Philadelphia now 7th biggest Arby Market

Houston has leaped by Philadlephia and is now the 6th largest market in the country. Arbitron announced the new listings today.

Maybe Julius is on to something...At this rate, Philadelphia just may become a minor market...

I think the main reasons of this, not clearing enough national programming like play by play sports, air more local programs and stations that are not programmed correctly in my opinion.

Well, Houston does have two sports stations, and one of them is an ESPN affiliate which is carrying the play-offs (and NFL football from Westwood One). The other one is similar to WIP and carries some weekend college football but mostly guy talk. Guess which one gets the better ratings?
OK the guy talk gets slightly better numbers but neither comes close to WIP's numbers. Guy talk barely breaks a one share and ESPN is to the right of the decimal point.
[EDIT] Arbitron rankings are based on metro area population. People have been pointing this out to you for several years and - once again - you refuse to get it. These numbers have nothing to do with programming, quality of programming, ad revenue or listener satisfaction. Unless you are going to claim people are moving out of Philly and heading down to Houston so they can hear the play-offs on ESPN Radio. Heck, people only have to move closer to Trenton for that. Houston - and the sun belt - has been gaining in population and Philadelphia - and the rust belt - have been losing population for decades. The reason is jobs (to a lesser extent cost of living, taxes and quality of life). These are things to which people in the real world pay more attention than radio. [EDIT]

[EDIT--personal attacks.]

Detroit (the city alone, not the metro area) was the first American city IIRC to reach 1,000,000 in population and lose that exalted status. Philly (again, the city alone, not the metro area) may be the second. :(

I'm so drained from calling football in the cold and rain tonight, that for a second I thought Kyle was talking about Arby's. I could go for some right now. :D

Jim: I thought the same! I was like "WTF?" when I first read the headline! I wish they had Arby's up here where I live. I could go for one of those roast beef sandwiches!

Wanna spring for some chicken tenders, curly fries, and mozzarella sticks?

Haha! Sounds fine to me! Perhaps when I am back in the area to visit family...which should be in two or three weeks.

Philadelphia is a bad fast food market. Arby's says they are in Philadelphia but I can not walk to Arby's in my neighborhood. Philadelphia is the number 7 Arby's market and we deserve Arby's in every neighborhood. I complained to the manager of the McDonald's in my neighborhood that he don't sell roast beef sandwiches or curly fries and he blocked my phone calls. I want to call McDonalds in Oakbrook, Illinois but my mother says she can't afford to let me make long distance phone calls. My job coach says to stop complaining to fast food places so I can get a job. Call Arby's and tell them to put an Arby's in my neighborhood. We should be able to go to Arby's without spending an hour and a half on the bus to go to King of Prussia. What does you think.

I think the main reasons of this, not clearing enough national sandwiches like Big Macs, sell more local sandwiches and menus that are not programmed correctly in my opinion.

Anybody notice an Arby's Jamocha shake tastes like a Starbuck's Mocha Frappuccino?
And both taste like a Separator: Equal parts Brandy, Kahlua and cream; blended with crushed ice.
No wonder Arby's is down. Their shake doesn't wake you up or give you a buzz.

Arby's blows. The two best fast food chains are Steak 'N Shake and Hardee's/Carl's Jr. The closest Steak and Shake is in North Carolina to the best of my knowledge. The closest Hardee's is in Dover, which unfortunately requires a trip to Delaware.

The Top 10 markets are always fluctuating outside of the Top 3.

Detroit used to be #5, now is what #10?

Dallas, Philly, and Houston are all within a few hundred thousand people, which in this size market is a small amount.

You wanna talk about growth? Look for Las Vegas to be in the Top 20 in the next 5-10 years.

Detroit is now #9. It moved up from #10. Boston got bumped back to #11.

That's the kind of growth Arby's restaurants are looking into! I'm sorry I even made the bad initial reference to the restaurant, lol.

More on topic: Growth in population. If Chuck Woolery doesn't pimp real estate for it, it must not be true. Only kidding. lastdj, I think you're dead on about Vegas being a spring, natural or otherwise, of potential growth. The market is currently 800,000 or so shy of being in the top 20. I'd give them closer to 15 years perhaps to make it in the top 20.

Boston's drop out of the top 10 is a bigger issue in terms of market revenue. Outside the top 10 may mean less national dollars for the stations to fight over.
An interesting " rust belt" observation was that in the mid 80's Philly went from 5th to 6th, losing rank to San Francisco.

Yeah Jeff (aka Roscoe)...you will openly say something "sucks" when it's totally against your opinon. That's the same behavior the folks on the Brand X Jr. Board pull often. You dislike anyone that has an opinion that's the total opposite of yours. ::)

Things are so dead over on their nazi board, [EDIT] moderators have started coming over here. They've finally managed to ban everyone who doesn't agree with their extreme and hate-filled views and I guess they've found the complete conformity they wanted makes for a dull board with dull people making dull posts, even given all the insults and invective. You can see where on the talk radio totem pole these people are: Hannity is a Rush wannabe. O'Reilly is a Hannity wannabe. Gallagher is an O'Reilly wannabe. Maloney is a Gallagher wannabe. Tilde/McCleary is a 100 watt Maloney wannabe. He got banned here, so he gets even by starting his own board where he can insult everybody, delete anything and ban anybody. I have no evidence that GB or the Radio Racket "cast" was part of that but I can see where you and others might think so by the company they keep.

Lance and Alan Sniffen are models of restraint, tolerance and open-mindedness compared to the nazi board crew.

[EDIT-vulgarity]

You are correct there Fred. GB only has moderating duties on our forums at the site in question. We have nothing to do with the rest of the forums held there.
When we were in the planning stages for the show, Gary was gracious enough to offer us our own forum on his site. We were very thankful that he offered and took him up on it, but that's where it ends. We have no say on what happens on the other forums there, and Gary can chop anything from ours that he wants to.

Gary has done a lot over the years for the radio message board community here in Philadelphia, all because of the love he has for radio.
