Piolin

How does he do in all his markets and who if anyone is beating him. I know he is successfull but I don't think he is invincible, just wondered what would be the best way to beat the guy. What are the choices for AM Spanish AM shows?

Piolin is #1 total market or, at least, #1 Hispanic market at all his affiliated stations in Mexican-dominant markets. Even in NY, after 4 months, he beat WSKQ in 18-34 on a suburban signal!

Morning options in syndication are Piolin, Raúl Brindis, El Pistolero all from Univision / United Stations, and Renan (El Cucuy) from ABC. Bustos media has music formats, but not a personality morning show.

Does a Raul Brindis or a Cucuy hold up against Piolin and does Piolin compete against El Chulo in Austin? I know Piolin talks alot but does a station that is local with local content, how do they do against him. I know he has some god awfull long commercial breaks.....you thoughts DE.

Piolin beat Chulo in his first month, March, in Austin.

I personally don't listen to Piolin, but if he's number one, then I must take a listen one of these days! How does Piolin stand against Raul Brindis and his imaginary friend (pepito) in Houston? I must be neck to necki! How about San Antonio, I hear he has also entered that market recently (along with the Valley)?

Also hear that Raul Brindis can now be heard in La Mejor of Monterrey, Mexico, Congrats to him!

I am still wondering what would the strategy to beat him be. I have heard his show, know he works very hard and when he has made appearances he works his ass off. I was impressed by the comments from former coworkers.......But like everything nothing is invincible, just wondering how would someone attack him.

Unless he is on a bad signal (Atlanta, for example) or there is an Arbitron aberration of monumental proportions (the 18-34 and 35-64 sample disaster in April in Dallas, for example) he can not be beaten today.

The Dallas situation had more to do with the type of promotion. KSCS used the similar type of promotion and won in the late '90s. You have to admit that. It was more to do with promotion than the talent itself......That being said I believe there is a way to beat him, just wondering what it might be.....

The only way to beat great taslent is to get someone better, a thing that does not exist in this situation. People like El Culo, Renán, E>rasno & Chocolata, and many local talents have tried, but for the moment, the Piolín show is it.

As to Dallas, there may be some promotion issues, but the fact is that there is a huge sample issue in 18-34 Hispanics in Phase I (Look at KZZA) and there is a problem of even greater proportion in 35-64 Hispanics. As we know, Arbitron constantly balances the sample, and there should be good proportionality and weighting by phase III.

Well, listened to Piolin, and have to say, I also find it hard to believe what happened in the Dallas ratings. Something has to be wrong over there as Piolin is very hot on the Immigration topic. I've listened to La Preciosa and Recuerdo and let me tell you, I cannot listen to both of those stations for more than 2 minutes as they are too boring, but that is just me. Alex cannot be capable of beating Piolin, especially right now during the rally that Piolin is trying to do with the immigration process. But then, anything is possible. We'll just have to see what happens in next months release.

While we are in the same Recuerdo-La Preciosa topic, how is it that they both perform so well in the 12+ sections. I know a lot of people who are from the ages of 17 - 25 and they cannot bare to listen to the old boring music. Can someone explain that? Even I am Hispanic and cannot understand why this happens? All of my old high school friends (many which moved here from Mexico) DO NOT listen to Recuerdo here in Houston, so it confuses a lot.

Speaking for Recuerdo (and Preciosa is just a johnny-come-lately copy of the original Recuerdo format pioneered in 2000 at KRCD), the format is designed for, pretty much, 30-49 and not 18-34 such as a regional Mexican station would target. In fact, the two formats are separate and complementary, not the same.

Simply stated, the format is "Mexican Hits" of the last 4 to 5 decades... it's not supposed to appeal to 17-24 year olds at all. Music that has strong memories to adults over 30 is not going to be liked by today's late teens and young adults... and that is the purpose of such formats... to appeal to a dfferent group.

I have heard that locally owned KSTN-107.3 went up in the ratings and beat rival Entravision owned KMIX-100.9 and in a twist, Entravision acquired the rights to Piolin for several markets including Stockton/Modesto, and that caused KMIX to beat KSTN. I don't know if KSTN replaced Piolin with another syndicated Spanish Morning Show (like El Cuchuy) or if it is now local again?

Hello Mr. RadioMan! Piolin without a Doubt is NUMBER 1 in his time slot. Univision Stations that broadcast his Show have built their imaging, promotional scheme, and programming around PIOLIN...? The only way to beat PIOLIN is with M-U-S-I-C, LESS TALK, AND GREAT PROMOTIONS i.e. DALLAS! While the yellow Birdie is yapping away you play the HITS, its simple PEOPLE listen to radio to hear MUSIC! Houston, Dallas, Chicago, and Albuquerque the stations Piolin broadcast on are 2nd or even a distant 3rd overall as far as ratings are concerned, why? Becuase those cities have in Place a LOCAL morning show whith local Jocks LOCAL promotions which in turn Makes all the diffrence. Chicago has El Pistolero, Houston has Raul Brindis, allthough Dallas might be the exception but I tell you that music, promotions and Programming Ideas for La Preciosa network come out of Dallas, and in Albuquerque the have KLVO Radio Lobo a radio station that has been in town for over 15 years. Consistancy is the key, "Keep keepin on". Piolin is BEATABLE and I think the person that will do more damge to his show than anyone else is HIMSELF...as he is doing with this whole "IMMAGRATION RE-form" - PROMOTION. I call it a promotion because Piolin is trying to rally NUMBERS not a REFORM...and as far as that goes IT LOOKS LIKE IT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN ACCORDING TO THE U.S. CONGRESS WHO HAVE TABLED THE SUBJECT NOT ONCE BUT TWICE EVEN WITH THE VISIT OF PRES. BUSH! Piolin jumped from On-Air Personality to Politician..A BIG NO NO IN RADIO! "bad Piolin, Bad Piolin" so what NOW??? Piolin and UNIVISION let the MEXICAN Immgrant communtiy down (P-1 listeners) because UP TO THIS POINT THERE IS NO IMMGRATION REFORM...As I see it, the EMPIRE will soon self destruct, why? People no Longer look at Piolin as a Personality the look at him as a Politicion someone that can MAKE a change...If the immgration reform DOES NOT PASS all crediablity will be lost for PIOLIN AND UNVISION!!!

How strange, but the top 3 stations in mornings in Dallas play 5 songs or less an hour.

Houston, Dallas, Chicago, and Albuquerque the stations Piolin broadcast on are 2nd or even a distant 3rd overall as far as ratings are concerned, why?

Funny. In two of those markets, Piolin has been on the air in just four measured survey "months" and is brand new: ABQ, Chicago. In ABQ, one of the most wobbly markets in the US, he has been #1 in 3 of the 4 months. In Chicago, he is already #2 on a more limited signal. In Houston, he is on a signal that covers less than a third of the market, and wins in the area where there is a signal. In Dallas, he has been #1 in every one of the last 15 months except one... and in that month, Arbitron had a 23% undersample of Hispanics.

Becuase those cities have in Place a LOCAL morning show whith local Jocks LOCAL promotions which in turn Makes all the diffrence. I just looked at Drudge, and the immigration reform bill is definitely still alive, and the pressure is on to negotiate a compromise and pass it.

I think Piolin is the number two show in Spanish radio in houston, well actually he is number 2 in spanish here in houston, and the reason as he told me is the signal he has here in Que Buena 93.3 fm
