PHILADELPHIA ARBITRON PPM RATINGS RELEASED: APRIL 2010

A WMID format, lets say on a FM signal like 97.5 would do very well and probably topple OGL...just the facts...if its never been tried dont dispute it...

And that's why radio sucks. companies gobbling up stations, playing the shit music in the same rotation. There is nothing unique about any of them. All pandering to the lowest common denominator. playing shit music to people with bad taste, gutting the station of radio personalities, replacing them with button pushers and destroying radio all in the name of profit.GOOD CHOICE LOL LOL and by the way genius, if you would read your dictionary it is spelled with either a "z" or an "s".

"cookie-cutter" programing are what people are use to. And that is the problem. When you do not give people a choice of genres, a variety of programs, what do you think they'll prefer? people listen to and buy this crap not because it's good but because it's all they are fed by corporate radio.
As Alan Sherman once so eloquently remarked, "Uhh Boyyyyy!" Here we go again with the "music sucks" rant. This argument always reminds me of "The Music Police." It smacks of elitism (as much as I've come to hate the politicization of the word), IOW, "the music I like is great, the music the great unwashed prefers is dreck."

As if there weren't bad songs in the doo-wop, 55-63 era. For every great song like the Skyliners "Since I Don't Have You" there was another song that flat out sucked bilge and probably two songs that don't warrant being played on the radio because the only reason they were first played was some under assistant east coast record guy greased some jock's palm.

"Beep Beep" by the Playmates (Top 5, 1958) has no place on the radio today. Even a magnificent song like the Skyliners' "Since I Don't Have You" doesn't work in the 25-54 demo anymore. WOGL may not be your Oldies/Classic hits station, but the ratings say it's successful and the bottom line most likely reflects this too.

Radio is a business, just like any other business. The owners aren't as interested in the "art" of radio as in making money doing radio. So if a station can go to the bird and carry such un-inspired shows (in my opinion) as Glenn Beck, Rush, and Hannity and make money doing that, even though the owner is a lib democrat, he/she will do that (think Rupert Murdock and the Fox News Channel or Reverend Young Sun Moon and the Washington Times).

Many jocks and owners of radio stations, back in the day, didn't especially like Rock and Roll (they were from the previous generation and probably preferred Big Bands and crooners - think Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, etc, but the prized demo - the young- liked Elvis, Bill Haley and the Comets, the Penguins, Gary US Bonds, The Coasters, The Duprees, etc, so they played Rock and Roll. That's where the money was to be made. Purely a business decision. That's what WOGL is doing. Personally I don't like their station, but I understand what they are doing, and doing quite well apparently. Yes, I do wish there was a second such station that played a different mix of Greatest Hits, that for my ear would be more listenable than WOGL, but from a business point of view, WOGL is sitting real pretty right now. Who knows, maybe the jocks, and owners of WOGL hate their format too, but this is business and they are making good money with good ratings for their corporate owner. Bottom line.

Now if only one of the lesser performing FM's in the Philly market would challenge WOGL and create a better Greatest Hits station for the city of brotherly love. That would be interesting to hear and watch. However, most stations do seem to want to steer away from the upper end of the ad demo, so they'll avoid a greatest hits station. I could see WYSP or WIOQ going to greatest hits with a splash of Classic Rock thrown in. That might be an interesting mix, the best of WMGK and WOGL without the disco and heavy reliance on Motown.

A WMID format on a Philly Fm station? Forget about it.

As stated earlier in this thread, 50s oldies...DOO WOP...appeals to a 65 plus demo.

In another 5 years, stations like OGL and CBS FM will be ready to delve into the early 90s to be relevant.

You can turn back the clock only so far and yet still remain in business if you're doing the "pop" version of Classic Hits.

a) Just my opinion...Calling Limbaugh uninspired indicates ignorance of his show, or abject political bias. The other two, no dispute.

b) This was tried before, in 1987. It was a four way oldies race, with two AM's (WFIL and the then WPGR), and two full signal FM's (WOGL and WIOQ). 'OGL came out the winner. Of course, it was a better station then.

I'd like another terrestrial option over WOGL, too. But I'm not holding my breath. And for a small fee, the folks at XM provide great commerical free 50's, 60's and 70's. I don't even pay for TV, but XM is worth it.

The problem I have with the music channels especially the decades on Satellite is way too much yakking...I have satellite just not to hear all this talk...I just want to hear music but they chatter more than T radio....especially on 50's and 60's, if I wanted to hear talk I would just listen to T-radio....and since the merger last year the talk is more and more...WMID has less talk and more music than XM or Sirius.

You really think they talk too much, Oasis? I listen to Phlash Phelps on 6 in the morning, and I am reminded of what radio once was. A real personality, I think he is. I like a little conversation between the music, just like WFIL and Wibbage were, back in the day. Remember the old Wibbage TOH jingle "You're with WIBG, where it's one between the music that counts...(insert DJ name)? If you want just music, 'MID is a good option. I like a little personality with my music!

I guess I am getting too old for talk with my music...I was spoiled with the old WIBBAGE listening to Stevens, Wright, the Bird, Hy, Feller, Brink, Justice, and for you real old timers the old DAWN (Donahoe, Arthur, Wright and Niagara) back in the day at WIBBAGE. The chatter annoys me especially the two night jocks Carter on 50's and Motormouth on 60's....the only jocks I can take are Nite, Morrow and Bobby B because they are the old pros....MC is great without any talk but the variety is lame....Never sampled Urge yet...and I do know the Satellite and Verizon cable outlets have their own music services besides the big names and they sound great also.....

I did say it was my opinion. I've listened to Rush since the 1990's. Listened almost every day back when Clinton was President. Frankly his act has gotten old. Some of the parodies I like, but his ranting is, for my ear, boring. I rarely listen any more. When I tune in, it isn't a half hour and I've tuned to another station. It's sort of like having the same preacher for 20 years. After a while, you've heard all he has to say (that's probably one reason among others too that church denominations move pastors around every so many years). It's the same with Rush. He has nothing new or interesting to say. I could write his monologue. So, for my ear, his show is uninspired. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

Maybe on a rimshot... how's WVLT holding up as Philly's "oldies" station?

As Philly is a PPM market, if you check out their rankings here on RI for 12+, you'll see stations from all over the Delaware Valley, Lehigh Valley, Wilmington, South Jersey, and NYC, but no WVLT. So I'd have to guess that they are a non entity in Philly. In fairness to WVLT, their signal isn't all that great in Wilmington I'd not even consider it a Wilmington rimshot station, where it will show very modest 12+ numbers. I believe, Philly is further away from Vineland than Wilmington, so even less signal and apparently no ratings.

Does WVLT even encode for PPM? Somehow, I doubt it. I think Oasisrulz can verify that 92.1 can be received at least in South Philly. Of course CC is tough due to intermod.
