Picked up CKPC 1380/Brantford ON nr Boston

They have a fairly strong signal at 25kw, I think the US has a lower power limit on this frequency. I get them booming in here in Upstate NY. They sound great and actually play music. I also believe they were in stereo at one point, and may still be. I dont have a stereo AM receiver so I can't tell.

Kingston ON's CKLC used to be on that frequency, before they flipped to FM, so we're probably hearing CKPC a little more often. And speaking of flips, Brantford's CKPC switched from oldies to country, about a 1/2 year ago.

And BTW, raccoon, we get lots of Beantown up here, in eastern Ontario. :D

probably does. We have stations in RI, VT, NH etc on 1380 and they aren't too powerful by day, and less so (plus pattern changes) at night. I have gotten WSYB Rutland toward dusk but this time of
yr just after dark, CKPC does boom in well. And great about Boston stations coming in well in Ont. at night (WBZ, etc.!)

Actually, the former "regional" (class III) stations on frequencies such as 1380 are no longer limited to 5 kW in either the US or Canada. The "Rio" treaty changed those stations to class B, allowing them to operate with powers up to 50 kW. But they can only increase power if they can do so without creating new interference to other co- and adjacent-channel stations, and most of the ex-class III stations in the northeast are wedged in so tightly that they can't boost power.

There are exceptions, though: WADO 1280 in New York bought out first-adjacent 1290 on Long Island and was able to boost its day power to 50 kW, all aimed east from New Jersey over NYC and out to sea. And of course we've seen significant power increases in Boston at ex-class III signals on 1330 and 1600.

I forgot about Kingston's AM stations. They signed off before I got serious about Dxing. I get most of the Kingston FM stations, and at one point they used to have 2 AM stations, CKWS at 960, and CKLC at 1380. CKWS lives on with its same oldies format on FM, and CKLC is also on FM but plays alternative rock now.
