Phillips joins McIntyre in the Morning starting Monday

Starting Monday, July 30th, JOHN PHILLIPS joins Doug & T-Rae weekday mornings from 5-9 AM on "McIntyre in the Morning with Terri-Rae Elmer and John Phillips"!

Just what they need ... ANOTHER voice! ::) An odd solution for a show that's already a traffic jam.

Exactly. Is management even listening to their own station, this show in particular?

Radio 101. Keep it simple and easy to listen to. This is taking a show that was too cluttered to begin with and adding MORE clutter. l like Doug and think he puts on a good show when left to his own devices, but the morning show is simply painful to listen to. This can't help.

It's a marked improvement to a faltering show, and it saves John Phillips' kabc gig from being completly axed since Geraldo's will soon be going syndi (i.e., taking over the "Fifth Hour with John Phillips").

Moreover, T-Rae needs to be replaced by a female news anchor that has a much minor role in the show (a la Shannon Ferrin to John & Ken) and paid much less. (Is her nasel voice & mumbling starting to grate on you like it is me!??).

Like WABC in NY, KABC is being programmed from Atlanta...the same experts who gave you Geraldo and Huckabee are in charge.

It is incredible! Amazing! Titanic squared! Could not believe they took the "McIntyre Mess in the Morning with Teri 'Talk Real Fast and Mumble Always' ELmer " and somehow, almost inexplicably, made a mess - and I mean a REAL mess (try listening to it, Cumulus execs!- of a disjointed show markedly worse by adding the ever-disastrous John Phillips to the "Mess" that is KABC not only mornings but 24/7. It is as if they want to make a disaster worse. Or that no one at Cumulus cares anymore. All I can say: Astounding!

I listened this morning for an hour and it seemed that Doug really made it a point to hog the air and made a clear statement to his fellow titanic member that he was clearly the boss and it was his show.

It is his show and I do understand that having to deal with an incompetent management that first takes him from his preferred night slot, then strips him of his beloved jazz bumpers, pairs him up with a person who cannot do a single newscast without messing it up and now adds a utter failed broadcaster to his already leaking vessel. No wonder he didn’t sound too happy.

But having said that I don’t understand why John Phillips puts up with this. First he is given a three hour show and then Geraldo comes on and his show is cut down to an hour and now he has to be added as third wheel on another failed KABC product. Why does he demean himself like this?.

After all I though proud conservatives believe in merits and performance and no special treatments. Why doesn’t he leave KABC and go back to something he can succeed at? Actually this goes for Mr. Ego Larry Elder too who is one reason KABC is in 33rd place. Why doesn’t he leave? I'm sure both of them are advocates of firing failed teachers or failed politicians?

They may be under contract, not to mention they may have a house payment, and all the other payments too. They may not have any other offer's coming they're way either. People gotta eat!

One can theorize that KABC put ever-awful Phillips on with the "McIntyre Mess in the Morning" because they owe him money on a contract and figured that they might just as well put him (the worst radio talk show person I have ever heard in my personal or professional life) on with Doug and "Fast/Mumbles" to see if he can bring up the ratings from 33 to 32. And, no, as another poster wrote earlier, Doug did not sound any too happy today, did he? And sounded less so when Phillips corrected Doug's name pronunciation of a guest coming on at 6:53. (This will happen a lot, as Doug weekly or more tells listeners he has trouble pronouncing names - Doug a veteran broadcaster.

Notice, btw, that they have guests on during the show at generally one time: 53 after the hour. If no guest, Doug rants and rambles about something from the paper or an article he wrote now regurgitated. The show is so cluttered and messed up. And you know (you can hear) they never prep for a show. Not beyond ten minutes before air ... maybe. Never take public calls - a story for another time.

As I have written before here, many, many people (like me) lament and are disturbed by the decline in live, local, take calls, hit the power guys in City Hall, etc. talk radio here and nationally. And I have also written that I do not wish to see local radio people laid off (aka: FIRED), as the economy is in a depression (yes, a DEPRESSION. I know, I run America's leading money recovery arbitration service for burned Main Street investors) and jobs very hard to come by. We see all the sad stories at securitiesarbitrationusa.com.

So many topics! So many hot shows to do! So much advertising to acquire! So many calls to take! So much outreach that the microphone and platform of talk radio provides. KABC: Stop Sleeping. If you guys are reading this in Atlanta, the people like me who grew up and got their starts in radio (mine with KLAC / KMET FM), we do not wish to see live, local, informed, involved talk radio disappear.

That said, the embarrassment that gives KABC, Cumulus, broadcasting and talk radio formatting, in particular, a bad name can be found weekday mornings on KABC. They have got to get out of the mess they are in. Can you imagine Heidi Harris on KRLA beating the Doug & Fast/Mumbles & Disgusting team on KABC? Can happen. Heck, I know a lot of people who can shake up KABC. And not retro programming. But new, alive, meaningful, cost effective, growth to profits all able to be done.

I feel I am (and others) writing for ears that cannot hear. Well, with respect to hard of hearing people, the way things are now mornings at KABC, not being able to hear well or putting in an extra supply of ear plugs may just be the only answer. It's frustrating.

To call even further attention to this disaster, they now use the ABC News sounder before T-Rae's newscasts which clearly highlights the difference between her delivery and the network pros. Then, having John Phillips lead off some of the segments makes it even less clear whose show it actually is.

Doug McIntyre's Red Eye Radio was such a great show ... it's sad to see it come to this.

Actually with enough time (fewer commercials and no, we don't need traffic updates six times an hour), Phillips could help the show. McIntyre is a good monologist but he's even better in coversation. He's been held back by Terri-Rae Elmer, who is more than fine for reading straight news updates, but who is not that entertaining, witty or informed to listen to in topical conversation (listen to how much better Shanon Ferrin is doing in TR's old role on the John and Ken show--she's smart and funny). Phillips will give McIntyre someone to riff off of and hearken back to his previous morning show, (where Phillips was the "Sports Princess") which may not have gotten the ratings but was actually a better show. More talk, less crap. It was odd to hear Phillips lead from the breaks a few times though, if they're going to make them co-hosts, then do so. Otherwise he makes a great sidekick. And I thik his presence will help Elmer, who is likeable enough when she is reacting to "the boys." I still marvel at how KABC management has botched this show..basically admitting they were wrong to fire McIntyre before, go nab him from Red Eye and then say "Doug, you've got a great show here and we'd like to bring you back to mornings and replicate it. But that jazz music, extended conversations with listeners or guests, staying on topic for more than four minutes, we'd like you to knock all that off." Has anyone else noticed since they killed his signature jazz he won't let the rock themes go for more than a nanosecond before he jumps in? Anyway, I'm optimistic Phillips will help.

This just runs out everyone's contact, KABC will become the outlet for CBS/Cumulis new sports network programed by Jack Silver. No other owned station is available in LA, It will be Cheap, Cheap, with no Larry, no Levin, no Jerry Revira, no twin nightime hacks selling truck oil in LA, and no Rush wantabe Hannity. As the Promo says " the Historic, no, no the Has Been, no, no, the, well you know". Bye Bye to everyone, Hello number 20.

I did not write what you quoted, just for the record. Maybe when the moderator removed what I actually posted it messed up your quote attribution?

You're right ... the quote should have been attributed to westfiled60. Not sure how that happened, sorry!

... and it has been, in my view, awful. "Mumbles Quickly" T-Rae is reduced to her off-mike coughing attacks clearly heard. John Phillips and primary host Doug McIntrye clearly not working in concert, so to speak, and Doug talks down to Phillips, undercuts him and comes up with unnecessary snide little remarks clearly intended for Phillips isn't working well. To say the least. (This noticed by this poster who thinks Phillips is the worst talk show person he has ever heard)(trying to be fair).

So, the addition of John Phillips to the so-called show has not gone well. Indeed, it has gone worse than I would have expected.

This does not make me unhappy. Maybe now, finally, KABC will can the group of them and get a morning show that takes calls, serves Los Angeles, has a smooth programming continuity that listeners can count on, will cut the number of traffic reports per hour, and on and on.

It is not particularly hard to build a good, solid talk radio show from a layout, programming view. It is hard to obtain a sustaining audience, to build an advertiser base that really wants to be on a show or station. To the latter, why in the world would any advertiser want to spend (waste) a dime on KABC morning mess?

I really don't know why John Phillips hangs around that disaster. As others have pointed out he clearly is being picked upon by Dougie and you can imagine how he must feel after being demoted and demoted and demoted again. Even the 16 year old kid hired at the KABC gate probably can't look at him directly without feeling sympathy.

I think he should hang it up and go back to his GLEE career.
