Phoenix Stations you miss.....

I saw this type of thread on another board so I wanted to toss it out here. I have only been in Phoenix since June of 2000 but there are already stations/formats I miss that we have had in the past 11yrs or so. Be fun to see what everyone else misses.

Energy Arizona - Loved the oppurtunity to have a 100% dance station. I will always remember that day they signed on the air. I was in my car because I couldn't get the station in my lousy apartment LOL. I was so excited that I drove around for hours all over just to listen to Energy. I will always remember the day too when they signed off the air. I again was in my car and after "enjoy the silence" was over, I turned off the car and had my own moment of silence.

Zone 101.5 - I really liked this station when they were a mix of alternative and modern ac. Also at this time they had Stern mornings, Tracy Lee middays, Pratt afternoons, and Powell at night. Loved the personality driven alternative format.

Free FM - As I get older I find myself gravitating to more talk radio than in the past and loved that we had for a short time an alternative type talk station to listen to. Yes it was flawed from the beginning but I loved the Carolla, FHF, Colin Boyd, Leykis, O&D lineup.

KCAC 1010, KUPD 1060, KRIZ 1230, KRUX 1360, KGME 1360, KDKB 1510, KXTC 92.3, KBBC 98.7, KHEP-FM 101.5.

Don't care for the changes @ 95.5 Coyote. It's losing any jazz flavor it had, just pop now.

Speaking of 95.5, would anyone like to consider bring the smooth jazz format back to KYOT-FM?

Smooth Jazz is a dieing format that will only be heard on HD2 channels and Satellite going forward. It may be cheap to run but is not coming back to 95.5. I still firmly believe we have the new coyote sound just to prove to the "suits" that they tried something else and it didn't work so lets go forward with KFYI FM 95-5.

The zone, the edge, magic 106.9,power 92,kzzp in the 90'80's,kyot 95 and koy am in the 70's with bill haywood(not spelled right)

KTWC "Twice 103.5" -- and not just the vocal-MOR-lounge sound it normally carried, but especially the infamous month-long summer Christmas stunting.

KAMJ 1230 AM -- for the heavy pbp and intelligent sports-news and sports-talk format it ran when I moved here in '89 (and which continued for a couple of years before falling victim to a format switch to love songs).

KYOT 95.5 -- the blues/rhythm/"Americana"-based rocker of the early 1990s that fell too soon to the forces of Smooooooth Jazz .

  • 1060 KUKQ (both the "urban contemporary" era and the original '89-'92 "alternative" format)
  • 1100 KCCF (full-service soft-AC AM music radio after the format had long since died)
  • KHOT "Hot 105.9" (they might have had a limited playlist, but they were much more polished than Mega ever was or will be)
  • KGLQ "Eagle 96.9"

and, let's not forget..
  • 106.3 The Edge

Party Radio @103.9 kpty, I knew a lot of the on air guys, and they were really nice and because of a few of them, I almost had my foot in the door for radio. It was a one of kind station that I will always miss.

I miss Energy AZ 92.7/101.1, I didn't really like the format of music, or should say I didn't really know a lot about it, so that station and format opened me up to a whole new world of music. I would love for that format to come back to the valley.

The Edge 106.3
The Zone , more so from the middle to late 90's , that's when it was I think the best.

Variety 104.7 KVRY, I liked that format, I was young so what did I know :D
I miss the mix show's from KZZP era before it became KISS Fm, buts all I miss, well I miss all the mix shows when The Edge/ Party/ Zone did them.

I remember the Eagle, and all the other formats on 96.9.

I did listen K-lite

Not that I listen to it, but anyone remember the very short lived wild country 103.5, I believe it was call wild country .

I think that's about it.

KUKQ - Both alternative & R&B formats

KEYX 100.3 - Real interesting alternative & soul mixed together. Pioneers of the 80's. Miss this one the most.

103.9 the party station

OLd power 92 in 1992

Majic 106.9

95.5 smooth jazz - I can stand the new format, but I wish they would mix the smooth jazz with current R&B(Athony David, Maxwell, Jill Scott, etc).

From the time I've been in AZ:

Power 92 (early 90's and 95-97). I loved Planet Dance & the sweepers/voice-overs the station had in the early 90's, but I think the station sounded the best around '95 when it played a great balance of Rhythmic and Dance (where else could I hear Giovanni "Girl In My Eyes").

Y-95 - (around '92) When it was would toss in some alternative in the evenings (Cause & Effect, Consolidated, etc)

The Edge - (up until late 90's) During the time that Markus Schulz would mix Edge Factor

KZON - mid-late 90's (loved Mary McCann)

KZZP (2nd incarnation) - before it became KISS'd and then early KISS (when it would play Telepopmusik, Daniel Bedinfiield, Sonique, Amber etc.)

EARLY Mix 96.9

Energy Arizona

55/KOY 1986 and earlier with Bill Heywood, Al Vanik, Alan Chilcoat and a major-league news department.

KFYI 1985-86 with Charlie Van Dyke and Brad Messer in the morning.

KJZZ when it played jazz during the daytime.

Sunny 97 circa 1993 with Danny Davis, Alan Cook, Joel Grey, Steve Goddard and Greg "Third Degree" Burns.

Guy Zapolean's KZZP (when it really was the #1 hit music station)

In terms of "unique" stations, I miss the short-lived "Star 97.5." Just like the "Rhythm & Rock" KYOT, it was too niche to work, but was enjoyable at times.

KOPA 100.7 with "Crazy Dave" Otto in AM drive

KRDS AM 1190 circa 1985-86 - few listeners, but lotsa fun

55 KOY in the 70s

KDKB from the early 70s

92 Fire FM

KBBC 99 FM with W. Steven Martin in AM drive

Though I'm not a fan of country, any radio pro should miss the Owens' - era KNIX. Fantastic station.
