Philadelphia Radio PPM Ratings: April 2018

R1 better pack up and leave town, unless they realize their mistakes in blowing up WPLY and WIBF and bringing back the Alternative format the way it used to be. They must realize this is not the Baltimore/DC markets, totally different listeners...

I presume you mean "Radio One" when you talk about "R1". Radio One changed name to Urban One a year ago.

Why would Urban One change any of their three FMs to alternative, when all three bill as much as or more than the existing alternative station, WRFF, which has declined or been flat in revenue every year since 2012?

Exactly. I love Alternative as much as anyone on this board, and want to see Radio 104.5 succeed, but you're never going to have an Alternative battle in Philly with how little WRFF bills.

Urban One makes more money on the pea sized signals of 103.9 and 107.9 under their current formats than the full-signal 104.5 does. The ratings may not be on fire, but they're doing fine.

Sooner or later, Entercom will have to do something with WPHT 1210 AM. They are next to last among the commercial radio stations in Philly with a 1.5. last in cume among the commercial radio stations in Philadelphia The bleeding has to stop. How to go about it is the question. Entercom is not being held hostage with this format. They can get out of this format at any anytime for a new one or even sell 1210 AM to someone else. I know you guys are tired of me posting about 1210 AM, but my points are valid here. Its clear the station is in dire straits and been that way for several years. Yes, 1210 makes money, but if you make a lot of money and don't get good ratings, that's a problem. You must have both good ratings and make a lot of money to survive.

Oh good lord, not this nonsense again. This time with the added silliness that if you make good money but don’t get good ratings. Businesses run on money. Not meaningless numbers that are worth every penny you paid to see them...as in none. To survive, to be more accurate, you need profitability. 1210 currently delivers that. Please end this rediculous quest.

And regarding WMGK, it does make sense. Business is hard, and sometimes hard decisions are necessary. It happens.

If this money first explanation that everyone talks about is true, then explain why R1 blew up a money making format WPLY for their urban product they are noted for. They never made up for the loss of cash on 100.3 since they flipped Y-100. So in some cases its not the bucks that matter, its other things.

They THOUGHT they could make more money by moving their urban format to the biggest signal they had. It was about the money, but ended up being the wrong decision.

And there it is!

Hahahahahaha...no you don't. You can be mediocre in the ratings, but if you bill well, you're not going anywhere.

Also, do you look at just 12+ or specific demos? Gonna bet off the former.

In 2000 the Philadelphia market was billing $350,000,000 a year. Today it is $225,000,000. That is a reduction nearly 40% in market revenue.

In 2000, 100.3 billed just about $8 million, and was 15th in billings . Today it does $5 million. Indexed against the market, it is at or a bit above parity level.

Radio One (its name at the time) was looking for an under-performing station to convert to one of their core formats. They were not looking to do a general market format of any kind. They bought a weaker performer that was stagnant in the ratings and had difficulty monetizing its format (just as WRFF does today).

1. The station makes money.
2. There are no other money-making format options for the station today.
3. Nobody is going to buy 1210 for what it is worth as a cash-flower.
4. Selling it might end up creating competition for KYW or WIP.

As to ratings, I remember when I owned a cluster of 9 stations in a million-plus population market. My most profitable station was the lowest rated overall. But it reached listeners that many clients wanted to talk to, so it made loads of money... ratings be damned.

Get rid of Urban and get rid of the talk format on WPHT. Where have I heard these ideas over and over and over again before? LOL. I want to say "As long as they're making money and serving their intended target, nothing needs to change" but I see that it's already been said in this thread (and about ninety-seven million times in other threads). {rolls over, goes back to sleep}

Everyone wants to be able to tell other people what to do with their money. My view is if they own the station, they can do anything they want, including run golf and checkers matches all day long. It's their money. They get to do whatever they want.

On to my on-topic comments :)

  • WOGL, now up to a 7.0, seems to have found what they're looking for.
  • BEN is higher than it's been in recent memory.
  • WRNB continues sliding.
  • WISX and WTDY both abandoned mass appeal formats for more targeted niches but when the dust settled, did the numbers change much? I'll bet the number$ did.
