Philly Radio: It's not THAT bad

I think Philly radio is a little better off right now than it's been for quite a while. I know everyone has complaints about this station and that station and everyone's always saying what a miserable job everyone's doing considering we're market #6. But, what exactly are we looking for?

We have WXPN, which a lot of markets would die for.

I have no issues with KYW. I think they do a great job blending news and feature stories while giving weather & traffic whenever I want it.

B101 is coming around again. I'm glad they're not competing with Sunny anymore. There never really was a need to...so it's nice to hear B101 returning to the modern-day AC sound that was so popular. They're once again playing one great song after the other. (It's hard to get me to say anything bad about an independently-owned & operated radio station anyway.)

WDAS-FM is a very good Urban AC. I don't know who could complain about it.

WRNB is an excellent Urban AC. Nice to see a station launch in Philly and be successful. I was starting to think we were just intolerant and would abort anything new that ever came along for the rest of time!

I don't know why people whine so much about WOGL. Oldies is what Oldies is, ya know? Yes, this one is customized a bit for this particular market but if it wasn't, I'll bet people would complain even more. I still hear enjoyable songs on WOGL. I think I concentrate on what it is, rather than what it isn't. Not to mention, when something objectionable comes on WOGL, I'll bet you can turn to Sunny 104.5 and find something pretty cool. You can switch between these two stations all day long and probably be pretty satisfied.

WYSP is a bit all over the place right now but I figure that'll settle down shortly. (Waiting to see if anyone's going to pick up the Modern Rock torch has certainly made things interesting.)

For country, we have WXTU. For Smooth Jazz, we have WJJZ. For Gospel, we have WPPZ.

You like the Urban? Take your pick: You have Wired, Power, and The Beat, each offering a unique spin on the format. One sounds great, another sounds okay, and the third is holding its own. The music is popular right now and we are in Philadelphia. They're just giving the people what they want.

Q102 is pretty much playing straight-up Top 40 and spinning some interesting Gold lately.

For Classic Rock... Well, we have WMGK but who am I kidding? For Classic Rock, go with The Hawk. It may not be ours but at least we can hear it!

And I suppose it's kinda fun having that experiMENTAL station at 95.7 FM. Whatever "the next big thing" is inevitably turns up--and burns out--on that frequency. It's fun to observe if nothing else!

I like having Classical and Jazz on WRTI but I would like to see each format get its own dedicated 24-hour station.

Of course, my one complaint right now is the lack of Modern Rock. It doesn't have to be on a 50,000-watt stick since it's clearly not making much money right now...but it would be nice to have it somewhere on the dial.

Other than that, what's the problem?

Re: Philly Radio: Pretty Good

There is finally VARIETY on the Philly airwaves.

About the only things missing are:
-Classical (full time)
-Spanish CHR (on a full signal)
-Spanish AC
-Dance

Everything else is being done.

Country is being done on WXTU
Rock is being done on WXPN, WMMR & WYSP
Hot AC is being done on WBEN
Top40/CHR is being done on WPST, WSTW & WIOQ
Oldies is being done on WPEN & WOGL
Adult Contemporary/Soft Rock is being done on WBEB, WJBR & WSNI
Urban AC is being done on WRNB & WDAS
Hip Hop/Rap is being done on WUSL, WRDW & WPHI
Gospel is being done on WPPZ
Classic Rock is being done on WTHK & WMGK
Sports is being done on WIP & WPHY
News is being done on KYW

While some of the formats can be better executed then they currently are, the Philly radio dial is NOT bad AT ALL.

It is better here than the disaster in New York.

Classical music on 96.3 WQXR
Hot AC on 95.5 WPLJ (Except they are leaning towards Variety Hits)
97.1 is hip hop and r+b. I think.
97.9 is Spanish
93.1 is Spanish
92.3 is leaning more towards classic rock
Q1043 is classic rock
101.1 Jack FM of course is Variety Hits
101.9 WQCD is smooth jazz/chill
Mix 1027 is dance
1035 KTU is dance
105.1 is hip hop (I think)
105.9 is Spanish
106.7 Lite FM is AC but is sounding real Hot AC
770 WABC is News/Talk
93.9 is public radio
880 WCBS is news
1010 Wins is news
930 WPAT is Spanish
1130 is bloomberg/news
1050 is ESPN Sports Radio
660 WFAN is sports radio
1560 is radio disney
1600 is talk

No oldies, no modern rock, no country, or no true AC.

Philly/New York

When I vacationed in King of Prussia, PA 2 years ago I enjoyed 103.9 The Beat (now 100.3 The beat), Power 99, and DAS-FM. Wired did not exisit back then. I also enjoyed the CCM that was on 990 AM. That's another format Philly needs. CCM. That just goes to show you I have a wide variety in musical tastes. I also liked the standards format that used to be on Delawares 1290 AM.

As for NYC when I last visited last November there I wasn't too impressed with any of the stations there. Maybe I've lived in the Hartford Market too long, but I actually like HOT 93.7 in Hartford better than HOT 97 in NYC. Since 1997 3 of my favorite NYC stations have flipped. I used to enjoy Classic Rock 102.7 WNEW. I used to enjoy Jammin Oldies 105.1 and I used to enjoy the all Caribbean format on 1190 AM.

As for your list 93.1, 97.9, and 105.9 are Spanish stations, but they are all very different. 93.1 is Spanish which plays softer and older music. 97.9 plays alot of the Spanish Hit Music. And 105.9 which just flipped formats is Spanish Rap. (Regaeeton). They call it HURBAN. <P ID="signature">______________

Re: Philly Radio: Pretty Good

It's true, Philly radio isn't that bad right now. If traditional Jazz and Classical were full-time formats, it would be even better. And I really wish there was a full-time Standards format again - perhaps on a non-comm FM? The only two stations that really frustrate me are 95.7 and 1210.

We have CCM options with 97.1 "Reach FM" translator (WXHL/W246AQ) just over the ben franklin bridge but once you leave the center city / south philly area you lose it in a breeze.

We also have 99.1 "Star FM" receivable basically anywhere north or Doylestown all the way into eastern NY state (I imagine you've at least heard it when out on the road). But I would like it if Philly would have a full coverage CCM station like DC has. Seems if the format would succeed anywhere it would be in Phila!

Re: Philly/New York

There's another translator of WXHL, 103.5, W278AQ. Comes in well in Delco.
