Phil Hendrie Announces Retirement From RadioPhil HendriePREMIERE RADIO NETWORKS is announcing that PHIL HENDRIE is retiring from radio effective JUNE 23 to continue his acting career. HENDRIE is in the cast of the current NBC sitcom "TEACHERS" and has provided voices ...
Although his program would not be called a progressive talk program, it is carried on several Clear Channel progressive talkers against a crowed field of evening progressive talk hosts (Mike Malloy, Lionel, Alan Colmes). No word yet on whether Premiere Radio will be another show in the slot.

I said on both my blog and SweetFeatheryJesus.com (A Hendrie fan forum) that I think this has a lot to do with his growing irritation over having to play by the FCC's rules in terms of "decency" (which I've also made my opinion clear about 'round these parts many times over). Hendrie is always complaining about the restrictive environment the decency regulations provide, so there's no doubt in my mind he's simply had enough.I've wondered if he would ever jump to satellite, but given his recent bit about how lame satellite programming is to begin with, I have my doubts. Neither Sirius nor XM would likely want him bashing their service on their own dime.

Yes, and he said that on last night's show he might make the jump. So I very well could be wrong about him not doing so. However, he won't be on XM when his show goes off the air unless he specifically signs with them.

This bums me out.. First KFI Los Angeles dumps him, then San diego moves him to 10pm, and now he's gone.. I guess I'll hafta buy some of his CD's.

What in the world will I listen to after he's gone? I guess I'll just go to bed. :'(

Many people predicted this when he was dumped from KFI...I think he took a hit when he pushed a weight lost product...since yanked by the FTC, that didn't work....even on him..he is good at making different voices..but that might make a difference in a live act not so much on radio...plus he might have tweeked some of his audiance when he backed the war in Iraq in a big way...

I don't know that the weight loss product issue hurt him. I thought he dealt with that pretty well... and a couple of pretty funny bits came out of it!The Iraq war thing... eh, that could be part of it, considering he was on several libtalk stations. I'm of the opinion that he didn't really spend much time on it... he'd bring up his support for the war in bits from time to time, but I can only think of one time he ever really spent a segment talking about it. Still, though, the fact that he supports the war and that he brought that support up during bits could very well have played a part.As sdwulfdog said, though, it sounded like he was getting tired of it. And Hendrie himself said just that the night of the announcement: he just couldn't do it anymore, not in the current climate of fear of FCC fines. There's so much material that he wants to do that isn't necessarily raunchy in terms of wording (he's even pointed out that it's funnier when Lloyd Bonafide says "G.D." instead of the full phrase) but in terms of subject matter, and I can totally understand his lack of interest in putting up with that garbage.

Re: Phil Hendrie TV or Vegas stand-up

He is talented ....maybe he should try a stand up act in Vegas or become part of Beacher's Madhouse or something ....or get a TV show together...

The loss of Hendrie's show is the biggest set-back to talk radio since the migration of Howard Stern to Sirius. Talk radio can't keep losing these unique talents. There is no one that replace Hendrie. He's unique and like Stern attracts young male listeners that are not listening to political talk. If Limbaugh croaked tomorrow, his time spot would be filled within a month with no loss of ratings. Same thing goes for Franken. When Stern left terrestrial radio, his 5 and 6 shares were replaced by by 1's and 1.5's by Roth and Carolla. Same thing is going to happen with whoever replaces Hendrie.

Then what are you going to do about Hannity's "shares" in PM drive (mostly on the same stations)? And, no, if Limbaugh "croaked" ther stations which carry his shows would take a big hit. Hannity's numbers would also drop without Rush as a lead in. Probably numbers in all dayparts would drop. Hendrie is not a big loss. Stern is morning drive; Hendrie is late night. Radio is like those small towns where they roll up the sidewalks after dark. And even given the smaller late night audience, he was not the dominant figure in his daypart like Stern or Rush.
