PHOENIX RADIO STORY

i'd like to hear your memorable moments of phoenix radio past.

i read somewhere about ktar's tower falling down from the top of the heard building in a storm. the engineers used a bow and arrow to shoot a wire across central to the adams hotel; to be used as temporary antenna for continued broadcasting. ...these are the kind of stories i'd like to hear about.

i remember in the late 80's, all the valley morning shows were on the air together, in real-time, talking to each other about a major charity event. ..that was a cool thing.

and then there was k-bruce. ..what a fun listen that was.

please share your short stories.

thanks.

I remember the on-air discussion about the charity event. In fact, I think there was another time when Bruce Kelly had Y95 iirc on the air with him discussing another event. Morning radio was FUN back in the late 80s.

And who can forget Hot Talk with Karla Foxxx running the station (into the ground). I remember Foxxx and Leykis having an on-air discussion about how sucessful hot talk would be and how Leykis would bring KFWhyEye to its knees. (Tom, I'm still waiting.) ;D

The 1989 Northern Calif earthquake relief show is what you're talking about. Bruce Kelly, once again, called all the valley stations live on air and put together a remote @ Collanade Mall with 20+ stations live raising money and goods for the Bay Area. KZZP flew in Donny Osmond,Taylor Dayne and Journey plus Rose Mofford, McCain.

Funny backstory as I remember-Y-95 was not invited and Gary Edens call Bruce himself and they ended up on the remote.

Two months later-BK mornings on Y-95.

Bruce called a radio station in Germany back in the 80s also. I wish I could remember the circumstances of the call, but I remember him saying, "Hi, I'm Bruce Kelly from K-Zed-Zed-P."

Oh, and I remember the day Madonna's "Like a Prayer" came out (or any other 'blockbuster' song), Power 92 was playing the song every frickin hour!!

iirc, both 92.3 & 104.7 wanted to be the first to play like a prayer, but they had to wait until a certain time. kzzp tricked power 92 by playing a snippet / promo for the song. ..when power thought they heard kzzp play it, their next song was like a prayer in full. kkfr got in trouble for the early play.

i remember the music directors going to ups / sky harbor to intercept packages containing new music, so they can rush it back to the station and get it on the air first.

those were the days... when kzzp had double digit numbers; for five years or so.

another bk moment..

bruce broadcasting live while floating down the salt river with marti in raft, broadcast to overhead plane and relayed to s mtn.

ok, there's gotta be other stories out there besides bruce kelly.?

Well there is a story more compelling than Ppppreston Westmoreland's "...guess the first 100 degree day" contest. Remember KNIX traffic guy Dick Leighton's classic weather forecast on Mc12? Was he overserved in the green room, or did Dick confuse English Leather with Canadian Club? Talk about a career ender!

I was one of two white guys who hosted "Arizona's Original Homeboys" on Power in the late 80's. Fred Weber thought because my partner Royce Blake and I were from Arizona - that made us homeboys. I think the show lasted all of a year... ::)

Back in the mid 70's some of the KRIZ crew snuck to Guadalupe and put KRIZ Balls on the KUPD trailer facing the freeway. That was a hoot.

And I remember sitting in the KRIZ parking lot the last day it was on the air in July of 1978. At midnight...sign off...Chuck Dean asked everyone to honk their horn in memory of KRIZ. It was kind of haunting to hear all the horns going off around the Buckeye Road area.

I wanna take a guess. If I remember right it was "Tonight's The Final Night" by Douglas Allen Davis. He was a local musician who was also the night guy on KRIZ when they came to their end. Chucker Dean was PD and he signed the station off the air. Correct me if I'm wrong on the last song. I know they played "Tonights The Final Night" several times their last week and in hot rotation the last day.

When I visit my family in the Valley several times a year I enjoy listening to Chuck, now Camelback Jack on KOOL FM.

what great radio stunt or promotion do you remember ?

I was at KDKB no more than a month when John Lennon died. We had a huge card draped across the side of the building to send well wishes to Yoko. Wow, seems like a couple yesterday's ago...27 years!

One of the lamest stunts I witnessed was when KDKB promoted like crazy that they were going to hide something (forgot what it was) and after hearing a clue listeners would try to find it and win a big prize. Well, the promotions guy takes the thing to hide and drives away from the station in the promotional van...with KDKB written all over it. Genius hides the thing and after the first clue is given the prize is won by the guy that watched him hide it. Can't remember what happened to Mr. Hi-IQ after that.
