Anybody else a bit disappointed with “Free FM”?

When I found out about this new Hot Talk format, I was hoping that Infinity would bring in some new people that would make this whole thing easier to listen to. As somebody in their prime demographic, I was hoping for younger, edgier talent. Now, I just find it hard to believe that the very best they could do for Mornings is David Lee Roth and for Mid-days, Paul Barsky and his Zoo.

Why curse us with these archaic dinosaurs? Why Infinity ignores the possibility that newer talent might exist somewhere (just need to put some effort into finding it) baffles me.

The overabundance of dinosaur personalities (at both WMMR and FREE FM) is making me enjoy my XM satellite radio more and more.

Infinity had a great opportunity to bring in some new edgy talent into Philadelphia. What did we get? The same old crap we’ve all heard before (i.e. Barsky).

What next? Perhaps Preston and Steve will join them in a few years to complete this pre-historic radio lineup?

Let completely close the door to new talent in Philadelphia.

Perhaps FREE-FM retains the younger audience by "twisting" their rock format Alternative? Who knows? Let’s hope they do that right. I would think my monthly research call is at least helping them figure that one out.

Philadelphia is like a giant room with alot of rubber balls bouncing around in it. the rubber balls represent the philly air jocks and the room is the philly radio market. this city is incerdibly closed minded to new air talent that is up and coming. Philly is notorious for recycling the same talent. That's why Matt cord went from WMMR to Y100 and back to WMMr. P&S went from Y100 to WMMr. Mike Missanelli and Conklin went from WIP to WMMR and Missanelli went back to WIP, and Barsky has been all over every important station, and so has Kim "jug-a-lugs" Douglas. It gets old quick.

With only a couple of radio station owners and syndicated shows on many smaller market stations, new talent is not developing. That is scary. With little new talent given room to grow, what is the future of radio? Dismal.

New talent is developing go read every fricking posting on Allaccess for jobs. 5 or more years experience blah blah blah. WHERE ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO GET THIS EXPERIENCE.

I started my career in Philly and now find myself doing a very limited on air role in a smaller market. Why? Because even as I graduated college with two internships under my belt and 4 years of college radio on air and management experience no one was biting on me.

New = Scary and Consultants and PDs don't want new they want safe and cuddly.

My point exactly. It used to be joked that in order to get a radio job (or any industry position for that matter) you had to be 25 years old with 21 years experience. If no one will give you a chance, where do you get the experience?

The only jobs out there for younger would be talent are board op or producing jobs. That gets boring REAL fast, not to mention that you would need two or three jobs just to pay the rent and buy Big Macs.
