If memory serves, Pike spent a short time in the NEPA market. When Neilsen looked at diaries, and a majority of the people were watching NYC stations, Pike went to the NYC DMA.

Bradford could go next, to Elmira or Binghamton. Monroe is constantly on the line, with all the transplants still loyal to NYC.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton market lost Pike County, I believe, back in 2001. When I got to that market, it was #52...then it dropped to #53 when it lost Pike County to the New York market.

I'm surprised that Bradford County isn't already part of the Elmira market. More people in that area watch the Elmira stations then the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton stations. I can't see Bradford County becoming part of the Binghamton market, considering Elmira is right across the border from PA...and Binghamton is some 50 miles or so to the east of Elmira.

Interesting. My next question is, if Pike is a part of the NY market now, do the New York stations cover any Pike County news, or mention it in their weather? I find it hard to believe Channels 2, 4, and 7 are mentioning Milford or Dingman's Ferry (or whatever that town is called) in their news and weather, but I guess they are ... (at least in the weather maybe).

I haven't heard any of the TV meteorologists mention Pike County specifically but they do have it outlined on their local maps/radars. I suppose that's enough to welcome Pike to the party...

Having worked in the Pocono's for 15 years I must say that I am surprised how often I have seen NYC TV trucks in Eastern Monroe and Pike counties. I have seen trucks app 2xs per year. When I lived there I even saw the occasional story (usually part of a bigger story such as the house building/falsified values scandal. I know 2xs isn't much, but their is not a lot going on their either.

On Radio I often heard people call in from all over the Pike/Monroe Counties. WABC AM even ran a commercial that said they were number one in PIKES County PA. Does pronouncing the name wrong still allow one to claim their 15 minutes of fame?

That is not true, several TV stations(i.e. WNEP, WYOU, WBRE) and radio stations
(WILK. WICK) still reports news from Pike County, whether it was a car accident or a criminal investigation. WNEP did a report about the Tom Ridge Pavilion somewhere in Lehman Twp. in that county.

Also, Pike County is part of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre EAS operational area.

Well, oftentimes, marginal counties like Pike get coverage from two markets ... their proper market, and also another market which still has a lot of viewers in that county. From what I hear, Pike was for years part of Scranton, but then became part of NY when Neilson saw more NY viewers in Pike than Scranton viewers. But because there's still a decent Scranton loyalty (although not more than half), you'll hear Scranton mention Pike, too.

Lehigh and Northampton counties are like this, too. Those counties are part of Philly, but you'll often see Scranton mentioning them in their news and weathercasts.

When I first heard that Pike had become part of NY, I was shocked, but now it makes perfect sense. Everytime I've been through Pike, there is an incredible NY following there. Everyone watches 4, 5, and 7 for news and most of the newspapers you see are from NY.

I guess Milford is becoming a bedroom community for NY, as far away as that is. Intersting.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Radio Market?

Getting this back to the proper form of media, which cities and/or counties in Pennsylvania officially make up the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre radio market? I doubt that any of New Jersey is included in it. However, I usually pick up WKRF-FM 107.9 of Stroudsburg (satellite of WKRZ-FM 98.5 Wilkes-Barre) about 10 miles from the Delaware River along I-80 heading west.

Actually Pike County is on the "radar screen" for the WB/Scranton market stations. There is concerted effort to attempt to bring Pike County back into the WB/Scranton TV market. Based on HDTV "full power" contours the new DTV contours on some of the Scranton stations fully encompass Pike County while the nearly all of the NYC stations fall short at the PA/NJ border. The WB/SCR stations also realize that Pike is the fastest growing county in PA now larger than Wayne. The retail market in Pike is now developing quickly.
In a related matter the Satellite Home Viewers Extension and Reauthorization Act of 2004 "SHVERA" goes into effect on December 8, 2005. It will give all Directv and Dish Network subs in Pike County access to at a minimum WBRE, WYOU and WNEP in addition the current NYC market stations they were only able to get by law. This law was written in response to many counties similar to Pike which were near located between two markets and were shut out from Local Station access on DBS and could only retransmit the stations within the DMA, SHVERA uses the official list of significantly viewed stations on the FCC database.

BTW the top story tonight 9/12 on the WNEP newscast was a story about a horse barn fire in Milford, Pike County. You won't hear a peep about that on a NYC station.

WNEP covers Lehigh and Northhampton counties also. Especially in weather(the southern tier) They also have a low wattage translator in allentown(channel 7) Ironically though, these two counties are in the Philadelphia TV market.
