Phoenix March ratings

How does Nielsen determine the metro Phoenix population? The 2020 census says Maricopa County's population was 4,420,568 at the time. Add at least half (the northern half; the other half is probably considered part of the Tucson media market) of Pinal County's 425,264, and that's over 4.6 million people. And that was 5 years ago!

What part of Maricopa County is outside of the Phoenix radio market? I wouldn't think any of it. Maybe Gila Bend? Wickenburg?

Niesen almost always uses total counties for radio Metro Survey Areas. In the case of Phoenix, it is and has been all of Maricopa County. Nielsen does not survey cities; it surveys counties. The few cases where counties are divided are based on either signal issues or extensive geography.

For example, there is a county in Connecticut that borders on the New York City market, and a portion of it commutes to New York. That part is in the New York Metro but the rest is part of the Bridgeport area and is segregated. Another example is Riverside County, CA; part is in the Riverside/San Bernardino market, another part is the separate Palm Springs Market and most is not in any market because the county is bigger than several Northeastern U.S. states.

Counties can be added or dropped from a Metro Survey Area because the ratings market is based on where the majority of listening emulates.

Note that Nielsen population data is for 6+ ´population in PPM markets and 12+ in diary markets. It is does not include the total population because portions under 6 or 12 years of age are not surveyed. Remember, the Phoenix ratings are for the Phoenix radio market, and that is persons 6+ and not all persons.

Population is determined by a combination of the U.S. Census projections (done by survey and not a real census) and independent market data providers who do estimates of the population across the United States.

It looks like all (or almost all) of the Spanish outlets have lost audience during this cycle. KZOM's entry into the market apparently drew only an estimated 13,000 listeners. KAZG's continuing slippage means that more sooner than later, we will be seeing them adding 80s cuts to the mix.
