Re: Philly DJ's « Reply #3 on: Today at 12:15:53 am » Quote Modify --------------------------------------------------------------------------------I met Ron years ago, probably in the mid-70s. Ron was a guy with a great work ethic and passion for radio, but he had a problem...ego. His ego wasn't vicious, but it was enough to keep him from improving his on-air abilities. RJ was competing at a time when Philly had some great sounding air talent. It was long before the corporations devalued good, creative talent as bottom-line problems. If Ron were in his 20s today, and seeking work, he could probably obtain an on-air job at a major station, because today's benchmark for talent is "mediocre". Ron could not get past the issue in the 70s of "getting good" on the air. He was into doing the record hop circuit like many others who couldn't grab a good gig in a good market. I think RJ felt doing hops and dances, and lots of them, would be his ticket to working at one of the majors at the time, like WFIL or WIBG, or WCAU-FM. Sadly, Ron was destined to work at little, peripheral stations around the Philly metro, meaningless in the scope of real Philadelphia Broadcasting. Yes RJ has been a hardworking record hop jock for years. Yes, he is known through that backdoor conduit of radio, but was he ever an important part of Philly radio? Never. I don't want to bring the guy down, but quite frankly, there are way too many "legit" unsung heroes of Philly radio to even consider for more than a second RJ's introduction into that group.By the way, in answer to the original post by Captain Happy, Joe Niagara was at quite a few stations in Philly. WIBG, WFIL, WIFI92, WCAU-AM, WCAU-FM, WPEN, WDAS. In relation to the years Niagara worked in radio, and the stations available at the time, I think this one example would qualify as a definite unsung hero. How does RJ compare to this resume? How could he even come close?

Re: Philadelphia's Unsung Radio Hero THE BIRD

I have to agree, The "Rockin' Bird" was the best. There was no other than Joseph Frederick Niagara III. No-one in radio, now or in the past, had his on-air personality. The guy was smooth and could be listened to for hours on end. He is the only jock I could of sat through, inbetween the music, in fact, he was better to listen to than the music he played. He is the true unsung hero of the business, bar none.

Not to take anything away from Ron, but I may have him beat by one station. Full or parttime, I have worked on 12 area stations, WAAT, WTTM, WIOQ, WPEN, WIFI, WDVR, WCAU-FM, WAMS, WFIL, WEGX and lastly WPGR.Joe Niagara wasn't an unsung hero. He was a regular hero, a legend, broadcasting deity

Also, I forgot to add two addional stations I've been on. They are in 1986 WPWT, and 1990 WPEB. That gives RJ a total of 14 call letters.

Didn't RJ claim to have been on 100 stations? :D Opps gotta go RJ's CB radio show is coming on.

By referring to himself as "I", I think the poster has slipped up and is, in reality, the same person he is talking about. What Do you think?

There's nothing wrong with brokering time, people like Jerry Blavat have done quite well buying and then reselling their airtime. But when you come to a public forum like this and say nice things about someone when you are that someone, I don't think you're acting in good faith, whether you are brokered or a full-time employee of a radio station.

Perhaps someone will call RJ during his brokered show on WNWR (Saturday, 3PM eastern) and ask him to clear this up. I'm sure he would be happy to shed some light on this.

If it turns out to be true, I, for one, will forgive him like the people forgave Jimmy Swaggart when his untruthfulness came to light.

Don't forget Hy Lit!

I listened to "Something to Say With RJ" today on WNWR. In my opinion, it was terrible. Here's why:

He was only live for half the show. For the rest of it he played clips from last week's show??? Then, he played disco music while his wife sang along. It's crap like this that killed the Al Alberts Show on TV and local radio in general.

When he tried to talk politics, he mispronounced Nancy Pelosi's name.

I understand now why people make fun of his guy. He called YouTube, "The You Tube." Kind of like when my great grandmother called our car "The Machine."

He talks about how bad Comcast is, the fact that they're a monopoly, and then I hear that his "show???" is carried on Comcast cable in San Francisco.

I became aware of this guy through the radio racket show which is promoted here sometimes. They are merciless to the guy, and now I know why. He apparently called them on-the-air and really laid into them some time ago. Last night they played clips of that and a Brady Bunch song about him that was really funny.

At least he makes for entertaining radio on other shows. And, by the looks of things, some very intereting posts on this mesage board.

So, you're the guy?

That would be "The Brokered Bunch" Music and lyrics by Steve Bryant (Something To Sing With SB Music-ASCAP).

When he tried to talk politics, he mispronounced Nancy Pelosi's name.

He also took credit for correctly predicting Ed Rendell would win re-election. Next week he'll predict dropping temperatures by the end of the year.

But that wasn't as funny as his "reporting" of the resignation of Donald "Rumsfield".
