Piolin Out - How Does This Affect Univision

A brutal blow today to Univision as they lose Piolin... not sure if he is self syndicated, headed to Entravision or SBS or some combination. This changes the dynamic in Phoenix who Univision uses him to generate half the market's revenue.

Other properties are not performing.

Interesting update - do you think this would impact Univisions broadcasts from Disneyland on New Year's Eve?

I think they've got bigger problems than Disneyland. Markets like Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Diego, and San Francisco will be hard pressed to survive revenue wise without him. It depends if they can develop another show. KHOT drops off dramatically when he leaves the air and Recuerdo and La Kalle are throw-ins essentially. It's just an odd move because Univision has been so successful with this model.

Wow, sounds like is scramble mode. I can't think of many companies in any industry than can lose that significant amount of it's revenue and survive.

Duh, just bring in Don Francisco!

You are aware he isn't a radio DJ, right? Or Mexican. Sure, you can have a Honduran to do a show for a regional Mexican station (despite anything a certain radio consultant may say about a certain Los Angeles radio host) but yeah, Chile is a long way from Mexico... you need to be basically be steeped in the culture to be a DJ for that genre, because Mexicans are by far the largest demographic.

Another thread said Piolin was half of Univision's billing in Phoenix. If that's true, I agree it's hard to see how that cluster survives without him.

I know he isn't a DJ...but, I do know that he is from Chile, not Honduras.

Learn to appreciate sarcasm, it becomes funny that way.

If they can't get Don Francisco, then how about Mario Kreutzberger? ;) ;)

That "Honduran" tried every means to pretend he was Mexican, right down to billboards and bus cards saying "El Cucuy es Raza" but it did not work. He got ratings for a while in LA, but every attempt at syndication failed with very low ratings.

I think Mario is even older than don Francisco. ::) ;D

I was in Food City and there was a sign with his face on it, but I forget what he was promoting. (When John and Ken stopped talking about him his ratings dropped in LA)

He'll probably finish July top 5... I'm sure a lot of people would like to have those numbers.

I really doubt that anyone who listened to John & Ken also listened to him.

I found a good (Spanish) article on the whole ordeal. Some selected translated quotes for our resident gringo doctors and nurses...

"For years, [Eduardo] Sotelo was the king of Spanish radio in [the United States]. And it was all deserved."

"According to a long report in the Los Angeles Times, Sotelo's long reign over Spanish morning radio was interrupted by a scandal of sexual harassment and other offenses different in their nuances but similar in their gravity."

"What is true is that Piolín had been losing his audience. He had gone from being the indisputable leader of Spanish morning radio to sixth place—and further down, according to some sources."

The article also discusses how declining immigration and the rise in American-born and raised Hispanics means that Sotelo's experience is less identifiable to the community and that English-language media is becoming more important; a Pew survey says that just 2% of American-born Hispanics only rely on Spanish-language media to stay informed.

The author also offered one final statement:

"Demographics don't lie. Serving the new audience that has surged forth, one whose consumption habits are still not yet defined, will be the great challenge for American radio and television aimed at Hispanics."

Gracias por su obra de arte, Señor o Señora o Señorita, desde los Buckeye Boyz.

The Spanish language print media had a bunch of John and Ken stuff last year. I think they have been reigned in a bit, J + K, that is.

And "in the day" Black newspapers had articles about the KKK. That did not mean any of the readers of those papers were going to become klukkers... it was simply an item of interest, as repugnant as it might have been when I would read articles like that in the Call & Post.

Reporting in Spanish language media about an English language radio duo with a large following and opinions sometimes at odds with the perceived interest of the readers of those papers does not mean anyone will actually listen... even more so due to the language barrier issues.

I haven't been in SOCAL lately, is J & K still on the air? They used to talk about Piolin quite a bit, maybe KFI will ad Piolin to their line-up?
