Phone Tap bit, 2 stations in Miami do it

Anyone notice that on the "Big Lip Bandit Morning Show" on 99Jamz and "Elvis Duran and the Y Morning Zoo", they both have the phone tap bit on at the exact same times every morning.

Is corporate radio really gotten to the point that FCC threats have limited the amount of bits that morning shows can do?

You're reading too much into it.

I would think that they do this because listeners plan on it.... just like a chiropractor or fortuneteller might call in regularly on some other show.

What time?

The Z Morning Zoo, or I should say the Y Morning Zoo, does it at 7:20 and I believe 9:20.

I know a lot of people who tune in just to hear phone taps. I find a lot of them as funny as hell!

99 Jamz runs them also at 7:20 and 9:20. I don't know which morning show started them first, but 99 should drop it personally

Radio stations tend to air their most popular bits, give away their biggest prizes, and make their biggest announcements at 7:20 in the morning.

'Tune-in next Thursday morning at 7:20 as we give away $100,000 in cold hard cash right after Kid Kool makes a shocking announcement. Then stick around for our exclusive interview with Paris Hilton ! It's HOT !'

Wasn't it 7 AM when they announced Footy's retirement?

It was 7:20. Most stations do it at that time because it is usually the first commercial break of the hour, so they want to reel you in, do a tease, then give the info AFTER the commercials run. It's a cheap ploy, but it is pretty much an industry standard.

Actually if I recall correctly I think Footy actually announced it within the first 15 minutes of that Monday morning's show (sometime from 6 to 6:15 AM) of his final farewell week. I noticed that Stuart Elliott just posted on here (while I was typing this) that Footy announced his retirement at 7:20, so now I'm not so sure.

It's sort of eerie when I hear Footy on Y-100 now. They are still airing promotional spots for a few products that Footy was the spokesperson for. I also still hear Al Chio 'The Hit Man' occasionally doing the same thing.

Well, I didn't hear the announcement, but I thought it was publicized as 7 AM.

I agree! The Zoo does them much better. As far as who did them first..the Zoo has been doing them for 6 or 7 years. They just weren't on in Miami then.

I'm not ranting about what time the bit is being done, but even if you're a same market station, maybe make it a point of not running the same named bit at the exact same time.

TJ The DJ is the best at doing them. That's where his stand-up comedy / improvisational skills come in to play - reacting to the unfortunate victim at the other end of the line.

Elvis Duran keeps teasing Froggy about doing some Miami phone taps to air on the show. That would be cool to hear, but Froggy has such a distinctive voice. Maybe Hurley could handle the dirty deeds ? Kenny Walker was a pro at it when he did them for his own afternoon show and then on the 'Kenny & Footy' show. It was probably his strongest bit !

Oh geez... Kenny's phone scams were classic! I remember hearing him do one for the first time (not his first time, mine) and thinking "this is why I want into this industry!"

If only they were real....

TJ IS really good, although he is not really a stand-up or an improv comic. He's just a really talented kid
