Pick one, any one

Between 99.5 WYCD-FM(the Country station heading towards a 8.0 share), 97.1 The Ticket(home to all 4 local teams, and possibly the best rated Sports station in the country with a 7.1 share), and 104.3 WOMC(ratings have dipped since February, but still pretty good), which of these CBS Radio stations desperately needs a true competitor? Each of these stations are running away with their demographic, and it seems like when ratings get where 99.5 and 97.1 are, talk of a new station start. So, if we found out that July 15th, a format change was coming, which one of these stations would probably have a new competitor? I would love to add my opinion, but I want to hear yours first. All replies are welcome.

I've said before 93.1 should maybe go Country in order to knock WYCD down a couple pegs (moving the WDRQ calls to 96.3 in the process) :) If not a second country station, maybe WJR on 760 and now 93.1?

I love the idea of moving the WDRQ call letters to 96.3 if that happened. Not exactly sure why they chose WDVD, but it has worked, I suppose.

Didn't WDVD start out as more of a Modern AC format? (going back to the old Planet 96.3 format which was also an Alternative or Modern AC) When they went to Hot AC and then Adult CHR, the WDVD calls stuck with them :)

YES YES :)

I see Country with the biggest target on its back. There is a sports competitor, and WOMC's music while it cumes well, likely doesn't reach the desired demos.

However, like anything, execution is paramount. When CC brought Country back to 106.7, a heritage frequency for that format, WYCD barely budged.

CBS is just doing radio well in Motown right now.

The WDRQ calls would still be okay to use at 93.1 even if it was flipped to country music. The new station could be called 93-1 Q COUNTRY with the WDRQ calls.

umfan, you are right. CBS Radio is doing well right now ratings wise, and if a new Country station is on the horizon, it has to be executed properly. WYCD(99.5) has had a 12+ year advantage as the dominant Country station here, is marketed well, and simply put, they are the only country station. It is going to take a big effort to overtake them. Human Numan, I agree with you as well. 93.1 Q Country could definitely work as a station identifier.

If 93.1 were called Q Country, might not WSAQ in Port Huron, which is Q-Country 107, cry foul? WSAQ comes in pretty well in much of northern Macomb County, and isn't Port Huron considered part of the Detroit market?

I also wonder if Cumulus would execute the format well enough to give WYCD a real competitor. WYCD does well because it's local and promotes its localism heavily. Cumulus would likely thrown on something with a bunch of syndicated jocks including CMT Live with Cody Alan and After MidNite. Which might be fine if they want to use it as a flanker to take WYCD down some and make WDVD look more attractive in the adult demos, but I doubt it would ever actually win against WYCD.

Those with good memories might recall that 93.1 was a country station briefly as WDEE-FM around 1970, before the station was sold, split away from WDEE-AM (now WLQV) and became the news/talk-formatted original WDRQ.

And yes, when WPLT originally became WDVD in 2001, it was an alternative-leaning Hot AC format that wasn't a whole lot different from what Planet 96.3 had been but with most of the '80s alternative gold gone and some of the '80s slots taken up by Aerosmith, Poison and other hair bands.

Chris, That is an interesting point. throwing out Q Country was a way to keep the WDRQ call letters at 93.1 if moving them to 96.3 wasn't an option. you also make a good point with would Cumulus execute the station properly to make 99.5 sweat. Enough people think a second Country station is worth a shot, so I would like to see it to see if 99.5 really benefited from having such a long run with no real competition, or are they just programmed and marketed very well-which could be the case.

I strongly disagree with this. WDRQ's format (regardless of what frequency it's on) needs to be some kind of rhythmic/dance/pop/CHR format. NOT country. Wasn't DRQ a disco/dance station briefly in the early '80s? I wish 96.3 WDVD would re-brand itself as WDRQ - "Detroit's dance station". ;D
