Phil Hendrie In, John and Jeff Out

How come "The Phil Hendrie Show" is now heard on 101.1 WZTK, and 680 WPTF?. The show is even heard at the same time on both stations. I thought both stations could reach the Triad and Triangle areas, especially at 1:00am.

I could listen to Mr. Hendrie all day long, I think he is a radio genius and carved himself a niche I have not heard in any other market.

My next question... Why did WZTX drop the "John and Jeff Show"?

Thanks,
Stuart

WPTF reaches way south, but only like 15 miles north after dark. They might get out a little farther west, but not to the Triad usually.

WZTK probably dropped "John and Jeff" because they had a better show available. They were on there for a few years, they tried.
Hendrie's also on both stations at the same time because that's when he's live.
I'd much rather have Hendrie on two of my stations than John & Jeff on one. John & Jeff never seemed to get off the ground. Hendrie starts on the fifth step.

Just a quick side question. I thought WPTF was a "Free Range Station" (if that is the phrase) and could go 750 miles in all directions. If this is true, how come the signal can only travel 15 or so miles north, west, (and probably east)?

Thanks

Not "free range." "Clear channel." 50 kw. Sounds big in the daytime, but they're limited at night by their antenna patterns and the nighttime skies. [Actually not all 50 kw signals are "750 miles" in the daytime either, but I digress.]

They aren't entirely clear though, there's a 680 in Boston [I think] that they kind of share the "clear channel" [as much as they have of one] with, so their antennas are set up to null out most of their power to the north.

Add in the atmospheric conditions at night that hamper all AM broadcasting.
Thus, they barely get out of Wake County at night. But they used to get calls from Miami pretty regularly, from what I've heard.

Some engineer-types can tell you more details, but that's the layman's gist.
BTW how about those Dookies? ;)

WPTF is neither clear-channel nor "free-range" (I think that only applies to cows and chickens :p)

WPTF is a Class-B AM station. It must protect the nighttime signals of KNBR, a Class-A station on 680 in San Francisco, and WRKO, another Class-B on 680 in Boston. Consequently, the WPTF night signal has nulls going roughly northeast and west.

Seventy years ago when the current WPTF transmitter site was built, the areas north and west of Raleigh were mostly farmland and nobody cared if you couldn't hear the station so well out there. Obviously things are different today. There are lots of heritage AM stations out there whose intended audience has outgrown their coverage area.

More to the subject line, I used to listen to Phil Hendrie quite a bit when I was actually living in his time zone (West Coast). The guy is a freakin' genius and the show was a hoot. The most entertaining part was listening to the callers who just didn't "get it" and were getting themselves all in a lather over comments made by Phil's "guest".

Sorry but you guys have some of dis mixed up. Phil is not on 600 any more. There's a lady Dr. or somethign on there now according to my sources. Phil was interesting back when his phone voice didn't shound just like the real voice. Now it sounds like hes talking to himself on the phone and sometimes not on the phone and that really exposes it and its a shame for the old fans who are probably not listening at that hour any way. Also, Jon and Jeff were a great gay show and probably the best one since Rob and Febs who are teh tops for sure. They will be missed. Phil, welcome to town but you need to shake some hands in Winston if you are gonna pull it off here, pal!

I knew WPTF isn't "clear channel" but that was the closest thing I could analogize "free range" to. That's why I put it in quotes.
If they were really "clear channel" we wouldn't be having that part of the discussion. It would go more than 15 miles to the north. :D

I watched Hendrie do his show once - it was amazing - four or five different telephones (for different sounds) and one incredibly talented individual. My favorite was the "lady" who called to complain that her neighbor's cat was such a slut!

Right. Most of Durham's residents were horses, sheep and goats.

Too bad this isn't on at 11 any more. That was fun.
