Philly 950 Chime Time...

Does anyone think a full-service Lifestyle Talk ("Fluff Talk") format, a la New Jersey 101.5, would work in Philly on...oh, I don't know...say, maybe...950 AM? I mean, if they offered personality-driven entertainment along with constant traffic & weather (and throw in a top-notch news operation--or at least strike a deal with a top-notch news operation), it'd probably be great.

You don't have to be stuck in a jam or bracing for a blizzard to listen for traffic & weather reports. Most of us tune in for these two staples constantly anyway, right? What would your rather listen to while waiting: Light, non-offensive, and local entertainment...or the same looping "twenty-two minutes" of news you've been hearing all damn day?

I think the time is right for a format like this in Philly. PPM's are gonna do some damage to KYW's TSL. Maybe they'll go in a news-talk direction to compensate? Someone should do it!

Yes, I believe it would work. But again, the demos would be mostly 55+ which is what WOR faced when they dumped Gambling from the morning.

But GM needs to be considering what their next move will be. The sports format is not going to work since they do not carry any major sports teams.

that would be a big hit in philly that would work and keep the oldies on the weekends with out info crap that would be the way to go becouse sports radio in philly is not that big but talk radio will not that crap wpht has all philly talk
 
A good NJ101.5 clone would cut it here. I'd also love to hear Paul Harvey News and Comment and his The Rest of The Story as well. Instead of the chime, use the note made by the Normandy Liberty Bell when it''s rung. That would be a real Philly sound! Radio Free Cheesesteak, anyone??

There's enough of that kind of drivel already on most of the alleged "music" stations with annoying jocks who think they are talk hosts. Info-tainment failed 15 years ago on WIP and all you have to do is turn on TV for an over-load.
No one will challenge KYW because it's too expensive to do news(even KYW mails it in with a skeleton news department compared to the "old days")

Until they are eventually driven out by voice-tracks..talk radio is still viable..especially sports talk. Check WFAN's billing in NY and WIP's. It has very little to do with sports teams broadcasts. And PLEASE..don't tell me it's IMUS. HE's as fried as burnt toast and isn't even getting numbers in New York anymore(let alone on syndication)..
Sports stations used to put him on because they didn't have entertaining morning talent. Imus has now been proven a tired failure.

All of you unemployed DJ's and small time bitter radio guys who post on these boards need to get into the current radio world.

OLDIES are OVER! No new formats make sense(except for the first book or 2 after another genius flip..Alice, Sunny..whatever!!)..and AM radio's future is either talk or infomercials..get over it.
 
Chime Time... fast or slow?

WPEN is about to flip to sports talk and here are people talking about what WPEN should do next! These ideas are either too late - or everybody is anticipating another flip this time next year.

'Cause hipsters don't know where the "AM" button is.

I like the NJ101.5-in-other-markets idea, but it has to be done on FM. Being on FM really reinforces that whole "We're not your father's Talk station" vibe they're going for. I can't name a single successful AM Hot Talker.

On the 950 signal especially, the format would go unnoticed, just as I think this new sports format will.

Totally with you on the NJ101.5 style idea...if someone does it right and promotes the heck out of it.

I'm not sure I buy the theory, to be honest with you. If it's marketed correctly (meaning age-appropriately), I think the right audience could find it. One might even point to 610 WIP as an example (since lately its format seems to be "Hot Talk that happens to be about sports").

Being on FM would certainly be helpful for such a format...but being on AM might bring down operating costs a bit maybe? (Not too sure about that one.)

Of course, we're still talking about Greater Media so the whole thing is a moot point since more than 50% of the station's success would rely on marketing.
