Phone systems

I use those at a couple of my contract stations - they work great.

1 word of caution though - when you put it in the "broadcast" mode the handset will still "leak" audio onto the line. Not a problem if you are not yelling but I use mine in studios with jocks. A PTT button on the handset does the trick.

I'm looking to set up a small home studio (similar to one for podcasts) and wanted to have a setup to be able to record a rare phone call into Audition. Will something like this work?

I'd suggest avoiding that item - check with the broadcast sales companies and ask them how many they've taken back. If they say none - they're lying.

If you're looking to just record caller audio, you can do that with a cheap analog hybrid like this: http://broadcasttools.com/view_product.php?pid=113

What a load of poppycock BS! Methinks you are just biased against that particular product. You didn't state WHY you'd avoid it.

You can find Gentner AP 10 almost any time on ebay for $100.00 or less. Half rack space box with mix minus that was used with AP 400/800 for conference calling. The Ap 10 works fine by itself as it has POTS jack and recieve and transmit (input and output on back) with DIP switches in front for auto answer,AGC,etc.. Wonderful audio and if you use a more conventional mixer layout simply transmit on Aux 1 and recieve on
Aux 2.

Not that I need to justify to you, Robert - but I bought one and it was the worst telephone interface I've used in twenty years in radio. When I returned it the customer service person said "we get a lot of these returned".

I've found that the "leakage: is actually the earpiece that's acting as a microphone.

Very likely, I remember years ago when pay phones were prevalent that kids or vandals would steal the carbon transmitters and you could shout into the other end of the receiver in an emergency. Later on MaBell caught on and glued the caps onto the handsets.

While we're talking hybrids---can anyone suggest an inexpensive call director? We have a good hybrid but need to answer two POTS phone lines (seperately) and send them to the hybrid. We don't need to conference, just something to answer each line.

Go get a six or ten button key telephone. You can grab tip and ring of the selected line off the chaining switch. Loosen the screw which the switchhook contacts, and the buttons will no longer cancel whan the handset is put back on the switchhook. In fact, you can select lines without even picking up the handset by turning the hybrid on.
