Phil Boyce

The once mighty ABC Radio Network and it's powerful O&O's don't exist anymore. Just licensing agreements with also rans. This is just the start of the talent exodus. Are Doug Limerick, Vic Ratner and Anne Compton dusting off their resumes?

I doubt we'd see another demolition of a radio network (let alone two at the same time) as when Westwood One merged NBC Radio and Mutual.

I surely hope that the departure of Phil Boyce as PD of WABC does not mean the end of Saturday Night Oldies and WABC Rewound. Phil Boyce made WABC the number 1 talk station in the nation but he was also interested in the music heritage of WABC as well.

Boyce and FOX

FOX's radio news/talk programs need greater station clearance in major markets. Boyce and FOX would be a perfect fit.

I'm so sad to see Phil Boyce go from WABC, don't worry, the Saturday Night Oldies Show will still be around as well as the WABC's annual "Rewound" will also be around for quite a long time playing those airchecks from the days of WABC when it was a top 40 station in the 60's and 70's.

When the new program director of WABC is appointed The Saturday Night Oldies enthusiasts should e-mail him/her and offer congratulations for attaining that position. They should bring out the following points:

1. Listenership to talk radio would be low on Saturday nights
2. They can try to lure oldies listeners to the regular talk programming on WABC.
3. Listenshio to talk radio is very low on a major summer holiday

Phil Boyce's Replacement?

So, who is line for the WABC gig?
Has Boyce tapped someone already or is another big market PD in line?
Bob Shomper? Robin Bertolucci? Eric Braverman? Kipper McGee?

Re: Phil Boyce's replacement...?

My guess is that Farid will do what Farid always does: cut the salary from the bottom line, and bestow the title on someone in-house. That's when the real fun begins...

Hardly. They work for ABC News, not for the Citadel-owned ABC Radio Networks. Their paychecks are coming from the Mouse. Citadel has a 10-year deal to sell/represent ABC News Radio, but no role in the actual news production.

I have to agree with the comment made by Bruce S. The replacement for Phil Boyce has to be very familiar with the programing of WABC. This would include Saturday Night Oldies.

In the business of radio, anything is possible as we've all seen. However, a major plus is the fact Mark Simone not only hosts Saturday Night Oldies in addition to his Saturday talk show. Mark frequently fills in for other talk show hosts. Having worked at WABC for 15 years, I believe it's safe to say SNO will continue with Mark in control.

I've heard from friends who should know that work on Rewound 2009 has stopped pending clarification on who will be in charge.

It would be very foolish if the new program director cancelled WABC Rewound. Audience for talk radio would be very slow on a major holiday in the summer.

Bruce

And frankly, it would be very foolish if the new program director would even give ANY thought to "Rewound", "Saturday Night Oldies" or any such show ahead of, well, the regular weekday schedule...

Not that its related at all (its not), but,
on a day where the Dow has its biggest one-day jump in history,
Citadel stock has lost 2/3rds of its value (under .40 a share)...scary.
