It's interesting how WHYY had Zoom on in the morning, but not the afternoon. I thought they always put the older kids' shows on in the afternoon.

The Sugar Bowl was on ABC, pre-empted by WPVI for the Mummers parade (which must be a REALLY big deal). I wonder if KYW had planned to pick up the game all along or if they added it to the schedule once they realized it would be for the national championship. The Orange Bowl was the first, and to my knowledge, the only time that teams from the same conference (then called the Big 8) met in a major bowl game.

I was in 12th grade and living in Boothwyn, PA at the time. I watched that Sugar Bowl and (correct me if I need it) and that was the day 'Bama stopped PSU on the 6 inch line on 4th and goal. UA won 14-7 IIRC. Then USC won the Rose Bowl and split the national title with the Crimson Tide.

One thing I recall from this oddity of an ABC broadcast on an NBC affiliate: Whenever, during that Sugar Bowl, ABC showed a promo for an upcoming show, KYW, instead of quickly "covering up" the ABC promo, would show at the bottom of the screen the words "Not shown on KYW-TV".

Nice pun involving that emoticon, Buddy. ;)

A gold star goes to Buddy Hayes, who correctly guessed the oddity first - KYW, an NBC affiliate, was airing the Sugar Bowl, which was an ABC telecast.

ClassicTVFan - I will put on 17, 29, and 48's shows for 1/1/79 within the next couple days for you.

Ixnay - See, this is why I love the internet - people who actually remember it occuring and can clue me in. I wondered how KYW handled an ABC broadcast (and of course, in 1979, we were quite a bit away from seeing screen bugs). "Not seen on KYW-TV". Classic.

Thanks, harrisburg. Merry Christmas. :)

I wonder if that Sugar Bowl would have been cleared at all in Philly (at least on a VHF) if it wasn't a game involving Penn State with the national championship in its sights. Maybe if that weren't the situation, that ball might have been lateralled to 17, 29 or 48. I remember the 1977 Sugar Bowl (also preempted by WPVI for the Mummers, and yes, it is a very big institution in Philadelphia) being cleared on WKBS-48. Tony Dorsett, Matt Cavanaugh and the Pitt Panthers beat IIRC Georgia for the national title in that Sugar Bowl.

Out of curiosity, how would WKBS treat network promos?

In a top-5 market! Don't forget that KYW was part of Group W [Westinghouse] and WPVI was owned by Capital Cities Communications.

Coincidentally, Group W owned an ABC affiliate just down the road in Baltimore.

Good question. I only watched a minute or two of THAT game (I joined my mom at friends of hers who were not big football fans). In fact I was only aware that WKBS was airing the game through the TV mag in the Philadelphia Sunday Bulletin, to which my mom subscribed at the time. I don't remember how or when I found out the result but the Sports Confiscated (as my dad used to call SI, playfully :)) cover still sticks out in my mind. PITT IS IT! shouted the cover, which showed TD leaping into a teammate's arms.
