet advertising, google, etc. were coming into the picture.

Things are only going to get tougher for radio, not better.

The bottom line is, if a morning show costs you "X", and you can generate "Y" revenue from that show, you'd better see "Y>X", or you're screwed.

There's a reason even major market morning shows are now syndicating; it allows the company to lay off some of the cost of them. Again, you're only going to see more of that.

Phil and Brent are major market morning show in a medium market. For years, that was a huge plus for KMOD; it made them a lot of money, but today, the money just isn't there to be made anymore.

I'll take that bet. I think they will.

I'd be really surprised. I don't know how well they've managed their money, but they've been well paid for a long, long time. There aren't many places that could come close to the money they've been making, and at their age, the draw of living a comfortable retirement and not having to live that God-awful lifestyle dictated by doing a morning show must be a powerful temptation.

You never get used to getting up that early ..... never.

This reminds me of when Charlie Derek &Mark O'Connell got hired from KRAV to do Twin Cities morning show in the late 1980s. KRAV immediately pulled ‘em – so the other a/c, Magic 99, just as immediately gave ‘em a week with our morning show to say goodbye to all the folks from whose lives they’d otherwise just disappear. Does any other Tulsa station play music close enough to KMOD's that this would make sense to do?

This is awful. I grew up listening to phil and brent every morning, and i still occasionally tune in when i don't have to hear bad music. i am really sad to see them go , the new morning show will not even compare to the greatness that touched the Tulsa airwaves for the last 30 years. KMOD has been slowly dying from clear channel's ownership for years, and now it is completely gone with the cancellation of the smoke house blues, and now Phil and Brent fading away. We need a solid morning show, hopefully Billy Madison makes his way back into the Tulsa market. RIP KMOD and Phil and Brent. loved and missed.

Cheap is the mantra for Cheap Channel. They already own Bob and Tom, as well as other syndication they can plug into KMOD. The 'commode', indeed.

Just flush it.

I hear Bob and Tom occasionally on KRXO when i can DX it,they aren't very good and i will not be listening if they end up on KMOD. i'll stick to Howard Stern and 102.5 the bone from tampa

There are a lot of unanswered questions with this story no one seems intent on answering.

What lead to Phil and Brent's departure in the first place? What specifically could they not agree to terms to after 27 years?

Why after saying the final show would be October 12 the final show was September 28? Why did it become the final show after the show was over? Brett Douglas hints that wasn't the plan. KMOD/Clear Channel put out its statement around 5p Friday indicating things had changed from what was said Thursday.

Based on Twitter talk it appears Mary Moore and Brett Thompson are gone too. Why?

There's WAY more to this story. Stop taking Clear Channel's face saving lies at face value. Phil, Brent, Mary, and Brett deserve to have their side of the story heard/told.

I hope they get to do good radio via syndication soon. The money was too good for them to leave their confort zone before. If they want to do their show in syndication I feel they will have the freedom to be funny again and actually enjoy radio again. We shall see...

you think Phil and Brent will be back on radio?? i think they may retire from the mic. but considering it wasn't on their terms, who knows, they may still have the radio bug, or just a cash bug.
