Philly TV News

Spent a couple days in King of Prussia. Went to the Mall, Went to the Audubon Ale House to see George Brusstar's Trivia Show, and was an in-studio Guest on The Radio Racket.

Anyways my favorite newscast was 6 ABC's Action News. My second favorite was KYW's Eyewitness News, and my third favorite was FOX 29's News. I can't give an opinion on Channel 10s News as the reception of Channel 10 at the hotel was so blury it hurt my eyes.

By the way, Wake Up News on Philly 57 The CW was the most ameturish newscast i have even seen, which surprised me considering they're co-owned by KYW. The guy anchoring Wake Up News couldn't have been more than my age. (I'm 25). He could've been younger.

By the way you can read about my misadventures in King of Prussia by reading my blog: http://www.writing.com/main/books/entry_id/522984

ABC 6's Action News cannot reach the full zenith of its humor whilst viewed in a non inebriated state. One must be at Grimsby levels of drunkenness to make the viewing experience even remotely tolerable.

The best station I have found for news down there is the Fox station which is actually watchable. It isn't Chuck and Sue at 11, but it is way better than the rest.

Shame you missed out on WFMZ, they in my opinion have the best newscast in Philadelphia.

I'm familair with WFMZ from my stays in Bethlehem in 2004 and 2005 for Writing Conventions. The Holiday Inn Express I stayed at in KoP didn't carry WFMZ on it. It also didn't carry ION, ABC Family, Disney, or Lifetime, which are channels I frequently watch. The hotel also used Dish Network as their provider rather than comcast, so I wouldn't be able to get the regular Comcast Cable if I had pluged a VCR or a DVD player with a tuner into the cable.

Yes, its a good newscast - but aimed at Berks County and the Lehigh Valley. Although technically in the PHL market, WFMZ's newscasts should not be considered to be "Philadelphia" newscasts...they don't really serve that area. But, they do a fine job with their target areas and should be commended for that.

To me (as a newcomer to the area), NBC-10 has the best newscast in Philadelphia. By far, the most professional and straightforward coverage in the market - IMO. Also, the only really good meteorologist in the market seems to be Glenn Schwartz - despite the nerdy bow tie. Having Renee Chenault-Fattah as anchor does make me question their ethics; then again, most media outlets are biased in one way or another. They do seem to play it pretty straight overall, so I am willing to overlook that glitch. In summary, it's not that 10 does such a spectacular job, but it is better than the others (see below).

The 1970's style of 'Action News' put my wife off immediately and wore off on me within about two weeks of living here. initially, I found it amusing because I recall when that kind of stuff was en vogue - but the novelty faded pretty quickly. Despite some good reporters, the style is just too heavy handed and the *duh-dah-dah, duh-dah-dah* music is blasted at you before and after every break. Didn't they even do weather on a magnetic board and use grease pens until, like 2001? It's all just too much. In general, we find that channel's news unwatchable. I know it's the most popular newscast in the market, but my conclusion on that is that local viewers probably don't know any better. They should drop their old habits and turn to 10.

CBS-3 suffers from the same maladies that other CBS O&O's seem to have: lackluster anchors, dull presentation, dull graphics, and not-so-compelling lead-ins. It's reminiscent of WBZ's newscasts in Boston, only not as good of a newscast as 'BZ offers (in a more competitive market, I might add). And, who's the housewife doing weather? Yeeech! As a parting cheap shot, Alicia Lane has simply lost too much weight. Last year, she looked foxy - now she just looks skeletal. As she was about the only reason to watch, CBS-3 gets no attention from me anymore.

I do not find Fox 29's news to be very good. The morning newscast is their best, which is faint praise indeed. The anchors are forgettable and the traffic gal is reminiscent of a bar maid that you'd find in a watering hole in NE Philly! The 10 o'clock news is not compelling either. After years of watching 10 pm newscasts on Fox affiliates elsewhere, we either check on the channel 10 newscast on My17 or wait until 11. As a whole, Fox 29's coverage is very superficial (more so than the 'average' Fox O & O) and they base newscasts on personalities that I don't find interesting. They certainly do not hold a candle to Fox affiliates in NY, Washington or Boston - or any other top 10 TV market.

As for "WakeUp News" on CW57 - it's so bad that it's almost good. Kind of like that blonde weather gal on that show - really ugly at first, yet I can't look away. Quite peculiar! ;D

CW-57 - why not this instead of Wake up news?

Why doesn't CBS-3 just do another 2 hours of news from 7AM-9AM on CW-57? It could be "CBS 3 Eyewitness News on CW-57". WTNH the LIN-TV owned ABC station in New Haven, Connecticut does that. On WTNH they have their morning news "Good Morning Connecticut" on WTNH (which is known on-air as News Channel 8) 5AM-7AM. Then they do an additonal hour 7AM-8AM on sister station "MY TV 9", which is WCTX/59. They brand that as "Good Morning Connecticut on MY TV 9". In addition NewsChannel 8 does a 35 minutes newscast on MY TV 9 at 10PM daily.

Simple -- CBS doesn't want its O&Os to compete against "The Early Show", which they're imporing its affils to show the whole two hours.

For Christmas this is what they did with CBS 3 taking over at 7am

Wow, I think you're the first person to use "best newscast" and "NBC 10" in the same sentence - ever!

Lots of people call it "Tabloid 10" for a reason.

Ummm, compared with the other crap on the TV dial down here - it is. And, name a better meteorologist in this market than Schwartz. At least he knows what he's talking about - on a technical level. None of the other main weather anchors seem to. Cecly Tynan on 6 was eye candy (no more) and did not inspire confidence. The woman on 3 seems like she hopped out of a minivan full of groceries. And Fox 29's weather coverage is a joke. So yes, Schwartz is the best by default.

As for the overall news, WPVI is #1 in the market? It is a freakin' throwback! A formula that would NEVER work anywhere else. Then again, you guys all like the Eagles too! LOL! ::)

Tis true he could be considered the best of the main weather anchors I guess...I am not a fan of any of them. Never liked Tynan (agree with you comment) and as for Kathy Orr (in addition to as you say, looking as if she just jumped out of a minivan full of groceries) her accent seems weird. Fox…Fox…do they have news or is it merely a shill for American Idol. Likely it is just me but I don’t like Schwartz’s delivery. He always seems flustered and confused, to me. Plus I think he over hypes the possibly of bad weather more than some. To tell the truth, I get my weather from the NWS and Weather Underground. In fact I am not sure why I watch the news at all. It must just be a habit since I can get the same and more info on the web, at my own convenience vs. watching it on TV. But if I had to pick one (not necessarily one of the main weather anchors) I would go with Adam Joseph. Decent delivery, appears to actually know and understand the weather and when I watch, does not seem to over hype bad weather. Some one mentioned WFMZ. I live in NW Chester County and get 69 via Direct TV. I happen to like Ed Hanna. Comes off as a likable guy who knows his weather and it at least seems as if he was putting together a forecast not just reading what the NWS posted on the web. (Note these are just my opinions and not meant to be mean. I am sure these weather people are all nice folks. I say this since the posts on this and other sites like this one can get quite mean spirited at times.)

- KYW's Tom Lamaine
- WTXF's Rob Guarino -- Heck, I'm all for pretty much everyone else at the weather dept over at 4th and Market. Sue Serio is actually mostly spot on and competent for the mornings and I'm all the more grateful for that.

Meh...it's watchable...but then again, I'm watching the Newshour on PBS more often these days anyway...

Yes, I have to agree with most of what you have to say. Also, my endorsement of Schwartz does not necessarily mean that I think he is smooth - he is not. But, he seems to be the most credible of the big 4 prime time weather folks in this market. And, that is not really a great achievement because none of them are all that great. For a top 10 market, most of the newscasts that I see in this market are pretty disappointing. They do not contrast well with what you would see in markets such as Dallas/Ft. Worth, Boston or San Francisco - all of which have newscasts that outclass anything here....and all of which are smaller markets.

The first time I saw Messer Schwartz, bowtie and all, I voted him most likely to be beaten-up for his lunch money. With that said, he's a damn good scientist, and knows his craft.

Tom Lamaine has been a sentimental favorite since his WOND days, and knows shore weather well. Great informer when coastal weather gets rough. Mrs. Orr is also knowledgable, but maybe too perky.

WPVI's Tynan is affable, and Ch 6's 9th grade graphics are easy to understand. Hell, everyone at Ch 6 is "nice guy" friendly. That's why they're #1.

With deffernce to Mr Mendte at Ch3, he's no Vince Leonard. Bring back Ken Matz.

Vince Leonard? Ken Matz? While we are reaching into the stone age, how about that Bill Kuster?

Let's go waaaaaay back. Gunner Back and Dr. Francis Davis, both Channel 6 Alumni.

Ken Matz was at Channel 10 in the 90s. Last I heard, he's retired and lives in Florida.

I have to agree about NBC being the best. It's pretty much the only one I watch. Also, in the mornings, Bill Henley is on for weather, and he seems to do a good job. On Dave Warren's first day, though, it seemed like too many people called in sick and they picked up some random guy off the street to do weather. He doesn't seem to have a TV personality. Schwartz is pretty good for weather, but he's not a nice guy in person (I know people that have met him, and said he isn't how he appears on TV).

ABC's broadcast gets annoying, I must agree. It does seem old fashioned.

CW's is definitely very amateur. I love to watch how bad it is. And I have to agree with the previous comment about the weather woman. She's the kind of person that, if you passed by on the street, you would keep staring at, because she just looks different in some way. Her mouth is also very large in size.
