Phil Hendrie used to be very independent, but it would now seem his latest schtick is his turn to the right and using that really irritating moniker, "Radio for patriots done by patriots." He used to slam the Tea Party and now that seems to be a thing of the past...

PHIL HENDRIE'S RIGHT TURN SHIFT

That would make him the house conservative on his NY affiliate progressive talker WWRL, not including Mary Matolin on the show Both Sides Now with Arianna Huffington and Mark Green.
If Hendrie has turned that far right, he won't be on WWRL for long. Then again, there aren't many who can hear him on 1600 AM in the NY area overnight. 
I am not that far from the station and I know that I can't hear them at night. My only option is to webstream the station after dark.
I heard him recently talk about how stupid he thinks conservatives are, but he seems unhappy at how the left is censoring speech more that the right these days. I think his position is he doesn't care.

phil hendrie is good entertanment.i never thought about him as doing legitimate political discussion.
Phil kinda did the same thing between 2004 and 2006 when he gave up the Premiere Radio show (at one point, he registered the domain georgewbushisgod[dot]com).

He may be like a Dennis Miller type that may not necessarily be a _social_ conservative. Whatever works for him, politics and entertainment-wise.
This may also be a strategy by syndicator TRN, which seems to be run by hardcore conservatives who are in the radio business, as opposed to people in the radio business who may or may not be conservative. TRN likes to structure shows that may have appeal beyond the conservative talk radio base (the news blocks, Hendrie, and the recent Mancow refurbishing into a morning zoo format) but still manages to deliver the "right" message. It's as if they're evangelizing to the "heathen." Listen to their "news blocks" -- they may not be straight-ahead conservative talk radio and may appear objective, but in terms of topic selection, they're more like Fox News Channel than Fox News Radio is -- and certainly moreso than WCBS or WTOP.
There's no question that Phil Hendrie is one of the most talented radio hosts on the airwaves. He as well as other hosts whose crux of their content is nonpolitical will do well long term. However, with 2012 coming on our heels, and the polarization we are seeing in this country, I'm not surprised that some hosts are trying to appeal to the political heart strings of their listeners. I hope Phil Hendrie doesn't fall into the trap and stays apolitical as his most successful shows have been.
The liners are clearly meant as a joke. A joke on radio. "We can't win this fight alone.... call the patriot hotline now" all while interviewing Ted Bell of Ted's of Beverly Hills.
