105.3-Dance-Jammin' 105.3
106.1-Classic Rock-106.1 Ben FM
107.9-Talk-107.9 The Patriot

This is a wish list, so here goes:

90.1 /107.7 (Wilmington) WRTI Jazz 24/7
90.9 WHYY-FM NPR news/info
92.5 WXTU country hits from 90's to today
94.1 WYSP Oldies 60-70's no disco - less emphasis on Motown/Soul, with the oh wow songs of the 50's (55-59).
95.7 WFLN Classical Music
96.5 WWDB Live and Local Talk as they used to do it, no syndicated shows.
97.9 WUSL US 1 format
98.1 WOGL Oldies as they now do it
100.3 MOR format that includes music from 60's-today
101.1 B 101
102.1 Station of the Stars al la the old WPEN
102.9 Classic Rock
106.1 Cool Jazz with more instrumentals less vocals.
106.9 WKDN dumps Family Radio, becomes Christian station that features Praise and Worship Music with solid Bible teaching pastors like Charles Stanley, Chuck Swindoll, Alistar Begg, etc., sort of like WDAC in Lancaster, but with more modern music.
The other remaining FM's in Philly can fight it out for the youth audience. I have no idea what they should format, this is my wish list.

Note that my last sentence said that the remaining FM's in Philly can fight it out for the youth audience, which would include each of those formats you mentioned. So my Philly FM dial wish list is not weak, those are included. Granted my wish list is as I'd want, because it represents the musical formats and talk formats I'd choose to listen to. I make a terrible demo, even if my age were younger, as I like most of the formats I listed (the only formats I listed that I wouldn't listen to are B-101 and WOGL's current format, plus those youth oriented formats that are so abundant on Philly radio today) thus making it MY wish list, yours lacks much music I included in my list. So from my perspective, your list is weak. Different strokes for different folks. Our perspectives are different.

I was wondering if anyone else would mention WKDN 106.9 since it did not appear on the original "wish-list". I agree that the Family Radio type programming is outdated, and there is probably a market void for the type Christain programming you mentioned. Also the Bible teachers you suggested are all very good, well known and well respected.

Although I believe your suggestion may work, I have a different idea for 106.9 that will fill an existing void and generate the type ratings and ad revenue a major market commercial class B FM should generate. Exactly what I have in mind will remain confidential for now. However I am acknowledging WKDN, with its present format, is, indeed, outdated and the 106.9 frequency is due for a complete overhaul.

Additionally, it may be a tough sell getting Charles Stanley and others away from the Philadelphia Salem stations considering the relationship Salem has established over the years with all the above mentioned Christian ministry program producers. Many of these program producers are on many, if not all, Salem Bible Teaching and Talk outlets in every Salem market.

It's long been speculated that Family Radio would deal 106.9 FM to CBS in exchange for one of their AM signals, probably 610. (Hey, the exact same thing happened in San Francisco years ago...)

That would be a smart thing for CBS to do and Family Radio gets money. Transmitters are not far from each other in Camden County. That would make WIP-FM on 106.9, KYW-FM on 94.1, Clear Channel talk on 106.1, and how about some sort of big band music back on 950 WPEN-AM? Don't know what CBS could do with 1060. KYW AM/FM simulcast with live sports on 1060 when conflict with WIP? 1210 MAS live 24/7.

For once in my life I am agreeing with country...Xcountry that is....I'll save some space on the board and simply "Second" Xcountrys list.

610 WPHT
950 ESPN 950 with John DeBella in the Morning
1060 KYW
1210 WIP (with the Phillies)

92.5 Country
93.3 Rock from 2000 to present
94.1 AC
95.7 Pop hits from 1984 to 1999 with an 80s CHR presentation
96.5 Pop hits from 2000 to present
97.5 Rock from the 80s with Preston & Steve in the Morning
98.1 Pop hits from 1964 to 1984
98.9 Current Hip Hop
100.3 Current Urban music without Hip Hop
101.1 AC
102.1 CHR
102.9 Rock from the 60s and 70s
103.9 Soft Rock (not AC but literally soft rock, like James Taylor)
104.5 Rock from the 90s
105.3 Urban AC
106.1 Rhythmic CHR with heavy gold and a dance lean
107.9 Classic Hip Hop

Aindik...so far I like your list the best...change your idea for 96.5 to mine all dance..(not POP remixes!! dance...) and I'm all in!!!

The problem with the Salem stations, WFIL 560 and WNTP 990 is they are hard to get, at least in Wilmington so I'm assuming a similar distance out to the North, West, and East also would have this issue as we do to the South. So I can't get to hear those great preachers from Salem. I can get Alistar Begg on 740 WVCH from Chester which has a solid signal into Wilmington as far south as Dover during the day parts. At night of course the Canadian 740 nostalgia music station overrides WVCH.

Obviously, someone is listening to Family Radio, as someone is financially supporting that station. One of the deceased preachers they still air Dr. Robert Cooke, from King's College was quite good (his tag line: Walk with the King and be a blessing today). At Christmas time, Family Radio does play some very nice Clasical Christian (Bach/Handel, choirs, etc) that is quite nice. The bigger problem, for me, is Harold Camping. He's on there so much and I just don't want to hear his preaching at all, so when he comes on, I change stations immediately. Having a WDAC type station in the Philly/Wilmington market would be great and Family Radio's 106.9 would fill the bill just nicely. I'm sure there are secular formats that would make more money, but in the Christian radio realm, money shouldn't be the first area of priority, reaching people for Christ should be #1, then the money. However, even Christian radio stations have to pay their bills so having those donations, etc, can make the difference of the station being able to fullfill its mission of reaching the lost or being sold for some secular purpose. color]

Yes it did, and involved the exact same frequencies as in Philly; CBS paid Family $95 million plus KFRC-AM 610 in exchange for KEAR-FM 106.9.

Considering that sale of Family Radio 106.9 happened in San Francisco, where there are probably far less people who would agree with and support Family Radio's type of Fundementalist Christianity, apparently made sense to Harold Camping, who I believe is the owner of Family Stations Inc.

As jmtillery has said, there has been speculation here for a couple of years about the same thing happening in the Philly market. The only reason I can see for Family Radio not selling 106.9 to CBS or anyone else is WKDN as a tri-state FM station reaching Eastern PA, Northern Delaware, Southern New Jersey, and even some of Eastern Maryland with a solid much coveted signal (as expressed by numerous folks here at RI), may be a cash cow for their ministry and a move to 610 AM (even though is a good signal for an AM station, but with far less reach of 106.9) would be a step backward and the lack of signal into many of those areas that 106.9 penetrates could cut into the audience that can be reached. Also the music, which is unique and generally not heard anywhere else on the radio dial, sounds far better on FM than on AM, which can be a drawing card to someone scanning the FM dial to stop and give a listen. Also Family Radio, just as any broadcaster knows, the future of broadcast radio is NOT on AM, but FM, so if he doesn't have to go to the lesser desired medium to pay bills, why do it?

So, MY GUESS IS, until WKDN becomes a drain on Family Radio, I wouldn't look for a sale of 106.9 Camden/Philadelphia to anyone. From time to time I do see some WKDN bumper stickers around, so someone is listening and probably financially supporting WKDN. Just as others listen to and support the other various religious radio stations, also college and other non-comm stations around the Philly/Wilmington/Trenton metro area. They may not pull in big ratings, but they are being used and do reach enough people to stay in business. Even though the "main stream" audience doesn't listen doesn't make what they air not worthy of being aired (I totally disagree with much of what Harold Camping says and change stations if he comes on, but do like much of the music and some of the other features they air so every once in a while I'll tune in when looking for a more traditional form of Christian music. - in the interest of full disclosure, I don't financially support Family Radio, because of Harold Camping's beliefs, but I support his "right to be wrong" and be on the air).

Speaking of WDKN, I just got back from taking a bike ride around the Historic section of New Castle, Delaware and Battery Park along the Delaware River, and passed a couple of weddings that were going on. At one wedding, someone from WKDN was there with the station's vehicle, I'm assuming as a guest. What a small world.

Just wondering why you would take Hip hop off 98.9 Power 99 where it's been forever and flip flop it with 102.1 that has been a CHR?

stronger signals for the Q. I've done this for all my Top 40s and Alternatives cuz they're my favorite formats. Especially when they're mixed together. And Country too that's my other favorite format
