"Pig Virus" asks for fake callers to McConnell's WGN show

This has made the famous Feder column. There may or may not have been fake callers on WLW (Martin and Sensible Don have called the WGN show), but this has hit the fan with a lot of "legacy" WGN listeners not being the least bit happy about McConnell, as well as other changes made to WGN since the former Cincinnati crew took over.

http://blogs.vocalo.org/feder/2010/09/wgn-listeners-leave-‘new-talent-hanging-out-to-dry’/36142

BTW, if McConnell really is doing his show full time from WQRT, how long before Feder finds out and reports that? What will be the reaction then?

Feder is an out-of-work whiner, writing in his bathrobe from his mother's basement. He gets press in Chicago because the team the old-line loves to hate is making headway and profits. Feder will always hate anything the new regime at Tribune does. As the demos go younger, he'll find fault with the station "abandoning its faithful" or some similar tripe. If the guy had any real talent, he'd have a real job. He's a sore loser with the emphasis on loser.

Anyone who was around at the time remembers a call or two from the station offices when WLW and WKRC were trying to young-up their audience. There's nothing wrong with appealing to the target by saying what they're thinking. Remember...it's entertainment.

I think McConnell burned any bridge back to WLW. No doubt WQRT would take him but realistically, how much can they afford to pay and would McConnell settle for that signal?
Eisner may well dump Michaels, but is he really going to bring back Kathy and Judy, and the 65-to-death WGN?

McConnell is actually in Cincinnati doing his show from WQRT and satelitte-feeding it to WGN? ???
This Pig Vomit guy should be out of radio. How many stations have canned this Pig Virus? Now it makes me wonder how many "real" callers are on ANY radio talk show.

Jeesh - calm down, everybody, it's only radio.

If you ethics experts didn't KNOW if the host originates from Cinn, Chicago, or Renssealer, what the heck difference does it make?

Radio has been doing this kind of stuff for YEARS. You were of course aware that the Billboard Hot Hundred (and MANY top 40 lists) depended on the payola received - and not the sales, right?

Orson Welles landed people from Mars in New Jersey, too. Heck, they had to announce that "programs were pre-recorded" because people thought the actors were LIVE.

Grow up and realize that the world runs on MONEY. Richie Daley has enough, so he's retiring. Big deal.

Payola is highly illegal, but i'm willing to bet it still goes on. Anyone remember the 1st season of "WKRP In Cincinnati", the episodes titled "Johnny Leaves" and "Johnny Comes Back", where new Morning Host Doug Winner is caught getting cocaine in lieu of playing OnSlaught Records' crappy music?
Unfortunately, attitudes like "Where does it matter where he's broadcasting from?" is what put radio in the gutter that it resides in today, where voicetracking continues to allow greedy radio operators to put talented folks out of jobs daily. Randy Michaels would be proud of you, Prais. Is that you, Pig Vomit? ;D

I didn't know you were on R-I, Randy. :)

Seriously, Feder is actually not "out of work". Chicago Public Radio actually pays him (I don't know how much) to do the Vocalo blog. He does play up the "these horrible people are ruining this crown jewel" card a BIT much, but he's being paid to do so.

But...

The potential regime change at Tribune could prove to be very interesting.

If Eisner is indeed in, Randy and company are out, and possibly some MAJOR changes are in the works at WGN.

There is a fact that has nothing to do with Randy Michaels - WGN skewed older and needs to change. It may not be the way it's been done there up until now. Despite the handwringing by Mr. Feder et al, McConnell is actually a decent fit for an attempt to skew WGN younger...with or without Randy and his management team...so he could well stay.

The legendary Milton Metz from WHAS radio, when he was a radio host in the 1960s and 70s, on those nights when the calls wouldn't come, would have his producer call his wife at home to call in, expressing a unique opinion that would stir the listeners into calling his show.

So what's new??

McConnell should not be guilty just by associating with PV. How could any rational person fault a guy for trying to improve himself by accepting an opportunity of moving to the 3rd largest market? Haven't you worked for a boss who was a jerk?

Yes. In Chicago radio in the 70's, I worked for the biggest putz as a person/boss- screaming and swearing over little crap, BUT who gave me alot of compliments, and taught me alot, because of his 40+ years in radio.

He insulted my ethnicity. and I told my dad. Dad said, 'YOU wanted the radio job, so now weigh if he can help you" - I stayed and, despite his continuing beig an ass, he was fascinating to listen to, and was a powerful reference because of hi friends.
