Although I love and listen to both stations..I must say that obviously 94.1 WIP has the edge on 97.5 because of the local aspect. WIP is legendary. I'm a big ESPN fan but in Philly...you want Philly sports. And thats what WIP is bringing you 24-7.
Mike Missanelli is what really keeps me on 97.5 in the afternoon though. He's the one thats really keeping The Fanatic going. I like Tony Bruno also but Mikey Miss is running things I believe. What does everyone else think? I think if you get those 2 over at WIP...97.5 is done. How much longer can they keep going anway?

97.5 now has both the Sixers & Flyers. When there is a conflict, the Sixers will be on 97.5 and the Flyers will be on 950 & 93.3.

Yeah thats true but when they aren't playing...its regular programming. Having those is without a doubt an advantage BUT it doesn't get ratings. Its the regular line-up.

Having the 4 major city teams split between the two stations will help both stay in business.

But for the Fanatic to really have a shot, they need a local morning show. I say push Mike & Mike and the entire ESPN lineup off to 950. That way, ESPN still has Philly covered.

I have a feeling that you have to carry Mike & Mike if you also want to carry things like the World Series. I wonder if ESPN will make an exception for AM/FM clusters. I also wonder if GM really cares about covering the World Series on 97.5 in years the Phillies aren't in it.

I've heard the same thing about mike and mike on espn stations. That you have to run them as part of the deal or they want you to on most stations. But I know in Baltimore, cbs owns 105.7fm which is mostly local sports but they also own 1300am which is 24-7 the espn feed. So 950 could do that and make 97.5 more local.

Does 105.7 run any ESPN programming at all? Because that's the point.

In any event, 1300 in Baltimore won't be an ESPN affiliate once the CBS Sports Radio Network launches in January.

I still find the WIP weekday lineup horrible. I've been a 97.5 convert for years now - I even suffered thru their early 950-only days mainly for Jody Mac.

Mikey Miss and Tony Bruno are great listens, imho. I also like Brian Baldinger. I also tune in for Darren Daulton's baseball show, and I enjoy the contributions from regular contributors Larry Bowa, Jayson Stark, and Sal Paolantonio.

I listen to Mike & Mike in the mornings because I enjoy listening to sports talk and the WIP morning show has been stale and horrible for years (imho). I would love a local morning sports show, but Mike & Mike has to do for now.

@Relayer: You might enjoy whatever morning show the new WIP-AM will be having next year via CBS Sports Radio. I'm hearing Boomer & Carton out of New York - no worse than Cataldi...

That's ridiculous. From whom are you "hearing" this?

At least Boomer and Carton will be on WIP-AM and not WIP-FM. That said, Cataldi and his morning clowns have to go. I stopped listening to them because that show has been stale and unlistenable for years.

Amen to THAT!

Seconded.

Is this the same Boomer & Carton show that airs on 660AM out of NYC? I listen to this occasionally, but I'm not a big fan of Craig Carton.

Cataldi isn't going anywhere until his contract runs out. I also like most of the local 97.5 lineup but don't like Bruno at all. It is like he is playing a character. I have to admit that John Marks and, even Sean Brace, have grown on me over time.

No reason why 2 stations can't make it long term. Eventually, 97.5 won't be part of ESPN anymore. Only then, will Mike and Mike not be the morning show. I like the show but concede the fact that local is better in the Philly market.

Honestly with the awful track record of 97.5 programming director, it wouldn't matter. 1/2 the guys on that payroll have no business being on a radio staion in a market as large as Philadelphia. Nothing personal just the facts.

Yes, that's the same Boomer and Carton which airs on WFAN New York. And the same Craig Carton who got into big trouble at both WIP (the Lindros fiasco) and at NJ 101.5 (I think he had insulted the wife of then NJ Interim Gov. Codey).

I tend to listen to WPEN-FM more than WIP-FM. I do listen to Dan Patrick and Jim Rome on WWTX 1290 in Wilmington. However, I do listen to the Phillies day games on WIP-FM as I can't get WDEL at work.

Cataldi is great. Love him or hate him...he's got a funny morning show and keep it local which is what gets the ratings in the city.

For over a year now, people have been calling for the demise of 97.5 as a sports talk station. IMO - they are here for the long run. They draw the exact type of audience that advertisers want. Yes, they draw less than IP but there expenses are much less as well.
