Phil Manning Gone

Phil Manning resigns today. The END rumored to be flipping to a non-music FM format soon. How many programmers have resigned? I told you in earlier posts things are changin! Marcus D, Lisa A and others are the future. Look for KBKS to benefit the most from the departure of the END. KISW and KMTT will also benefit so it is a smart move, plus Entercom locks up the talk world on AM and FM. I said it before things are changin! New winners are KBKS, JACK, MOVIN. The old programmers are gettin out while the gettin is good. I bet their is a party at KISW and KBKS tonight.

OK - I'll give you the End struggles being as relevant as during the height of Grunge...but unless I'm completely nuts, didn't Entercom just have a talk FM station? And the truth is they worked it hard and The Buzz sounded pretty good. So what part of 'been-there-done-that' do they need to do over again?

Yeah I don't see the End going to a talk format either, but I do think some big changes need to be made if the station wants to be competitive again. Isn't Kim Monroe available now?

I saw that as well about a month ago, but then again I think her departure from extreme in Cleveland wasn't her decision and if she sees another opportunity to hop back into the game and wants to come back to Seattle, I think she definitely would consider it.

Why does "spoken word" have to mean the BUZZ revisited. Let's see there is no SPORTS FM in Seattle (seahawks and sonics on FM with sports), there is no Conservative Talk FM in Seattle (KTTH switches to FM with Sonics at night), No NEWS/TALK on FM (KIRO-FM) or better yet put the best of the BUZZ back on (Tom L rated HUGE), Corolla in the AM and something local in the mid-day. What other music format is left that has any potential, without hurting their other stations. Blowing up the END benefits KISW and KMTT. Maybe I am new to town, but maybe new to town is what is needed.

I'm Just A Lissner, but listeners are what it's all about ultimately, right? So here's my thought. Talk is where radio is going. Talk is what any really good programmer would be focusing on. Why? IPod. No matter how well programmed the music mix is, it will never ever be perfect for anyone. If I want music I can program my own and get it exactly "right" every single time. Without commercials. Radio is going to move more and more towards interactive talk fomats. I can't get that by hitting "shuffle" on my IPod. Ironically, I think it is also going to move more local. When talk radio is its best it is live and real-time so that callers physically interact with the show; this is done best local or semi-local. Mark my words. In the next ten years FM Talk won't be a format of its own. It will be segmented by then into a variety of talk formats. There will be sports talk, conservative talk, liberal/progressive talk, family-oriented "country"-talk, women-focussed talk, all on FM. Music will be a supporting player, not the main player. Morning drive now should be a signal.I don't claim to KnowItAll, but I HaveAFewThoughtsAndIdeas! JustALissner

The End needs to tweak their format and go back to a more "classic alternative" format, stickwith the staples - Cure, Morrissey, Talking Heads, Clash, Ramones, etc.The younger "alternative" demo is populated with Ipod listeners who would rather set their own playlists and listen to what they want when they want to.Phil left I imagine because either they told him that they were going to flip the format and he had put too many years in there for that to be the way he goes out, or because he received a big job offer which I don't imagine to be the case though he is a talented programmer. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

If you have another big offer somewhere, you do the right thing and give a notice and make sure the staff is ready to take the helm once you leave. His resignation was effective immediately so to me that sounds like a "were changing things and your not a part of it" exit, "but we'll let you to save face and allow you to announce your resignation instead of canning you."

Well ENdfest 15 was just announced lineup today..and that is going to happen on 8/12/06.So maybe there is a format change in a year or so..but not for another 3 months at the very least.

I think KJR-AM has the market on sports talk in the area. Might be hard to break in for a new sports station on FM
