PHOENIX ARBITRON RATINGS RELEASED: HOLIDAY 2010

Some surprises here to say the least. KTAR-FM barely edged out KFYI with a 3.5 AQH percent compared to KFYI's 3.4. This has definitely not happened in a long time! Also, curious to see KZON at #2 and not MIX 96.9. I think, though, that a lot of KMXP's listeners defected to the all Christmas music on KEZ and next month MIX should be back on top of the ratings. Props, though, to KZON for coming in second.

I'm a little surprised too to see the downward slide of KOOL. The AQH percent has slid from 5.2 in November to 4.4 for the Holidays. KSLX came close to overtaking KOOL during the Holiday period, which would have been some big news. I now the Doc and oldiesfan wouldn't like this, but maybe a KOOL Christmas would have been a good idea this year after-all! ;D

No surprise to me at all. KOOL dumped their once successful morning show and has followed that up by introducing 80's junk music into their traditional Oldies. Old time listeners like me have now dumped KOOL for MP3 players. The slide will continue. Another "KOOL Kristmas" may have provided temporary ratings relief or it may have cratered the station for good.

KSLX has remained faithful to their format and that's why they have not experienced the "KOOL slide".

I'm also thinking you'll see another slider when KYOT's new format hits the next book.

I swear Phoenix Market must be my "home".

Every sound / style I have a good feel for here is always eventually successful, or at least tried here. I'm glad my top two stations I've always made the most hoopla about are finally the leaders in ratings, against their direct competitors, when it comes to their format sound and style - KTAR and KZON. Other stations that I "obsess about" every now and then, like the pop rock lean top 40 KMVA, or KPKX with the current KBIG style sound...etc., I never expected to actually top the charts, but I always knew they could at least maintain acceptably decent ratings. As far as a dance lean chr, I also believe that this style can hold (at least) acceptable ratings here, but probably not with all the electro-pop friendly chr's we already currently have flooding the valley, that would eat away listeners from any potential new station that came in with an (at first seemingly) identical sound.

Despite my past ramblings these past many months about how great KTAR was and how they are even better than KFYI (IMO), I never actually thought they'd beat KFYI in ratings! However, I always believed in KZON, though. That one, over all, was always an absolute no brainer to me.

As a matter of fact, all KZON would really have to do is add Deadmau5 and Afrojack into regular rotation with what they currently have, and they could easily be considered a dance rhythmic (they already use those songs in certain mixes).

Anyway, although I have my feelings and opinions (which may or may not be the same) about KYOT, I'm going to hold back on making any KYOT predictions because... I really have no idea if their new style will help or hurt them. This one I simply just don't know. Have a spectacular day my friends.

You were wrong a long time ago and you're wrong now!

KOOL has done significantly better with their updated sound....Smartest move they could've made!

The AQH fluctuation is normal for that time of year!

KOOL is one of the better sounding stations in town and actually one of the better sounding Classic Hits stations in the U.S! They'll continue to do just fine....or better!

The only thing I remember saying "a long time ago" was that I was greatly disappointed in the downsizing of their morning show and more recently didn't like their new format.

I don't keep track of books so can't tell you exactly but my perception is that KOOL was once one of the leaders in Phoenix metro radio and has now slipped. Whether that is an anomaly or the beginning of something worse I don't know. But they are now off my radar (as is KYOT and for much the same reason).

It seems each year I am less and less impressed with Phoenix radio and am now down to KSLX as my one and only preset. And I continue praying that the Goldmine will one day move to FM with a metro area signal.

Here, here! I’m all for moving my favorite station, the Goldmine, to FM. A move to FM would also help add some personality to the station, like an actual live DJ every now and then. My only question, though, is where would it go? The most under-performing FM station for Sandusky is KDKB and even that isn’t worth blowing up at a 2.6 AQH. I always though KMVA would be a good spot for the Goldmine since it’s the rim shot with the best Phoenix area coverage and the station is constantly in disarray. We’ll see what effect the new HOT 97.5 format has on the ratings next month.

But, before we talk about moving the Goldmine to FM, I think Sandusky needs to start broadcasting the Goldmine at night on 1440. Or, at least give us constant Goldmine oldies via live streaming on their fancy new website. It would at least be a step in the right direction! 8)

I must correct myself; KPKX does not have the current KBIG sound. KBIG has now fully evolved and moved on to a "different sound", extremely similar to the current KMVA.

whats going on at cbs? kool and kmle in the toilet. while jamz has nice numbers- they are no different than 1 year ago. when the new gm took over, kool was 2nd 25-54. today? 14th. kmle? 16th.

how long before the 156,889th cbs gm is named...?

hmmmm KFYI sure has been a slide... just sayin ;-)
Karma's a bitch.

For someone who has "moved on" to a new, and presumably better gig, you sure are having a hard time letting go. Get over it dude. Oh and by the way, the holiday numbers are down across the board for everyone who ISN'T KEZ. They clean everyone's clock during the Christmas books. This year was an exceptional clock cleaning.

And the ultimate reality is that terrestrial radio is a dying industry, even for KEZ. The audience is abandoning terrestrial radio for smart-phone based solutions (e.g.- pandora, slacker, etc.), satellite radio, internet radio, ipods, etc. 5 or 10 years from now, I can't help but think FM radio will be the new AM radio--antiquated and irrelevant.

Right. Because those 6+ numbers tell the whole story. In fact, we're considering shutting the transmitter off. We concede.

...thanks for the pub though.

IMHO, KTAR is more focused on the Valley than is KFYI. You might have to deal with six hours of Dave Ramsey, but KTAR still has more local content than similar stations in bigger markets. The question going forward is will B'ville spin off their Phoenix cluster? And there's always the possibility of KFYI migrating to FM. :)

KTAR has been beating KFYI 25-54. It doesn't bode well for KFYI that KTAR has now eclipsed it overall. Based on its cume advantage, if KTAR had better TSL, it would be way out ahead of FYI.

Perhaps 95.5 KFYI will not be too far away. Assuming, of course, that Cheap Channel cares about remaining #1 for News/Talk in Phoenix.

A 3.5 to 4.2 range in 25-54 is hardly horrible. As was just mentioned, 12+ or, aaaaaaaarrrrrgggghhhh, 6+, is useless and that is why Arbitron gives that data away.

Talk radio ratings seem to be sliding in many markets, after the elections. KGO, long number one in SF is slowly declining. In Vegas, a small station, KDOX, dropped talk for oldies. KGIL in LA went to mostly music.

What has affected talk in a number of markets is the change from the diary survey method to PPM.

KGO has had 25-54 numbers within a fairly tight range since conversion to PPM in mid-1998.

KGIL is a highly limited signal, and KDOX is, for all practical effects, a daytimer.

Maybe it is time for CBS Radio Phoenix to consider an Urban AC on one of those sticks. At least on KMLE. Phoenix doesn't need TWO country stations!!! The city's demographics are changing and radio's landscape needs to change with it. Granted Urban AC in Phoenix would have to be tweaked, but I think it could work with the right promotion.
