Phoenix Radio Songs That Make You Cringe

Even the best Phoenix radio stations have those pesky songs, the ones that stick around month after month after month, even though you can't conceive any purpose they can possibly serve for that particular station. This isn't meant to flame any station specifically, just a fun way to vent about the songs that truly make us cringe. This is all my uneducated opinion. I'm sure PDs can simply rebut with callout numbers, but like I said...all in fun.

Here's what we're NOT talking about:

(a) Currents or recent (say, a year old or less) recurrents.
(b) Songs that have justified spots on a station's playlist, but make you cringe because you simply have a personal dislike for them.

Here's what we ARE talking about:

(a) Songs that have stuck around ENTIRELY too long and have earned a prolonged rest period, or at least should move into a less prominent category.
(b) Songs that stick out like a sore thumb on a respective station (not a hit, doesn't fit the station's overall sound, etc.)
(c) Overplayed "classic" songs.
__________________________________________________________________________________

I think I'll go first:

Power 98.3 -

Back Then - Mike Jones (recurrent borderline old school- too much play)
TI ft Rihanna - Live your life (way too much play)
Jason Derulo - What'cha say (recurrent.. too much play)
Jamie Foxx - Blame it (recurrent.. too much play)
Pitbull - I know you want me (always seems to come on next if #2 or 4 aren't on when I tune in)
I would add "YC - Racks" if it were a bit older..

Eva 95.5 -

Outkast - The way you move (Always comes on whenever I briefly tune in)
Christina Aguilera - Genie in a bottle (seems to play a lot (or used to))

101.5 JAMZ -

Candy Man - Knockin Boots (Way old. The only other thing close on playlist is Sir Mix-A-Lot.)
Fergie - Big girls don't cry (Sounds very Mix 96.9ish now)
Britney Spears - Womanizer (It's ok, but... sometimes somewhat of a 'format buzz kill'.)
Trey Songz - Bottoms Up (On Too Much.)

I'm sure I'm missing a few, but that's all that comes to mind right now.

We've got it made in Phoenix.

Post this same question somewhere else, and BAM! Watch the pages of complaints and comments immediately start rolling in as if people were getting paid to critique!

Could it be that we either have better programmers or that the Phoenix market is easier to handle for a programmer? Or are we just more tolerant? Hmmm. Not sure.

"Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye. It's 2012's "Pumped Up Kicks." KWSS-LP is the only one playing it right now, but it'll be all over the dial pretty soon.

This was brought up in the LA section as well. Not once mentioned in the east coast, though. Must be a regional thing.

I surely hope this song hits big and influences pop artists & musicians to try more new and similar sounding styles. I notice it plays on Mix 96.9 a lot... As I mentioned in the CHR Mainstream Pop Section, I wonder how often hits actually blow up on a Hot AC first before crossing over to CHR. Regardless, I still hope it has a chance to cross over and grows to become a huge hit, along with "second chance" by Peter Björn and John (but this may be a stretch of wishful thinking).

Since someone decided to mention an overplayed commercial in one of my Boston posts, I'll add the plethora of back to back Valentine's Day commercials on KZON to the cringe list. Are all CBS stations doing this?

Well folks, the people of Boston have spoken.

1. Brown-Eyed Girl

4. All the Other Kids
5. You're Amazing Just the Way Your Are

Isn't "Brown Eyed Girl" considered the best-testing song of all time? I've heard it consistently puts smiles on focus-group faces, no matter how many times those people might have heard the song. AFAIK, it was never prominently featured in a movie (a la the perennially popular "Unchained Melody" and "Old Time Rock and Roll") and, of course, it got nowhere near No. 1 in its initial release. Whatever it's got, the song certainly seems to polarize radio geeks and average listeners like no other song out there.

"Brown Eyes Girl" is THE most overplayed song in history, I liked it the first million times I heard it, talk about a tune being burnt out. I really did used to like it too.

ha...

Oh, those Bostonfolk are such wicked pissas! ;)

I'm assuming by 'All the Other Kids' he/she means "Pumped Up Kicks?"
If you don't know the title of a song, maybe the stations aren't playing it too much? ;D

AFAIK, it was never prominently featured in a movie

"Brown Eyed Girl" was featured prominently in the Julia Roberts' movie, "Sleeping With The Enemy" and also in the movies "The Big Chill" and "Born On The Fourth of July."

and, of course, it got nowhere near No. 1 in its initial release.

It was #10 on the Billboard 100 when it came out.

But...it's okay, because I read once that not even Van Morrison likes this song, and thinks he has 300 songs that are better.

:D

Here's one: Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)" The Peak tries to sneak it in their rotation once a day. I believe Jamz does the same. The overrated performer's worst work, in my opinion.

Also, KDKB plays so much AC/DC, they should change their call letters to KC/DC! I think they're "Thunder" is being stolen by the return of Van Halen and the "Tattoo" song at this moment (pun intended).

I thought perhaps this Craigslist ad was so timely, with our spirited discussion about our all-time favorite song.
Dr. Akbar, this is SO you! Just grab an acoustic, and you and Nurse Jeff can split the $40...don't spend it all in one place! :D

Help me serende my wife 2/22/12 (Arizona Biltmore Resort)

My wife and I are spending a few days at the Arizona Biltmore from Tuesday 2/21 through Thursday morning 2/23. I'd like to sing the song 'Brown Eyed Girl' to her with you playing an acoustic guitar and he singing. My preference is Wednesday during the day or try to find some time later Wednesday or early Thursday morning. I'd like to sing to her at the resort. I'll pay $40 cash for your time. This is a surprise for her

We'll do it on the condition you drive Nurse Jeff and me home after the gig. It'll cost us at least $40 in gas to drive from the Buckeye Media Hut to the Biltmore. Too bad we won't see Snail Rail out here 'til long after we've gone horizontal

Call us nuts, but we crank up the volume every time Bang 545 plays. And that's a lot of crankin' every day!
