"Pig Virus" fills in for Jerry

I almost missed this! The substitute host on Jerry Springer's program Friday was Kevin Metheny. Kevin Metheny is currently program director for Clear Channel's Cleveland cluster (and the guy who put Jerry Springer on 50kw blow torch WTAM as lead in to Rush Limbaugh).

But Kevin Metheny is most infamous as "Pig Virus," program director of WNBC radio in the early and mid 80's when Howard Stern did afternoon drive (Imus did morning drive and Soupy Sales did middays in an early comedy-talk format). He is depicted in the film version of "Private Parts" (most likely for legal reasons) as "Kenny" and Howard refers to "Kenny" on the air as "Pig Vomit." The General Manager at WNBC when Howard was there was Randy Michaels, until recently CEO of Clear Channel Radio (and once again Metheny's boss). Michaels started his own company, P1, this year and now syndicates The Ed Schultz Show. Much of Howard's book and movie deal with Metheny's and Michael's attempts to rein in Howard and Howard's frustration with those attempts.

I hope somebody called while Pig Virus was doing the show and said "Baba Booey."

Wow, I missed this!

But, sure enough, here it is:

http://www.springerontheradio.com/

-----------

"Kevin Metheny, a seasoned radio professional and executive from many quarters of the industry, will fill in for Jerry Springer who is having (item deleted by OA in good taste) today in a routine colonoscopy.

He'll talk about breaking news in the Valerie Plame scandal in which Karl Rove will not be indicted for the moment and Scooter Libby may.

Then he'll ask you what is good or not about this new liberal talk radio movement.

And, yes, I will report live during the show from Jerry's colonoscopy.

I'm sorry, I had to edit that...I couldn't copy that phrase over in good conscience. ;)

Yeah, I heard parts of this the other day, particularly the beginning of the show. Seems Metheney has a pretty good sense of humor about his feud with Stern, and how he was ripped to shreds in the book and movie.

Funny, I almost expected him to sound like Paul Giamatti.
______________

Re: "Pig Virus" fills in Jerry

Wow. Anyone know how long it had been since Metheny had last been on the air?

I want to say 1973--at KJR in Seattle. May have been to '75 or so. He was at WNBC by the late 70s.

You know his father is a famed programmer as well--Terrell Metheny, of such locales as Louisville (WKLO), New York (WMCA 1968), and Milwaukee.

Yeah, he was rusty. ;-) I wish I'd known in advance. I would have listened.
______________
