Piolin Out

Univision cancels Piolin... tongues wagging... SBS, Entravision, or self syndicated... many of these markets are driven by his show.

SBS has Mandril, who is doing very well in their O&O markets.

He's already self-syndicated in the non-UVN markets.

David - non-UVN affiliates were told the show is gone... if the show was self-syndicated, I would assume it would've continued for those affiliates.

I don't know who has the markets to make this work.

Just seems like bad news for Univision in some of these markets...

Wonder who they will replace him with. Probably Raúl Brindis, who is syndicated Saturdays and is a big deal in Texas.

But the show has no infrastructure of its own to deliver the product. Perhaps the other stations can find a different facility, up-link and studio for him /them.

El Vacilon del Mandril is a veritable "comepajarracos." El Mandril has learned that doing LIVE radio, and not overly-rehearsed and pre-recorded bits is a ratings grabber. His team includes Gerardo Lopez, who used to be one of the big wigs with the Tweety Bird, until he saw things were on the decline.

This is a big victory for El Mandril, having eclipsed Rush Limbaugh, as the number one radio host in the country:

What should prove to be interesting (but likely not threatening to prime demos) will be the entrance of El Cucuy on the national scene, being that he has just signed with GLR Networks. ;D

David, why did this happen? I'm assuming contract negotiations went sour between Piolin and Univision? I wouldn't think that Univision would pull the plug so quickly on Piolin after being beat out by KLAX in the mornings, Univision had just rolled out a bus ad campaign for his show.

That's not true. Gerardo was local PD at KLNV in San Diego for several years before he moved on...

That's not true, either. The article was very badly written (and translated even more inaccurately), and should have specified that it was about the LA metro, only. Rush Limbaugh, on about 600 stations, has many, many times the audience of that SBS show.

That show, in various prior syndication attempts, gained no traction outside of LA.

Now, he is on a Tijuana / San Diego AM station in a market where he totally struck out on a full power AM.

David, why did this happen?

The AP report, in part, says:

"Univision Radio Network's nationally syndicated Spanish-language program "Piolin por la Manana" has been canceled, a network official said Tuesday.

Univision spokeswoman Monica Talan confirmed in an email to The Associated Press that the morning talk show hosted by Eddie "Piolin" Sotelo was dropped, but she declined to provide a reason."

As reported by Reed Johnson and Meg James in the July 23 Los Angeles Times, "No reason has been given for the dropping of the show." We can always trust the Times to give us the facts! :-\

So why did it happen? Duh. Ratings. The Baboon ate the Tweety Bird.

For several years the LA Spanish language morning race has been, on average, a three and even four way statistical tie.

One summer book (in case you don't know, the June July and August period holds much less weight than other books, just as December and Holiday are seldom considered) does not make or break a show. That's why ad agencies don't buy off a single book... they use multi-book rolling averages.

And in other markets, the story is different... like Chicago where the Canary swallowed the Baboon... with double the share.

LA Opinion says he made $6,000,000 a year and was fired for low ratings and being difficult to work with. He was escorted out of the KSCA studios in Glendale by security.

Isn't that the same rag that with total inaccuracy printed that "El Mandril" on KLAX was the #1 morning show in the whole country?

Allaccess says rumours indicate that he may well self syndicate... Univision just fired the first shot.

http://www.allaccess.com/net-news/archive/story/120613/piolin-to-start-his-own-network

Those rumors run the gamut from internal personnel issues to PIOLIN building out his own facility with plans for self-syndication -- and UNIVISION found out and pulled the trigger.

The later scenario has the most credibility and the word into ALL ACCESS is that those facilities are in the works and could be operational in 10 days or less.

If it is true, how long would he have to wait before re-entering his previous markets, because of non-competes?
