Philadelphia Arbitron Radio Ratings: May 2011

What keeps WPPZ going so well?

A casual readout suggests that they must have one of the best and most consistent time-spent-listening ratios recorded in a major market -- and with religious programming. There are religion-oriented stations that show up consistently well in some Southern markets, but north of Appomattox, such returns are very spotty.

What makes them so good and their listeners so devout?

First, they play gospel on an FM signal, which, to my knowledge, is rare.
Second, Philly has a large and loyal gospel audience which wasn't being served.
Third, you can listen all day without hearing anything objectionable, which can't be said for most stations.

I am amazed at how well WPST 94.5 is doing. They are right there with WYSP, WXPN, WIP, WPEN and PST is not really programming to Philly, they are more aimed at Trenton, Bucks County, and New Jersey. They must be doing great in Northeast Philly.

Is this the first time WPEN FM + AM = WIP? They both log in with a 2.2.

I know, PEN FM and AM aren't complete simulcasts. But they're both sports and they're both owned by the same company.

WIP-FM 94.1 anyone?

Yes its been time for 94.1 WIP for a long time. If that would happen, WPEN would be dead meat.

I'm always amused at the talk of moving WIP to 94.1. That may have happened in a past life, but probably won't happen in a future one. The WIP brand is solid at 610, it does very well in terms of revenues. YSP does OK in terms of revenues, and yes they really should be doing something to put it back on the map. That being said, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to move it to FM. That leaves another open AM with what format? The numbers don't look like they are working too well for the Fanatic. If people want sports, just like news, they know where to turn.

What's interesting is that WPEN A+F is flat, while WIP is way down.

I think that's because nobody is listening to WIP at night. They're listening to WPHT instead.

The Phillies are popular in Philadelphia. This didn't used to be the case, back when CBS and the Phillies decided to put the games on WPHT instead of WIP because, back then, people wanted to listen to Eagles talk in July. Things have changed.

It's time for CBS to merge the Phillies with their sports station, on SportsRadio 1210, WIP. Move WPHT's format over to 610, and upgrade the 1210 signal to its full 50 kw non-directional clear channel potential. Put the local content on the signal with the widest reach, and the syndicated content, which can be heard on other stations in various parts of the area, on the more local signal.

And the fact that WIP's format is dinosaurically outdated.

The paltry 2.2 rating is justified and hopefully will lead to some changes in the programming and staff. If the geniuses running 97.5 had any clue at all how to run a decent sports talk station WIP would have already been forced to change.

YSP does OK in terms of revenues, and yes they really should be doing something to put it back on the map.

Fire the fossils responsible for the music decisions, and go straight-up Active Rock. Dump the morning show, go music intensive in A.M. Drive, and then try to "woo" Preston & Steven from WMMR once their contract is about to expire.

The fact they've enabled WMMR to own the contemporary hard rock audience by default is unbelievable. Even when WYSP first brought back the rock format and were playing currents & recurrents, their music selection was terrible. Many Active Rock staple artists were completely absent from rotation.

By virtue of WYSP's poorly chosen music position, WMMR is able to control an incredibly wide swath of the rock audience.
