Phoenix's broadcast day on 09/11/01

Does anybody have airchecks from that day? Specifically wondering about KFYI and KTAR - I remember KTAR cut to network for most of the day, but I don't remember if KFYI did or not. And I don't remember if Morning Ritual w/ Chuck & Vince were on 103.9 at the time, though I do distinctly remember 103.9 playing some U2 song with 911 calls dubbed over the music.

I remember I heard about it on the radio driving to work, that everyone left work early, and that Metrocenter was closed so I couldn't go there.

Howard Stern was live on 9/11 on 106.3...I will never forget it in my entire life...my radio alarm clock went off and it's how I found out & ran to the TV...

I don't know when The Morning Ritual started on 103.9, put definitely not until after October 2001, when 106.3 moved to 103.9...on 9/11, 103.9 was still "Party Radio" Rhythmic Top 40.

I'm pretty sure Kid and Ruben were on Kiss at that point. I recall listening to them on the air way past 11.

I was in Prescott that morning and left to drive back down to the valley around 10 or so, a couple hours after both buildings fell. On the drive I remember hearing the Edge either re-running Howard or most likely just on his normal 3 hour delay and he was describing what he was seeing on TV. 3 hours after the fact I was listening to him describe the North Tower falling in real time. Pretty surreal.

I was working at KUPD at the time. I recall we all just didn't really know WHAT to do. We sent the vans out to blood donation centers to encourage listeners to donate, that was about all that made any sense I guess.

620 KTAR had David Leibowitz in midday (he had conquered Pat Mcmahon by then I believe). They did lots of ABC News programming on that day. Tony Femino was doing afternoons.

"Heidi (Foglesong) and Heywood (Bill)" were on at KFYI when the attacks hit. Barry Young had just returned to KFYI after about a 18 month absence, about a month before the attacks. KFYI went in to CBS news coverage after the attacks. Charles Goyette did afternoons 2-6p, Austin Hill did 6-7p evenings, Dr. Laura was on later in the evening. KFYI dropped Dr. Laura that night and for several weeks after 9-11 and Hill did a local evening show.

That's what I seem to recall about the local talk radio scene.

I always back then woke up to The Zone and they had the "new guys" on and as soon as I heard about it I ran to the tv.. ugh... reliving that day is hard. I remember thinking.. I honestly don't know what to do, where to go, who to call, etc. What a horrible feelign.. and another thing I remember is driving to work or on the way home I forget and hearing news/talk stations on every car around me, no music.. just the news..

I was listening to Heidi and Bill and turned the TV on when she said they'd heard news a plane hit The WTC. After the second plane hit, KFYI went to the network and I think they stayed there, except for occasional local station I.D. Don't think they aired C2C.

I was driving to work listening to Heidi & Heywood when they reported that the first plane hit. I work for the Air Force and my career is similar to air traffic control. We were talking about how could that happen and maybe it was a small plane. Once the second plane hit, everyone was shocked. We have a radar antenna on the North side of Luke Air Force Base. If you're driving on Northern you can see it on top of a small man-made mountain. It was eerie not seeing any airplanes flying on our radar scope.

I know one person who never received praise during that day: Howard Stern. He stayed on live throughout his shift reporting from New York. Callers and correspondences talked about everything real time. It was very interesting radio.

Yes I agree, since then I have heard that show from Stern and it was a very interesting show for sure. I believe he surprised alot of people at how well he covered the days news on what an awful day.
