Teddio:
There are 2 days left, today (Tuesday 2/28) and tomorrow (Wednesday 3/1), but here's where things stand after 18 of the 20 weekdays in the February sweeps. I won't list actual numbers, but will rank. CBS5 has 4:30 AM and 6:30 PM to itself, as KTVK does 8PM and FOX10 9PM, so those won't be included, and I've averaged out the Olympics from 12News' numbers, so you're looking at the averages of newscasts only:

5AM
1. FOX10
2. KTVK (0.3 behind FOX10)
3. CBS5 (0.5 behind KTVK)

Question - What is the appeal of the Fox 10 morning show? Ron and Rick don't really seem to know what they are talking about, then you got the airhead to add some fluff and then you have mr goofball on weather. Oh how can I forget airhead #2 for traffic. Just don't get why they are so highly watched. Now on the other hand I like Hook and Lake and they are a great team but mornings. hmmm jut baffles me

As always, thanks Michael!
I guess we should wait on the finals before comments, but a couple of things seem clear from the prelim numbers. KTVK's problems are starting to spread to mornings too. Ouch.
And, really, is there a worse performing ABC affiliate in the U.S. than our own ABC 15? Seriously. That station theoretically has a lot going for it -- major network with ABC having their best primetime in years for lead-ins and GMA strong in the mornings, great resources, all the hoopla this last year about their local nominations and "awards", blah, blah, blah. Given all this, where's KNXV really? Last at 5p, last at 6p, and barely beating out indy KTVK at 10p. It looks like 15 slipped in the mornings too. Of course, it's really worse than this since these numbers don't include Univision's which is probably cleaning everybody's plow. In most markets today, if you're an ABC affiliate, you could probably have chimps working the anchor desk and come in at least 3rd!(Actually, with that talent you might catapult to 1st.) Talk about complete ineptitude and underachievers. On the otherhand, in my opinion, 12News has made some mistakes but, know what? They are still on top of the heap; in spite of local talent shakeups and NBC's many failures.

In TV, there's a lot to be said so consistency and familiarity, and FOX 10 has that in the morning with Rick and Ron. Both have been doing mornings for more than a decade and both come off as warm and non-threatening, at least they did when I worked there. While I never worked much with Ron, I did once share a "penthouse office" with Rick. What makes him such an appealing on-air talent is the fact that what you see is what you get. He's no phoney, just a regular guy, and that comes across. In a business of high turnover, Channel 10 deserves credit for picking its talent wisely - that includes John Hook, too - and then sticking with that talent. Viewing patterns can take years to change. The station with the highest turnover can often be the station with the lowest ratings.

Yes, WLNE in Providence, RI is actually worse than our own ABC15, but of course Providence is a smaller market than Phoenix.

Rhode Island, eh? O.K., I'll have to take your word on that one, but it takes special talent and skill to be a net affiliate and come in 5th or 6th out of 6 consistently in a major market.

What d'ya say, let's give WLNE a shot at the big time. Think Providence would be interested in a trade? No? What if we throw the Cards into the deal?

KTVK (and Tara leaving?)

So moving Amanda Jahn to GMAZ did not help the numbers for this period? KPHO did not seem to gain anything by adding former 3-TV anchor Mike "Chambo" Chamberlain to their morning lineup.

Now can anyone confirm that Tara Hitchcock (Francis) is leaving KTVK? A post on the azfamily.com forums said they heard Tara mention something about going away and then heard Scott Pasmore say she was gone on the midday show.

Funny you should mention the Cardinals, because they and KNXV seem to have the same problem. I was wondering if the ratings reflect KNXV's current incompetence, or if they just reflect the public's perception of a station with a history of incompetence. Even if KNXV (and the Cards too) should suddenly change their ways, it would take a long time to overcome the inertia of public opinion.

The same holds true in the opposite sense with KPNX. They've been respected for so long that people overlook their current problems. I don't think their newscast is as good as it used to be, but it'll take an extended period of missteps before public opinion shifts.<P ID="signature">______________

You're absolutely right! It is hard for a perennial cellar dweller to move up in the ratings, even if they get the most experienced talent in the market (see KPHO). On the flip side, a newscast can slip in quality quite a bit before people tune away.

I thought the distinction of "worst-performing large market ABC affiliate" went to KDNL in St. Louis.

I thought we were talking about news ratings. Since KDNL appears to have no news, I guess that they would have the lowest rated local newscasts of any ABC station. If we are talking among ABC affliates with newscasts, I'm sure that WLNE must be in the bottom 10.

is there a worse performing ABC affiliate in
> the U.S. than our own ABC 15?

Not worse but pulling similar share #'s; KSTP Ch 5 Minneapolis/St Paul. Phoenix is ranked #14 and Mpls/St Paul is ranked 15 according to Nielson. KSTP has pulled 3rd place with a 19 share for probably 10 - 15 years. Granted KSTP battled CBS WCCO Ch 4 which is the 800 lb. gorilla and Paul Magers at NBC Ch 11 who was voted the "male anchor god" for the entire country and now is at CBS2 in Los Angeles. But Phoenix does not have this problem with anchor gods. Dana is good but not pretty.

The biggest problem for ABC15 was the god awful channel/network shuffle in 1994. Channel 12 stayed where it was, and pulls numbers because of that. In comparing KSTP's newscast and ABC15's I personally prefer ABC15. Johnathon Elias is becoming more mature from where he previously worked. And anyone who doesn't enjoy watching Katie Raml; we need to talk. The field reporters can be thin in story details preferring more to the dramatization, but they are no different from any other television station, terrestial or cable included. But are they the worst, by no means. Watch KSTP's newscast with a 55 year old women they rehired because they fired Harris Faulkner. It's at times painful. Believe me Phoenix, things could be worse.

Are you kidding?

I'm afraid I don't agree, evidently along with many thousands of other Valley residents. I've heard the excuse for 15's woes being the channel shuffle and I'm sure that was a problem for a few years. But, come on, that was 12 years ago! How long can they carry that crutch? I think you'll find that since they dumped Long and went with Elias and Raml they have done steadily worse. There is no connection to their viewers. Most folks I know consider them to be corny, lightweight, and small market. There is also a sleazy overtone to almost everything that station does. Just my opinion.

We'll see how they do, but if you believe ABC 15's problems mostly stem from 12 years ago and that causes people in droves now to reach for their remotes at 10p after an ABC blockbuster, you are sadly mistaken. For that matter, many if not most of their potential viewers weren't even living in the Valley 12 years ago! They have no clue about the channel/network shuffle and could care less. Sorry can't buy it. Think the advertisers are buying it?

Teddio --

You are right on the money here. I am an example of a viewer, who did not live in the Valley 2 years ago (let alone 12 years ago). ABC15 is tabloid trash and the set looks like it was designed and constructed by a high school journalism class. Part of the problem is the unique position of having 5 (count 'em five) major news stations in the Valley. In contrast, Seattle only has 4.

That being said, I enjoy watching ABC15 news on Sunday Mornings. It is an excellent newscast. They need to promote those anchors!
