Philadelphia radio in my perspective.
I’m a 22 year old white male from the suburbs (Chester County/Delaware County line). I have spent the last 4 years of my life as delivery drive for a construction company covering the tri state region. The only means of entertainment while spending 20-25 hours a week in my company truck is an am/fm head unit no cd or tape deck. I don’t consider myself any kind of expert on radio or know how these stations are rated or set for but from my own personal listening habits and those of my friends which I must say are predominantly white. I have come up with the following. (I am not racist by any means but this is how I see the Philly radio market. I apologize if this offends anyone)
Wired 96.5 mainly markets themselves towards white teens and plays popular rap
Q 102 Markets themselves as a lighter 96.5 pre teen, teen, 18-35 yr old females the station a mother would put on for her kids with decent clean pop music
Power 99 seems to have kept themselves marketed as rap station not playing much of the pop R&B. Which the other stations play.
The Beat 100.3 Which I believed was originally marketed as a power 99 competition has seemed to change now to something in between 99 and 96.5 by taking over y100’s signal they may have allowed themselves to pick up the predominantly white listeners who still had their preset set for y 100.
As for Rock stations
102.9 MGK Mostly 70’s 80’s rock Marketed towards white 35-50 year old men
93.3 MMR Decent mix of rock market towards white men 18-30 years old. The old Philly guy’s morning show seemed to set for 25-35 male market. The Preston and Steve show seems to broaden that range to 18-35 with more of a female audience then the Philly guys. They also brought over listeners from Y100 who felt homeless. And during the show you hear some Y100 style music on occasion.
94.1 WYSP They seemed some what confused from Stern then all rock all day to Stern then rock then O&A then all talk all day Stern then D&M then O&A so on and so on. They play decent music when the play music this Kidd Chris show seems like he is definitely trying to be the AM replacement for Stern. When Stern leaves they better have REALLY good morning show planned because other wise most of the listeners who carry over from Stern aren’t going to be there. I believe there is going to be problems down the road for WYSP
As for any other stations I’m sorry I don’t listen to much other then what I listed I personally miss The Point they had upbeat 80's rock that didn’t repeat all day. But these are just my opinions on the stations I listen to most of the day.
PS Does anyone know if the Big Mama Show all lives together I thought they said something along those lines today on the air thought it was kind of strange
PS PS KYW is good for a few things! Get traffic on the 2’s Check weather when you’re driving and haven’t read the paper/looked online/watched TV in a few days and the final reason almost all the stations I listed above play the same 10 songs over and over. The news is always something different
Edited by Scoop531 on 10/13/05 05:37 AM.
