KFYI fired Program Director Jason Wilmot today. Next Monday would have been his 18 month anniversary.

That's not funny at all. Jason built KFYI into a major talk station. He is the person who turned it into a station that finally got some ratings. Just because the sales team could never make any money off the ratings doesn't mean he should have been the one to get thrown out. The entire staff is pissd and will not let Cheap Channel get away with this stupid move. They've been ruining that station one stupid decision at a time over the last year. Morale has never been lower.

Barry Young was the program director of KFYI for quite some time--he didn't want to be the PD after awhile... it's a long story and one not worth rehashing right this moment, but he would do a pretty good job if he were the PD.

To my ears, KFYI fell flat after Chick Boss left--much the way one time leader KTAR became complacement and flat under the Master Blogger's predecessor (and wound up losing to KFYI). Plus, isn't KTAR beating KFYI 25-54 now??? That has to be a big concern. You automatically get 25-54s being on FM, but still...KFYI isn't nearly as aggressive, edgy or irreverent as it used to be.

Cheap Channel is not beholden to SLC like Bonneville is.

Of course, Clear Channel could always send down the PD from KNRS to fill the vacancy created at KFWHYEYE. The KNRS PD would finally have a chance to beat Bonneville in the ratings. ;D

Thanks for the Jerry Ryan reference.

I remember Jerry's "trail-hand" phase when he would send out memo's quoting some vague Western character and spend hours out in the parking lot practicing his roping skills by lassoing sales people who had the bad fortune of arriving or leaving while he was outside with his lariat.

If that Clear Channel deal on Wall Street goes caput, they might not have enough money to pay the light bill at KFYI, let alone a PD. KTAR can only hope.
