I think Philly radio is a little better off right now than it's been for quite a while. I know everyone has complaints about this station and that station and everyone's always saying what a miserable job everyone's doing considering we're market #6. But, what exactly are we looking for?
We have WXPN, which a lot of markets would die for.
I have no issues with KYW. I think they do a great job blending news and feature stories while giving weather & traffic whenever I want it.
B101 is coming around again. I'm glad they're not competing with Sunny anymore. There never really was a need to...so it's nice to hear B101 returning to the modern-day AC sound that was so popular. They're once again playing one great song after the other. (It's hard to get me to say anything bad about an independently-owned & operated radio station anyway.)
WDAS-FM is a very good Urban AC. I don't know who could complain about it.
WRNB is an excellent Urban AC. Nice to see a station launch in Philly and be successful. I was starting to think we were just intolerant and would abort anything new that ever came along for the rest of time!
I don't know why people whine so much about WOGL. Oldies is what Oldies is, ya know? Yes, this one is customized a bit for this particular market but if it wasn't, I'll bet people would complain even more. I still hear enjoyable songs on WOGL. I think I concentrate on what it is, rather than what it isn't. Not to mention, when something objectionable comes on WOGL, I'll bet you can turn to Sunny 104.5 and find something pretty cool. You can switch between these two stations all day long and probably be pretty satisfied.
WYSP is a bit all over the place right now but I figure that'll settle down shortly. (Waiting to see if anyone's going to pick up the Modern Rock torch has certainly made things interesting.)
For country, we have WXTU. For Smooth Jazz, we have WJJZ. For Gospel, we have WPPZ.
You like the Urban? Take your pick: You have Wired, Power, and The Beat, each offering a unique spin on the format. One sounds great, another sounds okay, and the third is holding its own. The music is popular right now and we are in Philadelphia. They're just giving the people what they want.
Q102 is pretty much playing straight-up Top 40 and spinning some interesting Gold lately.
For Classic Rock... Well, we have WMGK but who am I kidding? For Classic Rock, go with The Hawk. It may not be ours but at least we can hear it!
And I suppose it's kinda fun having that experiMENTAL station at 95.7 FM. Whatever "the next big thing" is inevitably turns up--and burns out--on that frequency. It's fun to observe if nothing else!
I like having Classical and Jazz on WRTI but I would like to see each format get its own dedicated 24-hour station.
Of course, my one complaint right now is the lack of Modern Rock. It doesn't have to be on a 50,000-watt stick since it's clearly not making much money right now...but it would be nice to have it somewhere on the dial.
Other than that, what's the problem?
